Chapter 2

After I'd gotten my lunch and stepped out of the line, two hours later, I searched through the busy lunchroom, looking for this boy I barely knew. Finally, I saw him, sitting alone  at one of the round tables. He was staring down at something — a phone, I think.

"Vincent?" I addressed him. His head flew up as I sat down across from him.

"Hey," he said. His phone buzzed once and he put it in his jacket pocket. 

"Do you need to get that?" I asked. He shook his head.

"Nah," he said. "It's just a friend who won't stop bothering me."

I raised an eyebrow but nodded. "Okay, then. So," I sat down on the bench. "What did you want to talk about?"

"Right, that," Vincent folded his hands together on top of the table, leaning forward. "You seem..." he paused for a moment. "Shaken up," he finished. "Did something happen?"

"How'd you know?" I asked incredulously. 

"Instinct," he answered simply. 

"Okay..." I dragged out. "Well, something happened, but—"

"Tell me," he cut me off.

"Why are you so interested?" I folded my arms across my chest.

"Because I am."

I narrowed my eyes, then noticed something on his hand. A vein, popping out like a red dress at a black and white ball. He was breathing heavily, and the scar on his cheek—which I only noticed just now—was strained.

"I need you to tell me what happened last night, Anastasia," he breathed. 

"How did you..." I trailed off. He shot up from the table.

He swore under his breath. "I can't..." And he was out of the lunchroom in seconds.

I got up and followed him out. He had gone the way that lead outside, but when I got out there, all I saw was a black wolf. But as I stared closer as it looked back at me, frozen, I saw how huge the wolf was. It had to be bigger than my mom's boyfriend, Jay, and definitely taller than me. I stalked toward it, making sure to be careful not to scare it off. It just stood there as I walked to it. It looked back at me longingly, not moving anything but the tightening and releasing muscles in its shoulders. I reached out and touched its muzzle. Its deep yellow eyes closed and leaned into my touch momentarily, before opening them again and moving away.

The midnight-colored wolf started to walk away. Stupidly, I began to go after it.

I followed the wolf through the woods next to the school. I marvelled at the way it ran—lightly and familiarly—against my own tread, which lead me to trip over my own feet often.

Suddenly, a shot rang out all around me, and the wolf veered to the side, skidding awkwardly before completely falling and lying on the ground. I ran to it, then stopped. Something was happening to it. The wolf was shuddering, shaking, and shivering. It howled once, its cry going from beastly to something more...human. I watched as the wolf's fur dissipated, revealing light skin. The black fur on the wolf's head turned into a head of medium lengthed hair. It groaned, as a boy's body appeared from the heap. It was...?

"Vincent?" I asked in awe. He just groaned again. There was a bullet wound in his arm. I thought about taking him back to the school, but he was butt naked, and I wasn't going to do that to him. I pulled out my cellphone and dialed my best friend, Violet.

"Ana?" She asked after answering the phone. "Ana, I'm in math," she hissed into the phone.

"I know, but," I paused. "I have Vincent Teller here. He's hurt, but I can't take him into school without causing a scene." I was still shaken up about the 'change,' but I had to be nonchalant.

"Okay, I'm coming. Hang on," Violet whispered into the phone. I heard her put her phone into her bag, get up, ask to go to the nurse, walk out, and take the phone out of her bag.

"Where are you guys?" She asked.

"In the woods outside of the cafeteria." There was silence for a moment as Vincent panted heavily. 

"Okay. I'll be there soon," then the line cut off.
