Twenty-Third

"I know you can hear me. I know you're about to fall asleep, I know that I didn't try and contact you all day. I won't come over even though the window is finally open, I won't try and see you...but I want you to listen to me. I want you to understand where I'm coming from and I want you to know that this isn't something I take lightly. This, our relationship, or our almost-relationship, our lives, our feelings. I don't want to take any of it lightly, I don't want you to think that I do. Let me start from the beginning, and try not to fall asleep.

"I've met so many girls on my tours. Girls I don't even know, girls I don't like, girls who throw themselves at me and try to do everything in their power to get me to like them. When I was younger, I loved it--I thought that it was the coolest thing in the world to have these girls think that I was the one for them. To have girls think that I was dateable, that I was loveable, that I could make a good boyfriend.

"I've only ever had one girlfriend. She treated me the same way that you did at first; as if she didn't have any use for me, any interest in me, any respect for me. And it drew me in. A strong girl, a girl who knew that she was worth more than I was, a girl who knew that her love and her affection would come at a price. A price that I would have to be willing to pay, or I would have to be willing to get out of her life.

"You don't throw yourself at me. You don't want me, you don't need me. You never made yourself seem lower than you truly are to get my attention. You're strong. You're independent. You're wonderful. You're gorgeous, you're stunning, you're intelligent, you're funny, you're...you. These things all make you the person who I've come to know and want to get to know better, the person who I want to make my own. I want to be able to grow with you, to learn with and from you, and to become a better person because of you. There's nothing else I wanted more in the world. I want you. I have since the moment I laid eyes on you in your driveway, what seems like ages ago.

"But you left, two weeks ago today. I understand, I do--you didn't need me. You don't need me. You never did, so it was inevitable that you would stop seeing me. You don't need a man in your life, because you have yourself and your strength from within you. That was never going to come from a man, that strength--you had it yourself. All along, you had the strength to do anything you wanted. You had the power to be your own person. And you were willing to share that with me. Holy crap was I grateful. I am grateful.

"But here comes the part you knew I had to get to eventually--why did it end?

"Why did you leave me? Yes, it's been done before, long ago by someone else, but this time was different. There was no warning, nothing to warn me. No signs that I was looking out for. We had planned a date. A date where we were going to discuss us, make us a real thing. We were going to have it made, Olivia. We were going to have everything we ever wanted. We could have become something, anything, the greatest power couple to ever grace the Earth. We could have been it. We had it all planned out.

"But now we don't. And that's alright, I understand. But I want to know why. Why did you leave? Why did you leave me, just when I was beginning to open up again? It hurts, I have to admit it. It hurts. It feels like someone took my heart and ripped it out, like someone was able to get rid of every happy emotion I was capable of feeling and stomp it out of my system. This wasn't a breakup, it wasn't something that I can mark the date of and say, 'This is when we broke up'. It happened at once, but it wasn't official. It still isn't.

"So you don't have to tell me why. I won't be angry. I was never angry, not when your mother told me you were sick, not when you ignored every call and text I made. I wasn't angry, and I'm still not. I'm just confused. I'm sad. I'm hurt. I thought we had a good thing going. I thought we were going to make it work, that this could be it for me. That we could be it. That we could be the couple to end all other couples. That we could be everything to each other. Because hell, you were already everything to me.

"I'll do anything to make you happy, Olivia. Even if that includes staying away from you. I'll do anything to make you smile, to make you enjoy your life. Even if that means never seeing you again. It'll destroy me, it really will. I know it will. But it just doesn't matter. You're what's important. You're what matters. You're the best thing in my life, and I could only have hoped I came close to being the best thing in yours. It's alright that I wasn't, that I'm not. If it'll make you happy, I'll stop talking. I'll stop calling, I'll stop texting, I'll stop...trying. But I needed you to know that I cared. That I really, really, care. You're beautiful, and talented, and wonderful...that you were everything I wanted in a friend, in a girlfriend, in a true love, in a wife. You're everything to me.

"So why did you have to leave?"

My pillow was wet with my tears as I laid in bed, wide awake, listening to the silence after Lincoln Carter spoke those last words. I could hardly muster out a whisper, a whisper that I knew he wouldn't hear, a whisper that was intended only for me.

"Because I loved you."

A/N: Nope, I'm not crying. Not crying. Alright, crying just a little bit.

Thoughts on the chapter? Thoughts on what Olivia is doing, or should do? Thoughts on Lincoln's monologue?

Also, I'm super impatient and excited for you guys to see Three's Company, so I've decided to up the release of the first chapter to February 1st instead of February 14th! I hope you guys will enjoy it and actually read it!
