Chapter 43

Jo and Kristen stand awkwardly in front of me, while Rainbow throws herself onto Tom. Kristen watches in awe, wishing she was as bold as Rainbow, yearning for the courage she thinks Rainbow contains; she watches her every move like the strange antagonists that appear in the old fashioned scary movies that are banned from Abnegation.

I remember smuggling The Shining in the school's basement with a television, watching the movie over and over again. It brings me satisfaction to think that the city once had basic entertainment. Today, in the city, right-brained people are heavily frowned upon, more than left-brained people. The left-brained belong in Erudite, but the right-brained are forever persecuted against their will, forced to disguise themselves to what they are not, and I never questioned it until now.

Jo eats a cupcake, her massive tattoos that cover her body showing, while wearing a crop top with some painfully short shorts.

"How can your shorts be so short?" I ask, breaking the perfectly painted picture that once lay in front of me.

"What kind of question is that?" Kristen asks, breaking her gaze from Rainbow snogging Tom.

"Don't negate points that aren't yours," I say sharply.

"You're like and Erudite. What's going on?" Kristen asks.

"I'm from there. Old habits, I guess!" I lie, falsely laughing.

Kristen and Jo laugh authentically, making me smile. Seeing others happy somehow brings me satisfaction.

I'm not sure why. My life has changed; what was once covered by confidence and feistiness is now overshadowed by indecisiveness and insecurities. Marcus has killed me; every attempt to recover always fails, robbing me of my sudden confidence like the assassins that Marcus resembles. I thought my childhood was normal. I thought it was the fundamental principles of life: getting beaten as punishment. At the age of twelve, I learned of physical and verbal abuse. Tobias told me.

Jo shakes me.

"Kat? You alive?" Jo asks jokingly.

"Nope, I'm as dead as a doornail," I reply jokingly.

"How are you talking to us?" Kristen asks.

"I'm a ghost, sending the message from the gods above," I reply, extending my arms and jumping up in the air.

Jo and Kristen start dying from laughter. I hear a moan from behind me. I turn around, curious to where on Earth that came from. It's Rainbow snogging Tom. Of course. They've been snogging for over 10 minutes.

"They're snogging, I assume?" Jo asks.

"Of course they are. For over 15 minutes!" I exclaim with exasperation.

"I'm sure Rainbow's going to die. Her body's going to turn blue and she's going to drop to the floor!" Jo says with excitement.

I start laughing genuinely. "Most likely."

Kristen says, "I agree," while looking at us with approval.

What is wrong with us? We are the weirdest group of friends to ever exist. We laugh heavily in unison until it causes us to cry from laughing so hard. My body loses balance from laughing so hard, causing my legs to become wobbly and my feet to trip over myself at least a hundred times. Then, suddenly, after thirty minutes more of laughing, my body plummets to the ground. The humor of before is overshadowed by the pain that just affected my ribs, face, arms, and legs. The laughing stops.

"Ouch," I mutter without thinking.

This makes me sound weak. I sound weak. I shouldn't sound weak and weary; it might be a dead giveaway to the discovery of my divergence.

"You alright?" Kristen asks.

I nod, hopping back on my feet. Rainbow falls from Tom's arms, her face hitting the concrete floor.

Jo starts laughing. "I'm a psychic," she says, waving her fingers around her head as a false indicator of some paranormal experience.

We start laughing again.
