Chapter 40
A/N- So sorry I haven't updated in forever! I'm currently studying my butt off for midterms and the ISEE test and this is my stress reliever!
......
The train ride was long, but peaceful. I stay snuggled in Nathan's shoulder.
"Where's your family?" I ask him.
"Like I've ever heard about yours," he retorts.
"I'm going to tell you," I say.
"That would be lovely, but please. If you don't want to, don't tell me," Nathan says.
I look at him. I can only tell him if I look away. I play with my ponytail. "Okay. Ummm.... Well, Kat isn't my real name," I whisper, my hands fidgeting.
"Well, I figured," Nathan says, "Kat isn't a name for an Abnegation." Nathan is wise, cunning, and clever. Of course he knew. He's like the most observant person you'll ever find in the city.
"Is Nathan your real name?" I ask.
He shrugs. "I've never seen my birth certificate, so I don't know for sure. Nathan is what everyone calls me, so I think so."
I nod. "Neither have I."
Six hours later...
I find a phone, standing there by the chasm. I can spot the phone case, dark grey with a white 4 on it. TOBIAS?! Yea, that's my brother's phone alright.
30 minutes later...
I walk into my brother's apartment with Tris. I can eyeball at last ten things wrong with this place. Neither of them are organized, they are knowingly breaking the Dauntless law of only black and red in apartment complexes by smuggling sheets from Candor, along with the acrid smell of burning liquor. I feel like I'm going to gag.
"Catherine?" my brother asks, "Are you alright?"
"Better than ever!" I lie. I feel like absolute garbage.
Looking around this apartment, I can see a damaged microwave, an obviously unused oven, along with boxes on top of a stove. Do they cook? My gosh.
"Do you need me to clean?" I ask subconsciously.
"No! Please, don't! I think it looks fine, don't you?" Tobias asks.
It is such a WRECK IT IS MURDERING MY INSIDES. "Yes it looks perfectly fine. Who cares about cleaning, anyway?!"
The doorbell rings. "What in the living heck?"
I answer the door.
"KAT?!" Nathan yells, dropping the pizza.
"Oh hi Nathan!" I reply.
"Why are you here?!" I yell.
"Four left his phone at the chasm," I respond.
"How did you know it was his?" Nathan asks.
"Four, pass me your phone!" I demand.
Tobias passes me his phone. The white 4.
Nathan laughs hysterically. "What in the world?! Why would my initiate trainer be so cocky?!"
We both laugh.
"Yea. Sorry, Nate. Let's go..... outside." I whisper.
We run outside the apartment.
"Kat! What in the world?!" Nathan yells.
"Let me explain, Nate, please!" I plead.
"Yes, it's fine." Nathan says rationally.
"Okay. You know the creep on the bus the other day?" I say in a rush.
Nathan nods, his cornrows dancing around.
"It's my father. Marcus. He was physically abusive. He tricked us all into wanting suicide." I say again, my palms growing sweaty.
Nathan kisses me on the lips, cutting me off. "I'm glad you finally explained. Before the initiate trainer. You don't have to be nervous, chill."
"Thanks, Nate. Four's also my brother, by the way," I mutter under my breath.
"The rankings are rigged!" Nathan yells.
"No," I say, "I demanded Four to have Uriah rank me, just because I don't want to cheat."
I feel my eyes starting to water. My eyes let loose of all the tears held in for so many years. One tear gets out of the prison, and the rest of the tears follow.
Nathan grasps me in his arms and mutters nice things to me like, "It's gonna be okay."
I nod, continuing to cry. "Sorry, Nathan, for not explaining earlier."
"You explained eventually," Nathan says, "That's the most important thing."
"Don't tell." I demand.
"Of course I won't," Nathan replies.
"Thank you," I say into his arms before giving him one, long kiss on the lips.
