Chapter 3

"The test!" Four yelled down the halls.

We were assigned in fighting pairs. Nathan looked behind us and all around the room. Everyone was there, except for Uriah. Nathan sighed in relief again. He must really hate Uriah. Nathan and I weren't paired together, or me and Natalia, or Nathan and Natalia. I'm against a girl named Jennifer. A Dauntless born. In the waiting room, Four walked up to me. I just pretended like he wasn't there.

"Kat." Four said.

I stared at him blankly, with confusion and hatred in my facial expression.

"Yes." I replied.

"Where'd you get that burn? Did you jump into a fire pit?" Four asked.

"Stop it, Four." I replied.

"Did you ask the cook to burn you?" Four asked again.

Oh my god.

"No." I reply.

"What happened?" Four asks.

"I ran into the stove." I reply.

"So you we walking then, oops! I didn't see the flame! What did you tell your parents? It was a total accident! You're not that clumsy." Four teases.

"You're not funny." I reply, "Just shut up."

"Your Abnegation parents just let you?" Four asks.

"I'm not a stiff." I mumble, "I'm Dauntless now."

"Once a stiff, always a stiff." Four mumbles.

"Shut up, Four." I said sternly.

"Kat!" Tris called as I walked into the room.

Jennifer looked ready to fight. I trembled as I walked up. I suddenly stopped. I'm not a coward. I'm ready to fight her. Jennifer made the first move. She tried to punch me on the arm. I punched her back. She kicked me in the neck and I fall down to the floor.

"Stop playing with eachother." Eric mumbles, groaning.

"I'm in charge of this, Erica." Four mumbles.

"Stop that!" Eric yells, "Stop being Kat!"

"Come on, Catherine, you can do this." I hear Mom's voice in my head.

I jump back up to my feet and punch Jennifer in the face, hitting the nose, and making it bleed. What an idiot. I aimed for her neck with my elbow. I'm petite. I can't use my fists or my feet. I can try. She punches me in the elbow. I flip Jennifer down to the ground. Jennifer dozed off. I pounced on top of her. She coughed. She started to bleed slightly. I scratched her with my finger nail.

She jumped up. I aimed to kick her in the place. The place you shouldn't kick someone. She fell down to the ground.

"Stop!" Four yelled.

"Planned to." I replied.

"Smart mouth." Four mumbled.

"Just shut up, dumbbell." I reply.

"I'm smarter than you." Four says.

"JUST SHUT UP!" I yell.

I walked out of the room. I ran to Natalia.

"Natalia?" I asked.

"Yes?" She replied.

"I want to be advanced." I said.

"No girls have ever gotten in." She replied.

"How'd you know that?" I asked.

"Hacked onto Erudite computers." She replied, whispering this time.

"Oh. I can still hope." I said.

Natalia ran to Jennifer as Nathan ran to me.

"No girls have ever gotten into advanced." I said.

"Trust me. You will." Nathan replied.

Uriah walked up to Nathan.

"Hey, man, what's up?" Uriah asks.

Nathan trembles in fear.

"Nothin much." Nathan replies, scratching his head.

"Okay." Uriah mumbles.

I nod.

"Nathan!" Uriah called.

Nathan trembled as he walks into the room, taking baby steps as he walks, desperately trying to nit act like a coward.

"Wish me luck." He mouths to me.

Why? Why does he need it? He was born here, in Dauntless, where people probably beat each other up every second of every day.

"Good luck, Nathan." I mouthed.

Nathan nods as the door shuts between us, terrifying him and making me worried. What should I do about this Nathan/Uriah thing? How am I supposed to find out? I decided to be a spy and see what's going on between Nathan and Uriah. Why is Nathan acting like he's afraid of Uriah? He's harmless. Literally. All he says is Dauntless cake. I looked into the window, because I wanted to know why Nathan's afraid of Uriah. I saw Nathan, fighting against one of the strongest initiates, Helena. Nathan jumps up to his feet, feeling this surge full of confidence entering his system.

"Fight!" Uriah yelled.

Nathan let Helena take the first move. Helena tried punching him in the neck. Nathan jumped. Helena punched him mid-air. Nathan did a flip and blocked the punch. Nathan landed back on the ground. Helena tried to kick him, but he did a cartwheel. Helena put her foot in his mouth instead.

"Gross." Nathan mumbles.

"Ugh!" Helena roared.

Nathan resumed jumping in the air. Nathan finally landed on his feet. He punched Helena in the face. He did a back handspring and kicked Helena in the stomach. Helena fell back. Helena hopped back up to her feet and punched Nathan, square in the face. Nathan had a bloody nose. He made sure to blow all the blood on Helena. Helena choked on his blood. Clever move, Nathan. He did a back handspring and kicked Helena to the floor.

"Stop!" Uriah yelled.

"Do you really think I was going to hurt someone on purpose?" Nathan asks.

"Yea." Four mumbles, "You're an initiate."

Nathan gulps down some air, looking like he's trying to keep a secret, but he's obviously failing at it. Which secret is he keeping?

"You are dismissed." Uriah announced.

Helena was not as much hurt as she was covered with Nathan's blood. Nathan walked out of the room.

"Good job, Nathan." I whispered to him.

"Thanks." He replied, wiping the blood off his nose.

We ran to dinner. Nathan and I grabbed a slice of cake, but he didn't eat anything.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

"Nothing." He lied.

"Are you sure?" I asked.

His face suddenly looked frightened. He stuffed cake in his face as he ran out of the room. Comfort foods. I know how that feels. I followed him to a random cabin and fell asleep.

Nathan POV

I feel the pain in my bones as I watch all the other initiates go to sleep. I just need Helena to die. I know she will kill me somewhere else. I don't know if I survive. I honestly don't know. It kills me every time I think about it.

"Goodnight nobody." I mutter then I fall asleep.
