Chapter Two
Edited: Me fetus writing makes me wanna hurl
——————
I wake up in my uncomfortable bed, my vision still blurry, but at least the ringing in my ears subsided.
I look to my right to see a green blur. Toxic. And I look to my left as my vision starts to clear up and see Dark sitting there, his hands in tight fists, brought up under his chin and his elbows resting on his knees.
"Violet?" I hear Toxic's soft voice, and for once she sounds concerned. Just as I'm about to face Toxic again, Dark looks up, and smiles a sad smile.
"Violet, I'm sorry. Are you okay? How's your leg?" He asks, his voice shaky.
"My leg? What happened to my leg?" I say, finding my voice just as shaky as his.
"Snake bite," Toxic says, appearing next to Dark, "They were Rattlesnakes so, a lot of venom, a lot of shots."
You see, this is why I hate snakes.
"What happened?" I ask, my voice a little less shaky and more curious.
"The doctor says that your eyes flashed red when you screamed," Dark says, "Then when your eyes went normal, all the snakes were dead, the glass box had a crack in it, and you fainted."
My mouth dried up. I was too in shock to speak. Too many thoughts racing through my head to keep up.
How did this happen? What happened to me? What am I?
And then the worst thought went through my head, blocking out all the others.
What if I could kill people? Humans? More than snakes?
Okay, so more than one thought. But still, it scared me. I'm never scared. Except for when I'm forced into a giant glass box full of snakes, that is.
After Dark and Toxic explained a little more, I could finally speak. I asked more questions that were unimportant. But still kept a thought in my head, What am I capable of?
Now, that. That question alone was enough to make me scared for life.
———
Twenty-four hours later, I'm allowed out of bed. At lunch, Diana and Impact are sitting with us. I find out that Diana is rooming with Twitch and Impact is alone in the room next to Dark and Spark.
"I hear Juniper is coming back," says Twitch, shoving bland mashed potatoes into her mouth.
"Who's Juniper?" Impact asks, his tone annoyed, even though he has nothing to be annoyed about.
"Juniper's a friend that was brought to The Ditch along with Dark," Spark answers, not looking at Impact.
"The Ditch? What's that?" Diana asks.
"The Ditch is a torture place basically. If you're new and they don't know how your powers work, you go to The Ditch," Spark says, finally looking at Impact, "Or if you get a new ability, you go to The Ditch. It's a testing place, basically," Diana's smile fades.
"Impact and I wont go there, right?" She asks, worried.
"They know how your powers work," I say, "If they didn't, right now, you'd be in The Ditch, getting experimented on," Impact looks away from Spark for a second to look at me, then he says, "How? How do they know how our powers work?"
"I'm not completely sure. Usually, it's from previous tests at different hospitals or it's just your genetics," I say, looking at Impact straight in the eye. He just stares for a second then looks back to Spark, who is still looking at him.
We're all silent for a while, but then Twitch breaks it, "I just remembered! There's a new kid coming... Again."
"Again?" Dark says, his voice slightly high pitched.
"Mhm, and he's supposed to be really hot," Twitch says, nodding and smiling.
Smiling is so rare here. Yet, we've been smiling frequently, "He's coming during operating, today." Impact and Diana have been here about a week and haven't had their first operation. I have a feeling some new screams will be going around.
We do our normal routine. Intercom tells us to go somewhere, we head out in our lines, and walk to the room we are instructed to go to, led by guards, of course.
We walk up the stairs and to the right this time, the doors to the operating room are red, and at the end of the hall.
When we enter, the guards move out of our way and let us go to the seats, sectioned above the operating table, in a glass box. I hate the operation room. The screams you hear in here follow you around for months, then you hear a whole new round of screams the following month.
We go up the stairs to the observation room. When we get up there, two seats are already taken, one by a boy. He has blue and white hair, he had the grayest eyes ever, and blue-ish skin. He is packed with muscle. I'm guessing the new kid.
And in the other seat is... Juniper. She has tan skin, short dirty blond hair with a red streak in it, you cant even see her eyes under her bangs. Freckles all over.
God, I've missed her.
I start to walk towards her with a smile. When she sees us, she stands up and hugs me, then the rest, not including Diana. Juniper asks a few questions like, New kid? and, What's her ability? And of course we answer, then I notice that Impact isn't with us but with the new kid, in the front row of chairs. I excuse myself from my friend group and walk over to Impact and the new kid.
"Hello," I say, standing in front of the stranger,"I'm Violet, you must be the new kid."
"Hi," He says, casually, "I'm Voodoo."
"What's your ability?" I ask.
"His ability is close to your own," Impact answers for Voodoo, "He has mind control." Another one like me? I wonder if he's ever killed someone.
"Wait seriously?" I ask.
"Yeah, I guess," He says, "It really depends on what your power is."
"Um, I have mind control too, I can suppress powers, I can kill with my mind, I can read minds and move things with my mind," I say, counting off my fingers.
"Wow," Voodoo says, his eyes wide and Impacts jaw dropped, "Well, I'm never going to cross you because I might die."
"Hopefully not," I mumble, sitting down in the chair next to Voodoo.
"Vi, why'd you come over here?" Juniper asks, plopping down next to me.
"I wanted to meet Voodoo, the new kid," I reply, adjusting my pigtails. Everyone else walks over and sits in the long set of chairs in the first row, each talking to each other about Voodoo. They each introduce themselves and 'welcome' him to Reap.
"Toxic Morana," Came a voice from the intercom, "Please, head to the operation table."
Toxic always goes first because she doesn't scream, its easier for the new kids to see her first and then see the rest of us go, screaming, trying to break out of the straps, keeping us down.
It's horrific.
Toxic stands and walks out of the door, down the stairs and to the operation table. She lays down without a word as the doctors, covered in radiation proof clothing, strap her down. They flip the table so it's upward and start attaching things to her, sticking needles in her arm to draw blood, taking brain scans and then sending an electric shock through her body that disturbs all her vital organs and nervous systems, making her flinch.
After around five minutes, they unstrap her and she calmly walks back up the stairs and sits down.
"Twitch, come on down."
They do the same thing they did to Toxic on her. Then everyone else. All of them screaming.
Now, its my turn. I walk out the door and down the stairs, breathing heavily the whole way to the table. I lay on the table, they strap me down and instantly I start to cry. They don't give me the same operation that everyone else gets. They flip the table, attach things onto me then connect the little tabs that send the electronic shock through your body, onto my head and turn it on. That's when the ear-splitting scream comes, that's when I black out for a few seconds and wake up in my chair in the observation room.
My head is on Dark's shoulder and I'm crying. Will Voodoo have to endure that? I think, worryingly. Dark rubs my shoulder, in attempt to calm me.
Impact goes down next and gets the normal procedure. Then, it's Voodoos turn. He hesitates before getting up out of his chair and walking to the table, shaking his head. Just before he lays on the table, all the doctors in the room drop everything and go limp and glassy eyed.
All of us seem to freeze for a second as well but we're still very much functioning. I stare at Voodoo and take in his stance and smug facial expression. He's controlling them.
I start debating on whether or not to go down and help him. I decided on yes.
I get up from my chair and run down the stairs, followed by everyone else. Once I get down there, I nod to Voodoo and he releases half of the doctors from his manipulation and I take hold of them. I lift my hand and fling it up, to the right, I send the doctors flying, knocking them into the observation window, leaving them unconscious and probably with a concussion. Impact walks up to one of the doctors, touches his arm and he bursts into flames, disintegrating into thin air.
My eyes widen as my jaw drops.
Astonishing.
We finish off the rest, Toxic poisoning someone, Spark and Dark electrocuting some people. Diana tying them up. All of us doing our thing. I swipe a key card from one of the doctors and we make a run for it.
We burst through the operation room doors and run down the halls, fighting through guards and random patients that are in our way.
We make it to the entrance and I swipe the card on the pad. The doors open and for the first time, I get to see the Sun.
It's big, bright, and.... Hurting my eyes. The cool breeze envelopes me, I squint at the Sun and smile. I love the outdoors.
After a minute of everyone adjusting, and hearing alarms blaring, we start running again. We're in a place where it's cool, bright and forest is all around us.
Voodoo leads us through the forest, where we reach a gravel road, there's a van parked on the side.
"Spark can you hot wire the car?" Voodoo asks, out of breath.
"Hot- what?" Spark asks confused.
"Just shoot it with your lightning!" Voodoo yells, impatiently.
"Oh, okay," his finger tips lighting up with electricity. He shocks the van and we all jump in. It's an eight seater, thankfully. Voodoo gets into the drivers seat, Impact in the passenger's, Spark and Dark and Twitch, Diana, Toxic and I in the middle and Juniper in the over sized trunk. Voodoo drives fast down he road and turns left, leading us to a paved road, lined with trees.
Suddenly, we start to hear cars moving behind us... and loud noises ringing out.
"God damn it," Juniper comments, ducking her head and covering her ears.
"What's that noise?!" Spark yells, directing it towards Voodoo.
"Guns," he answers, plainly, leaving all the 'I've never seen the Sun before' kids confused.
We drive faster and faster, then the van is about to give out.
"Violet!" Voodoo yells, "Can you propel the van forward?"
"Maybe," I say, "It might be too heavy, but I'll try."
I stand up, hunching over and climb into the trunk, Juniper opens the doors and I stick my hands and head out. I see my eyes go red in the window as I conjure up my powers, I try to propel it forward but it doesn't work.
Next thing I know, Diana is pushing the van using her speed and strength and Spark is lighting it up again, trying to help me. I try again, and the van starts rolling faster and faster, then Diana stops pushing and crawls back into the van and Spark is done hot wiring it, leaving it to me.
Juniper creates a force field around the van to protect us from 'guns'(I assume), but once we get going fast enough and can't see or hear the other cars anymore, she puts the force field down and closes the trunk door. She takes my place next to Twitch and I continue to propel the van, feeling powerful.
