Chapter Three
About a half an hour later, we enter a small town, Voodoo says that there's a gas station at both ends of the town, where he can fill up the van, so, I don't have to keep moving it.
He parks at a gas pump and tells Impact to go out and fill the gas tank.
"Why can't you do it?" I ask.
"Well, blue skin isn't common, outside Reap's walls," He says, turning around to face the back.
"Oh," I say, quietly.
Impact comes back into the car and says that we're all filled up and ready to go.
"Great, let's get some food for the drive," Voodoo says, "Violet, Twitch, Impact, go into the station and buy some food."
"Why do I have to go?" Impact whines, as I open the door and step out of the van.
"Because, you know how to do this," Voodoo replies, "They don't. Help them." Twitch gets out after me, and Impact jumps out of the front passengers seat, mumbling something under his breath.
We enter the gas station's front door, a bell ringing as we step in. Twitch and I look around curiously, picking up things that say, Snickers or Starbursts or Hershey's. Impact explains that it's candy. Something that's supposed to be sweet. We head to the back of the station, opening a door, a blast of cool air hitting us. He says it's fridge, something to hold things that need to stay cold. He grabs some water bottles and closes the door.
We head back to the snack section, he grabs somethings like Beef Jerky, Canned Soup, Pop Tarts, doughnuts and Skittles, we go back to the front of the station and turn right, leading us to a Sandwich shop, he asks for twenty sandwiches, which I think is an excessive amount of food, but he says it'll last us a while.
We pay for our stuff and run out the door and back to the van. I hand out the sandwiches to everyone, and Twitch hands out the water. We put the rest into the trunk, where Juniper has retaken her seat, so I sit next to Toxic and Diana again.
"How's the food?" Voodoo asks, after I take a bite, then a few more.
"Good," I say, my mouth full.
"Good." He repeats. A little while later Impact presses a button and music comes from all around us, he fiddles and turns it a little until landing on Brother by Falling In Reverse. He sings along, Diana joining in at some point, then Voodoo.
We all continue to shove food into our mouths. I can't believe I've never had a BLT or bacon, lettuce, tomato sandwich. It's delicious.
We continue to drive, one song playing after the last. Filling the van with sound. Spark, Toxic, Diana and Juniper had fallen asleep, leaving, Impact, Voodoo, Twitch and Dark awake with me. We didn't talk much, only listened to Dance, Dance by Fall Out Boy, Voodoo keeping his eyes on the road.
At one point during the drive I fall asleep and wake up when the sun is rising and Impact is now driving. The radio is still on and playing, Boys Don't Cry, by As It Is. Voodoo is now asleep, Dark is too, along with Twitch. The rest are awake but still seem half asleep. Diana is eating a Pop Tart so is Toxic and the others, including Impact are eating doughnuts.
We drive for a little while longer when suddenly a deer appears in front of the van, Impact doesn't see in time but hits the brakes. But, right before the van hits it, the deer changes into a girl. A beautiful girl with gray skin, red hair and wild gray eyes. She holds out her hands, in front of her, just before the van hits, she gets pushed a little at first but then the van stops. My jaw drops and eyes go wide. Wow, I thought, astounded.
"What the fuck?!" Voodoo yells, his nose dripping with blood and his eyes wide and looking at the girl.
I jump out of the van, wanting to see this magnificent person up close, Impact and Voodoo coming out with me. Then, everyone else following.
"I'm sorry," The girl says looking at her feet.
"It's fine," I say, stepping closer to her," What's your name?"
She hesitates a moment before saying," Lamia."
"Are you a child-eating monster?" Impact says, laughing.
"... No." She says, shooting her eyes up to glare at him.
"What are your names?" She asks, looking from one of us to the other. We introduce our selves.
"Are you a Special?" I ask.
"A special?" She asks back.
"Someone with powers," I explain.
"... Y-yes... Are you?"
"Yeah, we are," I say, " Do you want to come with us? We're running from the people that want to capture us and experiment on us, basically and if you're here then they might get you too."
Without a word, she jumps into the back of the van, the rest of us going back to our seats.
We drive, listening to more music on the way, Lamia eating a doughnut and humming to the music. Voodoo says we're traveling to an abandon part of the U.S. we're going to Los Angeles, California. He says it was abandon twenty-seven years ago when they found Specials were living there in secret. Right now, we're by the border of Colorado and Utah.
As we drive, I start seeing signs, one saying it's a mile 'til Utah.
The gas tank is almost empty again, meaning we have to find a gas station or I have to propel it forward again. Luckily before we run out of gas, we see another gas station and fill up the tank, Diana heading in and buying some more food. Lamia tends to eat a lot.
After that we continue on, singing along to songs that play over and over, etching themselves into my brain.
I wish it would be like this forever.
But before I know it, I hear gun shots.
