Chapter 37
Luna walks slowly into the parking lot of the police station, the world moving in slow motion, a buzzing in her ears. All she can see is him. His inhuman corpse lying on the ground of the apartment, surrounded by positive memories of her time with them. Her time with him.
Flashback after flashback peeling her away from reality. The blood – so much blood. His cold dead eyes watching her, pleading, begging, asking. The soft, sad tone of the paramedic, the confirmation from the doctor at the hospital. Their words repeat over and over like her own personal hell is stuck on replay.
"I'm sorry, he's gone,"
"Time of death, 10:13,"
"Are you his next of kin? Does he have a will or any special requests?"
She blinks away her tears, her feet heavy as she makes her way up the stairs and into the lobby. She moves towards the elevator, barely registering the voices around her.
She moves to her desk, dropping her bag as she flops onto her seat, staring off into the distance. Every time she closes her eyes, she sees him. His smile, his teasing, his charisma. She can see him gesturing to her, telling her to follow him.
Her throat is tight, but her body is numb. It's as if she died with him and is now moving through the world as an empty shell.
What do I have left to lose?
"Briefing!" Mr Lee calls out, startling Luna from her dissociation. She sits up, taking a deep breath in. She can't wallow in him now. She can't give up. Taehyung needs her, and Yoongi needs her.
Once this is all over, she will think about it then.
She has to.
"Come on, Yoongi," Luna sighs, standing up from her desk. When she doesn't get a response, she looks at his desk. It is empty, not a cup, a jacket, or a bag in sight. Where is he?
Is he my next warning?
Her heart jumps, thumping painfully in her chest. Seokjin wouldn't kill him... would he?
If he's touched a hair on his head, I'll kill him.
She pulls out her cheap burner phone, checking for any messages. He hasn't tried to contact her. She sends him a text asking him where he is before moving to the conference room.
She sits at the back by herself, her leg restlessly jiggling. Her eyes are narrowed, red and puffy from the previous night, her gaze trained on the door.
Her mind wanders off, her imagination running wild with the image of Seokjin locked in a room with her. Mourning and self-pity are gone. All that's left is intense loathing.
Eventually, Seokjin enters. His eyes instantly meet hers, as if he can feel the burning intensity of her gaze. He smiles, looking around at the other detectives.
He stands at the podium and begins the morning briefing. He says something about charity and events, but Luna isn't listening. All she can hear is the continuous dripping sound of his blood, exiting whatever wound she can give him, her imagination giving her intense visuals. It calms her.
"Detective Luna," Seokjin looks at her, "You have been assigned case 131095,"
Mr Lee passes her the folder, frowning at her dangerous expression. She holds it but doesn't open it. Her eyes are trained on Seokjin, like a missile ready to launch.
"All right, dismissed,"
Luna waits for the others to leave before walking past Seokjin and Mr Lee, already expecting him to try and get a rise out of her.
"Detective Luna," Seokjin says, grabbing her attention. She turns her narrowed gaze to him. What's the point in pretending? Yoongi isn't here to rein her in; she only has her dysregulation to guide her.
"What?" She snaps.
Mr Lee's eyes widen at her tone, looking at Seokjin nervously. But Seokjin doesn't react, he just keeps smiling.
"Yoongi has called in sick," Seokjin explains, "I expect to have your work finished today,"
"Whatever," Luna mutters, starting forward.
"Also," Seokjin grabs her arm, "Don't get too distracted by that case, okay?"
She frowns, harshly pulling from his grip so she can read it. As soon as she opens it, her stomach drops. This isn't just any case that he has given her. This is the investigation of Jimin's murder. His twisted corpse looks up at her from the bloody scene she found him in, the scene of the crime.
Her hooded eyes lift to his, her hands shaking with longing, begging her to tear him down where he stands.
"Fuck you," She mutters darkly.
"Detective Luna!" Mr Lee yells, stepping between them, "I'm so sorry, sir,"
"It's okay," Seokjin sighs, smiling kindly at Mr Lee, "She is grieving, I won't take it personally,"
"It's no excuse," Mr Lee says firmly, "I'll ensure she is disciplined,"
Luna scoffs, spinning around to storm out of the room. There is an intense buzzing in her ears, almost completely muffling Mr Lee's yells and demands as he attempts to follow her. She heads straight to the office she shares with Yoongi, slamming and locking the door behind her.
She cries out, pegging the folder at the ground in rage. She pulls out the burner phone, calling Yoongi's number. It rings out.
"Yoongi, you better not be dead," Luna mutters, trying to call him again. He doesn't answer.
Luna stands in the middle of the room, breathing deeply. Her fists clench and unclench, her fingers tingling with the boiling anger inside her. She wants to punch something, kick something, skin someone, anything.
She takes a few, deep, shuddering breaths, trying to calm herself. She can't let him get to her. But what else can she do?
Yoongi is probably dead, Jimin is dead, Hoseok is going to be dead, and Taehyung will die if she gets him involved, so now she is left with two options:
Do as she is told, or:
Become Faith.
Well, Luna frowns, picking up Jimin's file, If he wants Faith, I'll give him Faith.
So, Luna spends the rest of the day looking into Jimin's death. She knows exactly what happened, so she inputs this information as a witness statement. She returns to the apartment, too numb to register the grief as she searches through Hoseok's belongings. He hasn't left anything useful behind, but she has his number.
Of course, that doesn't reveal anything. Its last known location is that apartment. He either destroyed it or hid it there. She picks apart the entire case, checking security footage and other witness accounts, anything she can think of. She tries to trace the bullets found in Jimin's body, but they are unregistered, of course.
She isn't expecting much to come from her investigation, but she needs to do something. She refuses to do what Seokjin says. She would rather die.
Now, it is 7 pm, and Luna is leaving her office to head home. Seokjin is leaning against the wall just outside of the room, which doesn't surprise her.
"What?" She snaps.
"Arrest warrant?" Seokjin asks.
"You can suck my dick," Luna retorts, rolling her eyes as she turns away from him.
"Tomorrow, Luna," Seokjin calls out to her, "If you don't, then I will,"
"I assume there is a reason you need me to do it?" Luna looks over her shoulder at him and smirks, "So, you can suck my dick,"
"Luna..." He mutters darkly. Apparently, he does have a limit for her attitude.
"Goodbye, Mr Eye," She calls out loudly, "See you tomorrow,"
She enters the elevator and heads out into the parking lot. Once she gets to the bottom of the stairs out the front, she is called on once again.
"Luna!" She turns around, watching as Taehyung storms towards her from his car.
Can't get a break, can I?
Wait... maybe...
Luna smirks, moving away from him across the parking lot.
"YAH!" He quickens his pace, following her. She stops in the corner of the parking lot; the spot Yoongi took her to. This spot is safe, she knows it is.
He grabs her arm, tugging her so she is facing him. He looks really pissed this time.
"Are you seriously going to avoid me? Huh?" Taehyung snaps.
"Just shut the fuck up and listen," Luna grumbles, glaring up at him, "I can't tell you anything. I'm in danger, you're in danger. Give me your phone,"
"W... what?" Taehyung blinks.
"I said give me your fucking phone Tae!" Luna snaps. Quickly, he pulls his phone out, passing it to her. She promptly types in Yoongi's number, adding his address into the notes of the contact.
"Call him, meet with him," Luna mutters, "He will explain everything, okay?"
"Luna..." Taehyung sighs, "What's going on?"
"I'm being watched Tae, just call him!" She snaps aggressively, "If he doesn't answer, go to his house, okay?"
Before he can reply, she turns and leaves him standing there. She knows she should feel bad for him in this moment, but she doesn't have room for those types of conflicting feelings. Right now, she is Faith, and Faith is getting revenge. She doesn't look back at him or check to see if he's calling Yoongi.
As she walks further away from the police station, heading to the subway line, she pulls out her phone, looking for Namjoon's number.
She rings and he picks up.
"Luna? Are you okay?" Namjoon answers almost instantly.
"Come to my house, now," Luna says firmly.
"Oh... is it plan B time?" He asks.
She sighs deeply, her jaw aching from all the clenching she has done today.
"Yeah, it is,"
. . . . .
"So, what's the plan?" Namjoon asks, sitting down at Luna's dining table.
"Have you been in contact with The Eye yet?" Luna asks, coldly sitting beside him. His eyes waver for a moment, a little startled by her shift in behaviour in comparison to last night.
"Not yet," He replies, "You told me to wait,"
"Good," Luna nods, "Organise the meet up,"
"Are you sure?" Namjoon frowns, "Have you been in contact with Jimin yet?"
Luna takes a deep breath in, her brain trying to sink back into the grief at the mention of his name.
"Jimin is dead," She breathes, "Hoseok killed him,"
Namjoon's mouth falls open as he begins to blink rapidly. He clenches his fists on the table, his eyes narrowing at her.
"What happened?" He asks darkly.
Luna emotionlessly explains what happened last night and everything Hoseok said to her. He closes his eyes, bringing his hands up to his mouth in contemplation, trying to calm himself.
Namjoon was quite close to Jimin, but he was closer with Hoseok. They were very good friends, attending training and fighting together as they grew up. Hoseok focused on understanding weapons and how to trade, where-as Namjoon started his leadership training, at their father's request. Other than the family, Hoseok is the only other person who knows Namjoon's real name. In front of others, he calls him RM, but they grew up together.
This news must be making Namjoon feel distraught.
"I understand," Namjoon mutters, lifting his gaze to her, "I'll organise the meet up,"
"Good," Luna nods.
"Wait," Namjoon frowns, "Does that mean you... are going to work for me?"
"Yes," Luna confirms, "I'll be Faith,"
. . . . .
Taehyung:
Taehyung paces his apartment restlessly, looking down at his phone. He has never been more confused in his life. Instinctually, he wants to believe Luna. But everything is pointing to her keeping secrets, meeting up with Jungkook and seeking her previous flings.
He is sure Jimin is not the sort of person to go behind his back and meet with her like that. He is terrible at keeping secrets, and this would be a big one.
But Jimin is refusing to answer his calls, which is a huge red flag. Is he avoiding him, so he doesn't have to tell him the truth?
He wants to hate her, break up with her, and confront them. But nothing is making any sense.
It would be a lot easier if he was able to work. But ever since Monday, when Mr Kim Seokjin told him he's not allowed to be part of the task force anymore, he has had nothing to do. His boss sent him an email claiming he can't give him anymore cases 'Pending an investigation'.
But what investigation?
Taehyung went to his boss for answers, but he was vague, telling him to just sit tight and wait for the results. The results of what you ask? He is not allowed to know apparently.
He visited Seokjin today, looking for answers surrounding this 'investigation'. He assumed that considering he removed him from the task force, he would know what this investigation is about. But he was equally as vague, even irritable with him.
Then, Luna gets angry at him, telling him that they are in danger, and he needs to call Yoongi.
But the asshole won't fucking answer.
On top of all this, he is battling his heart and mind at every step of the way. His brain has concluded that she is cheating on him. He is sure that the investigation at work probably has something to do with a client. Sometimes when a perpetrator is angry at the opposing council, they'll file insane lawsuits that make no sense. It explains the secrecy surrounding this so called 'investigation'.
But his heart and gut? Only two words; Impending doom.
His gut feeling is that something serious and dangerous has happened, which has been corroborated by Luna today. But he thinks this is just a trauma response. He went through a lot when he first met Luna. Surely all this is just his brain mixing the events up. He is safe here.
He looks down at his phone for the umpteenth time, reading through the texts he has sent Yoongi.
TAE: *Missed call*
TAE: Hey, Luna said I need to call you for answers?
TAE: *Missed call*
TAE: *Missed call*
TAE: Yoongi?
TAE: *Missed call*
He has been waiting for an hour for a response. Did she give him the right phone number?
He opens the contact, eyeing Yoongi's address nervously.
"If he doesn't answer, go to his house, okay?"
Sighing deeply, he grabs his keys, leaving his apartment. He has two choices, follow his gut or follow his mind. Right now, his mind is running out of ideas. So, gut it is.
He speeds off to the address in Yoongi's contact, reaching the location in record time. The address leads Taehyung to a nice apartment complex. Frowning, he checks the contact again. Luna has also provided him with the pin for the complex and the one to his apartment.
He parks his car and climbs out, approaching the front doors. He types in the pin, and it opens.
Huh, so this is the right place.
Feeling a little uncomfortable, he heads to the nearest elevator casually. Should he really be just entering Yoongi's apartment like this?
He heads up to his floor, feeling more and more apprehensive. Surely, this would be rude. What if Yoongi gets angry at him?
He approaches Yoongi's front door and decides to knock first.
Knock, knock.
Nothing.
Frowning, he tries again.
KNOCK, KNOCK.
Nothing.
"Min Yoongi?" Taehyung calls out, "It's me, Kim Taehyung... I've been calling you,"
Again, nothing.
Anxiety and apprehension settle in the pit of his stomach. A part of him doesn't want to open the door. Does he really want answers?
Yes, Taehyung nods to himself, I need to know the truth.
He types in the second pin, opening the door to the apartment. He steps inside, frowning at the darkness. There is only one light on in the entire apartment, and it is peeking out of one of the rooms. Taehyung moves towards it, spotting a shape on the bed.
It's Yoongi.
"Yoongi?" Taehyung calls out. He doesn't respond. He approaches the bed, looking around the room.
Then, he spots it.
Blood.
"YOONGI! MIN YOONGI!" Taehyung yells, rushing towards Yoongi. He shakes him roughly, hoping and begging he wakes up.
"What the... WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?"
Taehyung blinks, his mouth agape as Yoongi sits up, rubbing his head tentatively. He is staring at Taehyung as if he is a burglar who just broke into his house.
"Y... Yoongi?" Taehyung looks down at the little patch of dry blood, "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," He coughs, looking down at the stain, "I think there was something in my delivery food... what time is it?"
"It's almost 9 pm... Wednesday," Taehyung explains. Yoongi's head whips towards him, his eyes widening.
"Wednesday night?!" He repeats, "I was out for 24 hours?! What the fuck!"
Taehyung and Yoongi calm themselves down, slowly moving into Yoongi's living room. Taehyung explains what Luna said to him and Yoongi checks his phone.
"Fuck..." Yoongi sighs, "I hope she is okay..."
"What's going on, Yoongi?" Taehyung asks. Yoongi shakes his head, gesturing for Taehyung to be quiet for a moment. He makes himself a coffee and grabs a bottle of water.
"Urgh, my stomach is killing me," Yoongi sighs, "I guess alcohol doesn't mix well with whatever they fucking gave me,"
"How do you know someone attacked you?" Taehyung asks.
"No, you're right," Yoongi scoffs, "I just vomited some blood and slept for 24 hours on my own, my bad,"
"Please don't be sarcastic with me," Taehyung pleads, "I don't know what's going on, you scared the shit out of me, and Luna might be in danger,"
Yoongi watches him for a moment, sighing deeply at the sight of Taehyung's distress.
"All right," Yoongi mutters, "What do you know?"
Taehyung explains what happened with Jungkook, at work, and his conversations with Luna.
"I see what they're doing..." Yoongi sighs, "They are trying to push Luna over the edge, so she becomes Faith,"
"Who is?" Taehyung frowns.
"The Eye... Kim Seokjin," Yoongi says firmly.
"Okay," Taehyung laughs in disbelief, "I'm gonna need you to back up a few steps and explain what the fuck is going on,"
Yoongi explains everything that has happened over the past few days. Luna's kidnapping, what she found out when she was taken, how they dropped her off in an alley, and how Yoongi found her. He also explains their plan to find proof that Seokjin is The Eye, whilst trying to disprove the allegations made against Taehyung. He explains that Seokjin said he would kill Taehyung if they told him what was happening.
"Ah... that explains her frustration with me..." Taehyung nods, guilt bubbling up inside him, "Well, it's too late, I know now. So, what can I do?"
Yoongi smirks at him, standing up to lead him to his decked-out office, fitted out with his own wall of evidence. He even has the signature red string connecting items of evidence together.
"Take your pick and get working," Yoongi smirks, gesturing to the scattered documents around the office.
(A/N) See ya tomorrow 🫰🫰🫰
