Chapter 36
She turns on the safety of the gun, placing it back in its hiding spot. She moves towards her door, locking it firmly behind Jungkook. Obviously, it isn't hard to break into this place.
"Fuck, I'm so stupid," She mutters to herself, glaring at the door, "Why can't I kill him?"
She knows the answer to this question, she just doesn't want to admit it. She pities him.
She was brought up in that life, she never had a choice. Her father, her brother, and her mother, all of them were raised in it. Jungkook wasn't. He was essentially sold to Grim for safety.
When they were little, in the training dorms, Jimin told her Jungkook's story.
Jungkook was terrified. A shivering, pathetic mess of a child. She watched as it was all beaten out of him, replaced with murderous intent. Even though they are the same age, she felt protective of him in a sense.
She wanted to save him.
After she broke up with him, she thought that her pity was gone. He had grown into a monstrous killing machine with no regard for anyone else but himself. She thought that when he cheated on her, that was her last straw. But apparently, it wasn't. Why does she still care? Why does she still pity him?
She is also very strictly trying to avoid her previous life as an assassin. She doesn't really want to kill anyone, even Seokjin. Instinctively, she wants to, desperately. But if she does, she is Faith. She ran away for a reason, so why would she go out of her way just to bring Faith back to life? She's not doing it. It's what he wants.
Why am I struggling to not be a killer?
She doesn't contemplate this for long, as her phone starts ringing. She frowns down at the caller ID. It's a private number.
Fuck it.
She answers the call.
"Hello?"
"Luna?"
"Namjoon?" Luna gasps, "How did you get my number? Why are you calling me?"
"Love you too, sis," He chuckles, "Doesn't matter, I've been informed of what's happening. I'm on my way,"
"Huh? Right now?" Luna replies.
"Yeah, I'm about to board the plane," Namjoon sighs, "It'll take me about 16 hours, I'll see you at lunchtime?"
"No!" Luna snaps, "It's dangerous. Text me when you get here and I'll send you my address, okay?"
"Oh damn, okay," Namjoon replies, sounding a little shocked, "I'll be there soon, don't worry,"
"Okay..." Luna replies. She doesn't voice the relief she feels hearing that he will be there for her soon.
He is still a jerk.
"Bye, Luna,"
He hangs up, leaving Luna reeling. All she has to do is get through the day tomorrow, and then she will see Namjoon. After, she can go visit Jimin and Hoseok and check in on them.
Should I visit them now?
As this thought pops into her head, she yawns. She is beyond tired, physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted. She doesn't feel like drinking with them, not right now. As much as she misses Jimin's laughter and Hoseok's sunshine, she has no energy.
I'll see them tomorrow night.
. . . . .
Luna's leg shakes violently, almost vibrating the whole apartment with her anxiety. She can't sit still. Sure, she's seen her brother before, but she is still terrified of interacting with him. After being successfully kidnapped, she has figured out that she isn't actually invincible.
He could take her back, or even try to force her to become Faith like Seokjin is.
It is now the evening of Tuesday, Day 3 of Operation Save Taehyung – the jerk who holds grudges even when he says it's all fine. She doesn't blame him for thinking she is cheating, considering the evidence Jungkook would have provided. But she is really peeved that he brought up Jimin.
Today was an absolute disaster. She had to pretend all day, acting like she is absolutely comfortable investigating Taehyung.
Yoongi is spending all his free time hacking into Seokjin's devices, trying to find connections between him, and the accusations made against Taehyung. So far, there is nothing. If Luna didn't know any better, she would say Seokjin has no connections to any of The Eye's activities.
Taehyung, however, can be linked to a couple of them. The rest of the information could be considered circumstantial. But Yoongi is not hopeful.
"I'll try to see what I can do tonight, but it's not looking good," Yoongi said grimly, only an hour earlier.
Then, to top it all off, Seokjin called her into his office to ask her why they haven't formally inputted Taehyung as the main suspect. She told him to ask Yoongi, telling him that Yoongi is combing through all the evidence he provided. Seokjin didn't like that answer, or her attitude, but accepted it anyway.
Luna is actually the one combing through the evidence, trying to find a loophole that a prosecutor could use to prove Taehyung isn't The Eye. Apparently, Taehyung living in America for 5 years isn't enough, considering The Eye is from there.
So, she is on the verge of genuinely praying for some good news from Namjoon. If he can't help her, she might have to give in to Seokjin's demands. Or, become Faith once again. But she doesn't want to do either of those things. Wanting and needing Namjoon, while simultaneously being terrified and angry at him is an emotional cocktail Luna is not prepared for.
KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK.
She leaps out of her seat, rushing to her front door. She peaks through the peephole, spotting a tall man on the other side, his face covered by a mask and a cap. He lowers his mask and smiles up at the peephole.
"Luna, let me in," He whispers cutely, grinning happily. She rolls her eyes, unlocking and opening the door for him.
He walks inside, smiling cheerfully at the sight of her.
"Hey, sis," He pats her head, "How have you been?"
Before she can respond, he slides off his shoes and moves into the apartment, looking around. She follows him, gesturing for him to take a seat at her dining table. He sits down gracefully, pulling off his hat and mask. It's strange how much a person can change, physically, in 5 years. His eyes are more mature, yet full of so much more love, sparkling gleefully at her. He is even taller, his chest broader, his legs longer.
Somehow, he has managed to not become anything like their father. He looks happier.
"Damn, who are you and what have you done with my brother?" Luna teases, sitting across from him.
"I know, I've become taller," He smirks.
"No, I mean... you look happy," Luna smiles sadly.
He blinks for a moment, before laughing heartily at her.
"Well, yeah," He scoffs, "I'm not doing what Dad used to do, I'm a lot happier,"
"Huh?" She frowns, "What do you mean?"
"It's a long story," He smirks, "Only specific people are allowed to know,"
"Whatever," She rolls her eyes.
"Anyway, what happened?" He asks, leaning forward as his expression becomes stern.
Luna explains everything.
Anything and everything that has happened over the past 5 years they haven't been in contact. It all just comes flowing out like a waterfall confessional. She tells him how she started dating Taehyung after he came back from America. How her boss, Seokjin, is The Eye. How The Eye died and was replaced by his son. How Yoongi found out about her, and how she dated Jimin to deal with her trauma from The Eye. How Taehyung is angry at her because Jungkook has put her in a cruel position. What The Eye wants from her, everything.
Literally. Everything.
Halfway through, she starts sobbing, her body betraying her in the cruellest way possible in front of her brother. Her crime lord brother. By the end, she is hiccupping, sniffling as she tries to control her breathing. As she starts to calm down, she realises Namjoon is holding her hands, his thumbs gliding over her knuckles to soothe her.
"Hey, it's okay," He says softly, "I'm here now, I'll help,"
"All right," She breathes. She feels a lot better after letting out the stress and fear that has been building up in her for the past few days. Even with her fear of him, it is nice to finally have her brother back. The supportive, protective brother from her childhood, instead of the drill instructor brother he was in her teen years.
"So," He stands up, pacing her small apartment, "His aim is to make you join him?"
"I guess," Luna shrugs, "I was one of the best in The Reapers... and he already has Jungkook,"
"True," Namjoon sighs, "I was wondering where he went,"
"You didn't think to find him?" Luna asks.
"No, I was busy," Namjoon explains, "I've reshuffled the entire mafia. I have people in high places, and I have changed what we do. I gave Jungkook his beating and left it at that,"
"That's fair," Luna nods, "But all of that would have been hard to enforce," Luna points out.
"It was," Namjoon smirks, that murderous glint in his eyes, "Had to teach a few lessons, but it's been great for years now,"
"Anyway," Luna chuckles, "The Eye?"
"Well, I'd say I am going to have to deal with this the old-fashioned way," Namjoon sighs, "A cease-fire with a deal,"
"Is that wise?" Luna frowns.
"Obviously not," Namjoon sneers, "I don't do deals these days. But he doesn't need to know that."
"So, you're going to request to meet with him and hope he takes your deal that is not a deal?" Luna cocks her eyebrow, "That sounds dumb,"
"No," Namjoon sits down beside her again, a secretive look in his eyes, "I will organise to meet while one of my best takes out his men, then kill him,"
"Best?" She frowns, "Jimin?"
"No," He winks, "I think you know what I am asking, Luna,"
She glares at him, folding her arms defensively.
"I am a detective, Kim Namjoon," Luna mutters, "Faith is dead. Never ask me that again,"
"Okay, I'm sorry," He smiles, "I guess I could ask Jimin to take your place,"
"Let me talk to Yoongi," Luna says firmly, "If he has nothing tomorrow, I'll bring the police along to your meet up and he will be arrested right there,"
Luna is expecting him to get angry at the mention of using the police. But instead, he nods in agreement, completely comfortable with the idea.
"Sounds like a plan," Namjoon grins, "I like that,"
"Really?" Luna scoffs, "You're fine with police coming?"
"I can deal with police, that's easy enough," He shrugs, "As long as Seokjin is taken down, I don't mind,"
"Okay..." Luna sighs, "Well, I want to go visit Jimin now... do you have a place to stay?"
"Yeah, I'm good," Namjoon grins, standing up and heading to the door, "Call me tomorrow night, okay?"
"Okay," Luna smiles, opening the door for him, "Thanks for everything..."
"It's fine," He beams, patting her shoulder softly, "Anything for my little sister,"
She rolls her eyes, gives him one final wave, and closes the door, feeling a lot more hopeful.
. . . . .
Luna looks up at the apartment complex fondly. All the nostalgia and happiness Namjoon had earlier has really rubbed off on her. She remembers all the times she spent here. She spent two years living here; her first year at university, and the first year at the police academy. All the time she has spent drinking with them, playing karaoke, playing video games and board games, and the number of dramas she watched with them. It's so nostalgic.
She enters the complex, a bag of alcohol in her hand. She texted Jimin and Hoseok earlier, but neither of them responded. She knows they aren't working tonight unless Hoseok received a last-minute job. Hopefully, if they are sleeping, they'll wake up and drink with her.
Sure, it's late at night and she has work tomorrow, but she needs some happiness in these times. They always know how to brighten her day. Well, evening technically.
She takes the elevator up to their floor and moves towards the apartment. The hallway is always gloomy and creepy at night, reminding her of a cheap horror movie. Spooky.
Maybe they'll want to watch a horror movie tonight? She is in the mood for it.
She types the pin into the mechanical pin pad and opens the door. Weirdly enough, the lights are still on in the living room. She can see the light peeking into the little hallway that leads to where she is standing in the foyer. She slides on her slippers and moves down the hallway.
"Hey, guys, what are you..." Luna starts before her gaze rests on the scene in front of her. Her eyes slowly widen, the realisation taking a moment to hit her.
The lounge room is trashed, completely destroyed with a splatter of blood covering most of the surfaces. From plain simple furniture to an artist's painting room. But this isn't the sort of art someone wants to walk in on.
There is a streak of blood leading from the middle of the living room to the empty space next to the dining room. Right to a body.
Jimin's body.
She moves further, her eyes travelling over him. He is beyond mutilated, his legs splintered, his arm twisted unnaturally across his body, and the bullet holes. But the most gut-wrenching sight is his eyes. The emptiness of his soulless eyes as they stare at her, wide and dark like a hollow abyss.
A dead man's eyes.
"Hello, Faith,"
She begins to realise there is a boot resting on the side of his head. Her eyes travel up the leg attached to the boot, resting on the face of the one person she was not expecting. Never in a million years would he look at her like that. Her sunshine, her happiness.
Jung Hoseok.
"H..." Luna breathes, "Hobi...?"
"Catching up, are we?" He grins, "You took your time... you texted us hours ago,"
He pushes down with his boot, his gun hanging limply from his blood-stained hands. Jimin's head moves slightly, but he doesn't react. He will never react ever again.
Because he's dead.
"What... what are you doing?" She mutters softly. This isn't Hoseok. It can't be. He wouldn't hurt Jimin. Jimin is his closest friend, his boulder, his rock.
Was. Jimin was his closest friend. Now he's dead.
He can't be dead.
Luna has seen many bodies in her life; she has been responsible for most of the bodies she has seen. But this isn't real. Everything is too sharp and painful. Her chest is caving in, threatening to implode on her. She can't breathe.
Jimin is dead.
"Well, this is exciting," Hoseok laughs darkly, "I never thought I'd be able to bring the infamous Faith to her knees,"
Her old name rings in her ears, like the ominous bell of death. Alerting her, reminding her. She's in danger.
Jimin is dead.
She uses every ounce of her mental resilience to force her bubbling, squirming grief into a tightly locked box. She will grieve him, but she needs to focus.
He's not dead. He's not dead. He's fine.
Her expression shifts, her muscle memory coming to her aid.
"What have you done?" Luna asks firmly, finally making eye contact with him. His eyes look as dead as Jimin's, deep-seated darkness swirling behind them. It's as if the sun has been swallowed by a black hole, taking its place as the centre of the solar system.
"The Eye sends his regards," Hoseok smirks, "And a warning,"
"Warning? This is a warning?" She demands, her voice high and shrill, "Why... I don't understand..."
"I guess I should probably fill in the blanks with my own little story," Hoseok sighs, putting weight onto his boot again. Luna cringes, keeping her eyes firmly on Hoseok and not Jimin's mangled corpse.
"How long?" Luna demands.
"7 years," Hoseok sneers, "7 years of painfully listening to this kid whine and winge. 7 years of watching and waiting... and finally..." He takes his boot off of Jimin, only to kick his back so he rolls onto his stomach.
Luna clenches her jaw, her hands trembling as her legs shake.
"7 years?" She frowns, "So... before you even came here?"
"Yep," Hoseok says casually, "My customers listened to me... all of them listened to me... want to know why?"
"Why?" She mutters, her brain working overtime in the background of her focus. She needs to make a plan, now.
"Because I was their boss," Hoseok chuckles, "The Eye's followers were told to sit silently and wait, so they did. I didn't have to force them not to use my weapons, they just did as they were told." He smirks, "Jimin was starting to get suspicious, especially after I mentioned that homicide last weekend. But I held him back... until The Eye gave me the clear to take him out,"
"Why was he suspicious?" Luna frowns. Hoseok killing people isn't new, so how could that be a problem?
"You don't know?" Hoseok grins, "The Reapers should change their name to The Angels now with the work they do. They've become vigilantes. Sure, they're violent, murderous, criminal vigilantes, but they don't just kill like they used to,"
"So... that showed him that you weren't following RM,"
"Exactly," Hoseok nods, "Now, before you can even try to come up with a plan, let's end this discussion, shall we?"
"You piece of fucking..." Luna steps forward but stops as Hoseok lifts his arm swiftly, his gun trained on her.
"Now, now," Hoseok tsks, "Let me leave, or I'll fill you with bullets,"
"I don't think your boss would like that," Luna mutters dryly, glowering at him as he starts slowly moving away from Jimin.
"No," He shrugs, "But do you really want to take that risk with me?"
She considers this for a moment. She is no help dead, but she doesn't want to let him leave.
Later... I'll get revenge later.
Slowly, they circle each other, Hoseok keeping his gun pointed at her. They move in unison so that she is next to Jimin's body and his back is to the front door. He picks up a duffle back, his eyes stuck firmly to her. He backs away, moving towards the hallway. Once he is in the hallway, he smiles.
"The Eye sends his condolences and hopes you take him seriously now," Hoseok sneers.
Suddenly, he spins and sprints from the apartment. Luna rushes after him, wrenching open the apartment door to follow him out. But he's gone.
She re-enters the apartment, shuffling towards Jimin. Once she reaches him, she stumbles to her knees, gently sliding him onto his back before resting his head on her lap.
Her grief comes billowing out of her subconscious like a poisonous smog, collapsing her lungs. Her breathing becomes shallow, the tears falling faster than ever before. She has never felt a pain like this in her life.
"Jimin?" She sobs, shaking him lightly, "Jimin?"
His head lolls from side to side, his eyes looking past her, absolutely nothing behind them.
He's dead.
Jimin is dead.
She whimpers, the pain and grief engulfing her as she pulls him into her chest, begging him to open his eyes.
But he doesn't.
She screams.
(A/N) Listen, I know it's messed up to make this the last chapter for the week, but I swear it was unintentional 😅
I want to add that I have been kicked out of my house recently. I have a place to stay now so hopefully my chapter updates won't get interrupted.
See ya Monday 🫰🫰🫰
