Chapter 5: Don't Underestimate Me

Rachel and Sarah ran towards the door because of the rain and Sarah unlocked it. Once they got inside, James was sitting on the couch and says "Girls, you came home early again?" Sarah says "Dad, you know about our schedule at school. Once lunch is over, we go home." James says "Oh, yes. That's right. I'm sorry, children. My brain is a little fried from work today and speaking of fried, we're having cheeseburgers with onion rings for dinner." Sarah says "That sounds delicious and I can't wait." James says "When does Christian come home?" Sarah says "He should be coming home right now." James says "Okay. You go on upstairs and find something to do. If you need me, I'll be downstairs." Sarah says "Okay, dad. Let's go into your room, Rachel." Rachel says "Alright." They both went into Rachel's room and then Rachel closed the door.

Sarah sat on her bed and says "Okay. Show me what you were talking about in the bathroom." Rachel puts her bookbag on the bed and took out the books that she found at the library, but to Sarah it looked like she has only one book in her hands. Rachel says "These two books are magical and this purple one explains what I saw last night." Sarah says "The shadow monsters?" Rachel says "They're called the Dark Parademons and they feed on victims who only show fear and the diary that I mentioned before shows me flashbacks of how Jasper Balthasar encountered them for the first time." Sarah says "Yet I only see one book and that's the graphic novel. I didn't see a diary when you went through your backpack." Rachel says "Still don't believe me?" Sarah shrugged and says "I mean, I am trying very hard to believe in it. I just can't..." Rachel says "See it? I understand. I guess that I'm the only one who can see it, but I still don't know how." Sarah says "Maybe you can ask that magical diary of yours?" Rachel says "That doesn't sound like a bad idea." Suddenly, the lights start to flicker and Sarah saw the lamp and says "Okay, that's weird." Rachel says "You saw that?" Sarah says "Yeah, it must've been the circuit breaker." Rachel says "Or a Dark Parademon." Sarah was nervous until she heard the front door close and Christian and Deborah walked in saying "Hey, kids! Mom is home!" Sarah and Rachel went downstairs and Sarah says "Hey, mom!" Deborah says "Hello, children. Did you have fun at school today and was it better than yesterday?" Sarah says "Oh, it was better than yesterday." Deborah says "That's good. I'm glad. I better start making these burgers because I know everyone is hungry." Christian says "Oh, yes. I would die to have a burger right now." Rachel says "Why would you say that? That was a horrible thing to say." Christian says "Hey, do me a favor and stay out of my conversation, weirdo." Sarah says "How about you do us a favor and wash those dirty hands of yours?" Christian says "How about no?" Deborah says "Christian....go wash your hands." Christian says "Yes, mom." Sarah crossed her arms while smirking. Christian went to Rachel and says "I will get you tomorrow at school, Rachel. Just you wait. There's a storm coming." He went upstairs and went into the bathroom.

James got up off the couch and kissed Deborah. Deborah smiled and says "How was work, dear?" James says "Work was fine and yours?" Deborah says "It was good. Just can't wait to eat once I'm done making it." James says "I know, right? I better wash my hands as well." He went upstairs to wash his hands and Rachel says "Hey, mom. Do you think that I'm a freak?" Deborah says "What? No, no. Why on earth would you think of something like that?" Rachel says "Because Christian says so." Deborah says "Darling. You are not a freak. You are a unique, beautiful little girl and you have so much potential." Rachel says "You're right." Deborah says "Of course I am. Now, wash up for dinner and it shouldn't be long before they're ready." Rachel says "Okay." Rachel went upstairs and saw the raven peering through the bathroom window. Rachel ignores it, but the raven cawed so loud that it slightly cracked the glass. Rachel covered her ears and looked at the glass. Rachel gasped and says "Listen, you little bird from Hell. If my family sees this, I'll be in trouble. So, fly away to wherever you came from and stay away from me! Do you hear me? Begone!" Rachel heard a knock on the door as the raven flew away from the window and Rachel says "Yes?" Sarah says "Hey, are you almost done in there?" Rachel says "Yes, just about. I'm coming out now." Sarah says "Okay." Rachel washed her hands and opened the door. Sarah says "Are you okay?" Rachel says "Yes, I'm fine. It was just the hunger talking." Sarah says "You sure?" Rachel says "Never better." Rachel went downstairs and Sarah went into the bathroom to wash her hands as well and she saw the broken window and used the broom to clean it up. Deborah then says "James, everyone! The dinner is ready!" James says "I'm coming, dear!" He came downstairs while Deborah was putting the food on the table. Deborah says "Dinner is served. Let's eat." The family said their prayers and began to eat their food. Hours later, Rachel says "That was really good." Sarah says "Yes, it was." Christian says "I'm going to sleep. Bye, losers." Christian went upstairs to his room and closed the door. Deborah says "And you two should get to sleep as well. You both have school tomorrow and tomorrow will be Friday." Sarah says "Yes, I love Fridays!" Rachel says "What's so special about Friday?" Sarah says "Friday is a great day to celebrate because after that is the weekend and we don't have to go to school on the weekend. So, that's why we need to go to sleep now." Rachel says "Okay. Let's go." They both went into their rooms and Rachel closed her door, then she changed into her pajamas.

She laid down on the bed and begins to fall asleep by closing her eyes. The raven came at the window and tapped it with its beak. Rachel was still asleep as more ravens appeared near the windowsill and the one raven that was following Rachel started cawing first and then the other ravens followed. Again and again, the ravens cawed at the window and the more they did it, it began to echo and a black swirling substance like darkness surrounded Rachel and it seeped through her entire nimble body. After the darkness went through her, the ravens were gone and the next morning came rolling around. Rachel woke up in alarm and looked outside and didn't see the raven. Rachel sighed with relief and says "Finally, that raven is gone." She gets up and got in the tub. She washed herself and got dressed in her clothes along with the cloak wrapped around her. She went downstairs and didn't see anyone at the kitchen or anywhere else. Rachel says "Hello?" Then she looked at the time and says "Oh, no! I'm late!" Rachel ran out the door and closed it. She kept running down the sidewalk and saw the school in plain view. She ran inside and got into class. Ms. Brookstone got interrupted when Rachel bursted through the door. Ms. Brookstone says "Rachel, I see you made into my class late." Rachel says "Yes, but I'm sorry. I thought I woke up on time. It won't happen again." Ms. Brookstone says "Alright, Rachel. You're off the hook, but if you be late again, I'm taking a star away. Got it?" Rachel nodded and a student passed a piece of paper to Rachel.

Rachel took out her pencil and begins to copy the numbers down. Sarah says "Hey, Rachel. You finally came to school." Rachel says "Sarah, why didn't you wake me up this morning?" Sarah says "I didn't want to bother you while you were sleeping, so I just let you continue." Rachel says "Where was mom and dad?" Sarah says "They went to work early and they didn't have time to make us breakfast. You can have my sausage biscuit from the school cafeteria. I saved it for you in case you were hungry." Rachel says "Well, I am hungry. Pass it over." Sarah says "You got it." As she passed it over to Rachel's desk. Rachel grabbed the biscuit, unwrapped it and took a bite. About five minutes later, the bell started ringing for recess and Ms. Brookstone says "Alright, children. It's time for recess, but we're only going out for ten minutes because it looks like it's going to rain. Go on and have fun. When I blow the whistle, everyone get back inside."

The kids ran out the door, except Rachel who was still eating the sausage biscuit. Christian knocked it from her hands and Rachel says "Hey! I was eating that!" Christian says "Not anymore." The bullies gathered around her once again. Rachel says "Back off." One girl says "You're not the boss of us. We're the boss of you!" The boys pushed her down to the ground and Rachel grunts. Sarah saw the group and says "Hey, leave her alone!" A boy says "Shut up, smart mouth!" Christian says "What's the matter, Rachel? You're too gentle and shy to fight back?" The same raven came flying towards the swings and landed on top cawing. Another girl says "She's a freak and goth girl! She will never fit into this school." Another boy says "She's really slow and nobody wants her around because she's ugly inside and out." Christian says "And she thinks that monsters are real, but they're just in her imagination, stupid girl. She's nothing, but dirty witch." The raven keeps cawing louder and louder. Suddenly, Rachel's eyes closed tightly as she opened them and her eyes turned blood red. She stood up as her cloak started flying upwards and she says in a demonic voice. "I SAID BACK OFFFFF!!" The bullies were scared and they ran back into the school yelling with terror. She stared at Christian and says "You...are a terrible brother and you need to be punished!" Christian says "NO!" Christian was scared as he back away against the fence. Rachel moved the swings violently and grinned menacingly while the chains broke off the swings and it hits Christian in the arm very hard that it broke. Christian yelled in pain and fell to his knees. "Stop! Please, no more!" Sarah says "Rachel, stop!" She ran and grabbed her shoulder. Rachel snapped out of it and her eyes turned to normal. Rachel says "Sarah?" Sarah says "You were doing too much." Rachel says "What?" She looked at Christian and he says "S-Stop it, please." He started crying and says "I'm sorry." Rachel says "Christian, are you okay?" Christian says "You broke my arm and you tried to kill me!" Rachel says "But..." Christian says "You're a demon!" Sarah says "Come on, Rachel. We'll explain to the teacher what happened." Rachel shook her head and begins to run back into the school. Sarah says "Rachel!" Ms. Brookstone stops Rachel and says "Rachel, what on earth is the matter?" Rachel went around the teacher and ran to the bathroom and closed the stall. Rachel was panting and saw the raven up top. She realized that it was the raven who did something last night. Rachel says "It was you, you good for nothing, bird! You gave me these horrible powers! I hate you! Do you hear me? I hate you for entering into my life and always following me all the time! I'm through you, you stupid bird! THROUGH!" In her head, negative things that the bullies said to her before was spiraling through her mind like a full circle. They started to echo and she was losing her mind. She started to cry while screaming and kicking the stall. The darkness within her started breaking the glass in the bathroom and the upper windows. Rachel then puts her knees to her chest and started crying softly into her arms while rocking back and forth next to the toilet. Hours later, Deborah entered the bathroom and says "Rachel?" Rachel heard Deborah calling her name and she slowly got onto the toilet lid while still crouching. Deborah says "Honey, I know you're in here and I heard what Sarah said. It's okay, darling. We know what you did was an accident." Rachel was hearing Deborah speaking while leaning her head against the stall wall. Deborah says "It wasn't your fault and I know you're afraid, but we can help you overcome your fears." Rachel says "No...you can't. I'm a monster." Deborah says "You're not a monster. You're our child and we love you. Now, come on out of there. Please?" Deborah puts her hand on the stall door where Rachel is. Rachel sighed and got down from the toilet. Rachel slowly opened the door and Deborah kneeled down with a worried smile on her face. Rachel ran to Deborah in her arms. Deborah says "I got you. It's okay, dear." Rachel hugged her tightly and says "I have to find out where I came from and why do I have these powers?" Deborah says "I think that is a great idea. There is a magic and voodoo store in downtown. I will take you there. Tonight. Would you like that?" Rachel says "Yes. Yes. I would." Deborah nodded and says "Okay." She smiled and Rachel says "Wait. Where's Christian and Sarah and Dad?" Deborah says "They're taking Christian to the doctor as we speak. He's going to be in the hospital for two weeks." Rachel says "Two weeks?" Deborah says "Means that it will take some time before that arm gets healed. Don't worry. We will check on him later to see how he is doing. Let's go." Rachel says "Okay." Rachel holds Deborah's hand as they exited the bathroom and the students were scared of Rachel while they went out of the school. Ms. Brookstone says "Alright, children. Time to go to lunch." The students slowly walked to lunch and the teacher was worried for Rachel and conitued doing what she was doing.
