The Shadow Labyrinth: Shadows

🌘 The Brush of Shadows

The labyrinth was quieter than usual. No rustle of goblins, no tricks at the edge of her vision—just a silence so thick it pressed against her ears. Eva slowed her steps, lantern swinging low, her breath shallow.

Something was watching.

She couldn’t see it, couldn’t name it, but her skin prickled, her pulse racing. Every shadow seemed to lean closer, every breath of wind whispered her name.

“Eva…”

The sound was barely there, less than a whisper, but it shivered down her spine. She spun, holding the lantern high. Nothing. Only hedges, only dark.

Her fingers tightened around the handle. “I know you’re there,” she said into the silence. Her voice was steady, though her heart thundered. “You think I don’t feel it, but I do. You’ve been watching me since this began.”

High above, Jareth stood cloaked in shadow, unseen, the words striking him like a blade.

Eva turned slowly in place, defiant eyes sweeping the empty air. “If you mean to frighten me, you’ll be disappointed. I’m not afraid of you.”

At that, the shadows stirred, wrapping briefly around her shoulders like a caress. Warmth flickered through her chest—a heartbeat not her own, brushing against hers. Her breath caught.

Then, as quickly as it came, it vanished.

Eva gasped softly, her knees trembling. She pressed her hand to her chest, whispering, “What do you want from me?”

High in the dark, Jareth’s lips parted. The truth almost slipped out. Everything.

But he said nothing.

Instead, the shadows peeled away, leaving her alone once more. And though she did not see him, she felt him long after the silence returned—the weight of his gaze, the heat of a presence too close to be denied.

Eva forced herself to move on, her lantern swaying as she pressed deeper into the labyrinth. Yet even as her steps grew steadier, she whispered to herself, half in fear, half in wonder:

“…I’m not afraid of you.”

Above her, hidden in the dark, the Shadow King smiled.
