10.
Aunt Chris paces back and forth, Lauren can't get a flight out here until tomorrow and the storm isn't helping things. The winds are picking up and the girls are frightened. She hasn't heard from Derek and the officers searching for Ava. She's starting to worry about Derek being out there in this crazy mess of a storm. The weather channel had predicted they could possibly spawn tornadoes, and even though Chris has shelter in her basement she's more worried than ever.
The smoke alarm beeps and aunt Chris quickly runs to the kitchen. She had left Kate in charge of the grilled cheese. She's made them before, and knew she was capable.
"Sorry," Kate says, waving her hand over the steam rising from the burning sandwich.
Kate already shut off the stove, and aunt Chris starts fanning the beeping alarm. Sophie sits at the table coloring. She looks up at the mess her sister has created and rolls her eyes.
"Good thing I like things burnt," she says.
"Shut up!" Kate shouts.
"Kate!" aunt Chris yells.
"Sorry," she mumbles, putting her head down.
"It's okay, just don't use that word. Okay?"
Kate nods.
"Hey, we're going to find your sister, okay? She's going to be okay."
The smoke alarm shuts off and aunt Chris plops herself down at the table. Kate slides a plate of burnt grilled cheese to her sister and places the other sandwich in front of her. She sighs, Kate hates burnt foods. She tries picking the black edges off, but it still tastes gross.
"Any word?" Kate asks, licking her slimy cheese fingers.
"Nothing yet. I can't even get in touch with Derek," she sighs.
"I hope he's okay. Maybe they found each other and are hiding from the storm," Kate shrugs.
"Maybe," aunt Chris smiles.
As Kate is about to take a huge bite of her sandwich a wailing siren goes off in the distance. Kate and Sophie have never heard that siren before, they look to aunt Chris. Her face pales with fear and she stands, knocking the chair down behind her.
"What is it?" Sophie asks.
"Tornado siren. Quick," she says. "Let's get to the basement."
Aunt Chris nudges them towards the basement, but quickly checks to make sure the stove has been turned off. In the distance through the window she sees an ominous grayish-green cloud looming over the field across the way. She rushes down with the girls. Once downstairs she grabs the blankets and ushers them into the small closet that is the safest place in the house. Outside the wind howls and the siren groans.
Sophie starts crying. Aunt Chris takes her in her arms and rubs her back.
"Where will Derek and Ava go to hide from the tornado?"
"I'm sure they found somewhere to go."
Even as she says it, aunt Chris knows that they may not be safe. That worries her the most. The wind grows even louder and everything around them starts to shake. It's not aunt Chris's first time in this situation, she's been through many tornadoes. They usually don't scare her, but knowing that she's got two people she loves very much out there in this storm causes panic inside. She's trying her hardest to hold it together for the girls. She knows that's what she has to do.
It takes a very long time for the wind to die down and for aunt Chris to feel safe enough to go upstairs and inspect the damage. Sophie fell asleep in her arms, while Kate stayed awake. Kate could sense aunt Chris's fear. While they waited it out she and aunt Chris played a game called I'm going on a picnic. It kept both of them calm from the heavy winds outside.
Kate sits in the quiet basement with her sleeping sister waiting for aunt Chris to give her the okay.
Aunt Chris is relieved to find her house, the inside at least unharmed. Outside might be a different story. She carefully opens the door, her yard is full of debris. Lawn chairs, and tools from her shed lay strewn on the ground. She then goes around back and the moment she does she drops to get knees. The tornado just missed her house only to destroy the woods, the same woods both her niece and boyfriend are stranded in.
