Chapter 4

As Avneet stood there, drenched and embarrassed in the guest room, her mind raced with thoughts of what Siddharth might be thinking of her. She felt like a complete mess, and the idea of him perceiving her as some sort of "psycho" for standing in the rain without an extra pair of clothes only intensified her discomfort.

For a moment, she wished she could dig a hole in the ground and bury herself there, escaping from this awkward situation. Her gaze darted toward the balcony, contemplating an impulsive dash for freedom, but she quickly dismissed the notion. The balcony wasn't too high, but it wasn't an option.

Then came the gentle yet persistent knock on the door, echoing through the room. Avneet's heart skipped a beat. He was still knocking. She hesitated for a moment, but curiosity got the better of her. She approached the door and cautiously opened it.

There he stood, Siddharth, with a set of clothing draped over his arm and a warm, understanding grin on his face. Instead of questioning her about why she was soaked, he offered her his mother's clothes. His thoughtfulness took her by surprise.

"Go change, I'll reheat the dinner," he said casually as he walked away, leaving Avneet feeling deeply appreciative of his kindness.

She quickly seized the opportunity, rushing to the bathroom to take a soothing shower. The warm water washed away not just the physical discomfort but also some of the emotional turmoil that had gripped her. After the shower, she gingerly donned the outfit Siddharth had provided. It was a tad loose but comfortable.

Emerging from the guest room and feeling refreshed, Avneet headed to the kitchen. Siddharth was busy reheating the dinner, and the aroma of the food filled the air. She approached him with a smile, her gratitude evident.

"Thank you," she said, her voice soft but sincere.

Siddharth turned to her with a warm smile of his own. "You're welcome. I hope you're feeling better now."

The evening had taken an unexpected turn, Avneet couldn't help but feel a sense of connection with this stranger who had shown her kindness when she needed it most. The rain outside had brought turmoil into her life, but perhaps it had also brought a glimmer of hope and compassion through Siddharth.

Siddharth's kitchen adventure had taken a comical turn. As he attempted to retrieve the hot tray from the oven, he quickly realized that handling it without oven mitts was a recipe for disaster. His culinary skills were clearly questionable, and Avneet couldn't help but suppress a laugh at the sight of him.

"Should I help?" she offered, trying to hold back her amusement, but her twinkling eyes betrayed her mirth.

Siddharth, a hint of frustration evident on his face, frowned at her. "Thank you, but no," he responded, determined to find a solution to his oven mitt predicament.

Avneet watched as he rummaged through the kitchen drawers, searching for oven mitts while she stood by. She couldn't help but admire the persistence he displayed despite his clear kitchen struggles.

However, her patience didn't last long, especially when she caught a glimpse of the tray's contents as he had momentarily left it in the middle of the oven. Her mouth watered at the sight of mac and cheese—a creamy delight filled with corn, jalapenos, and an abundance of cheese. It was precisely the way she loved it.

Unable to resist the temptation, Avneet decided to take matters into her own hands. She walked over to the towel hanging on a nearby hook, carefully removed the tray from the oven, and placed it on the counter.

Just as she was about to serve herself, Siddharth's voice interrupted her, his tone annoyed. "Let me serve," he insisted, holding oven mitts in his hands, leaning on the counter.

Avneet turned to face him, and she couldn't help but giggle at the exasperated look on his face. It seemed that he couldn't do anything right in front of her, from offering her a drink to handling dinner, but she knew it wasn't his fault. He had mentioned that his maid rarely took a day off, and he wasn't accustomed to preparing meals. Eating out had been his usual routine.

But then Siddharth glanced at her, and instead of being annoyed, he noticed her soft laughter and twinkling eyes. In that moment, he realized that maybe, just maybe, his kitchen mishaps weren't all bad. He had made her laugh, and that felt like a small victory in itself.

With a playful grin, Siddharth decided to embrace the situation. "Well, maybe I can make you laugh more often," he quipped, earning a genuine smile from Avneet. The tension from earlier seemed to dissipate, replaced by a newfound camaraderie as they shared a hearty laugh in the cozy kitchen, the aroma of mac and cheese lingering in the air.

As they sat at the dining table, sharing a meal and engaging in heartfelt conversation, Siddharth and Avneet discovered unexpected connections and shared experiences that seemed to bridge the gap between them.

As they continued their conversation, the night seemed to envelop them, creating a sense of intimacy despite being strangers.

She gazed out of the window at the city lights, and he couldn't help but ask, "So, what do you love most about the city?"

She turned to him with a thoughtful expression. "The diversity, I suppose. It's a melting pot of cultures, and you can find the most incredible food from all over the world right here."

He nodded in agreement. "That's true. I've always believed that a city's food scene is a reflection of its soul. Speaking of which, have you tried the street food around here? It's amazing."

She laughed, her eyes sparkling. "I haven't yet, but I'm definitely up for some culinary adventures. Any recommendations?"

He started listing off his favorite local eateries and food stalls, their conversation effortlessly flowing from one topic to another. It felt like they had known each other for much longer than just this evening.

As the night wore on, they shared stories of their childhood, dreams, and aspirations. She learned about his journey to the city and the challenges he had overcome, while he discovered more about her determination to follow in her father's footsteps and make a name for herself.

Finally, he couldn't help but say, "You know, meeting you tonight feels like destiny. Maybe it's a sign that great things are in store for both of us."

She smiled warmly, appreciating the sentiment. "I believe in destiny too, and who knows what the future holds? Perhaps our paths crossed tonight for a reason."

The moonlight cast a romantic glow on their faces as they continued to talk, two souls connecting in the heart of the bustling city, finding solace in each other's company, if only for this one magical night.

Siddharth talked animatedly about his job as a software engineer, his passion for technology, and his dream of one day opening his own software development firm. He spoke fondly of how Avneet's father, despite being her father, had motivated him and had become a source of inspiration in his career.

Avneet, on the other hand, opened up about her love for singing. She revealed that she had never really set big goals for her life and had recently decided to take over her father's business. Siddharth listened attentively, genuinely interested in her story, and he couldn't help but compliment her voice, mentioning that he had heard her singing before.

As the hours passed, they found themselves talking about a wide range of topics, sharing anecdotes, and even discussing their favorite books and movies. It was a remarkable experience, the way two strangers could connect on such a deep level, as if they had known each other for much longer.

Their conversation flowed effortlessly, and they could have continued talking through the night if it hadn't been for Siddharth's phone that suddenly rang, interrupting the magical moment they were sharing.

Avneet gracefully excused herself, citing the late hour and the need for rest. Siddharth sighed in frustration, feeling the interruption had come at the worst possible time. He picked up his phone and answered the call, knowing it was from his best friend, but he couldn't help but curse his friend silently for spoiling what had been a wonderful evening with...

Wait a minute. He realized, to his chagrin, that in the midst of their engaging conversation, he had forgotten to ask her name once again. He muttered to himself, "I can't believe I forgot to ask her name!"

Siddharth's decision to ignore Vishal's call was a small act of irritation, a bit of payback for the untimely interruption. He retreated to his room, intending to finally call it a night after the wonderful yet puzzling evening he had with Avneet.

As he settled on his bed, preparing to let sleep take over, his phone suddenly rang again. This time, the caller was Jessica, his neighbor from the upper floor. Worried about her frantic tone, he quickly answered the call.

Before Siddharth could even speak, Jessica's voice came through the phone with a mixture of anger and desperation. "Tell your fucking friend to leave my house or I'll murder him!"

Siddharth's heart raced as he tried to make sense of the situation. Vishal at Jessica's house? What on earth was going on? He knew Vishal had a penchant for getting into trouble, but this seemed like a whole new level of chaos.

Frantic and concerned, Siddharth tried to calm Jessica down and get more information about what had transpired. "Jessica, I'm on my way. Just hold on. I'll sort this out," he assured her.

He hung up, his mind racing as he hastily got dressed and grabbed his car keys. With a sense of urgency, he made his way out of his apartment and headed to Jessica's, wondering how on earth Vishal had managed to create such a commotion and what awaited him at Jessica's house.
