Chapter 5
For those of you reading Broken or have read parts of Broken first, I decided to put Rain's part of the story on hold in Broken for sake of spoilers. If I feel like something may be spoiler to those who are not caught up I'll specify, either in this book or in Broken. There's no particular order in reading the Broken series, however this is a background story for Rain. If you care about spoilers or the timeline of the story Stop reading Broken.
Thank you for reading! I love you all!

Friday nights are usually the nights everyone is looking forward to. It was the complete opposite of dreary Mondays. It was beginning of couple days of freedom and for some an escape from work. For me it was a time to face reality and sit in sadness with no distraction. I love my job and all its stressors simply because it gave me purpose. Being home, most of the time by myself, causes me to lose sight of it.
As I sit at my bay window, surrounded by books I've read a thousand times, the rain pattered against the pavement outside mimicking the beat of my heart. I sit here waiting for night to fall so I can have an excuse to sleep this pain away.
I hear soft footsteps coming my way so I turned around to see my husband walking in with his work boots in his hand. "Hey, how are you doing today?" He asked as he came over to me and gave me a kiss on the forehead.
"I'm alright, how was work?" I asked softly, getting up from my little nook of peace to follow him to our bedroom.
" Work was work." He placed his boots by the door of our bedroom before plopping down on the edge of the bed. " These long hours is doing a number on my joints. I have another overnight shift tomorrow."
" I will be glad when that freeway is finished, so these overnight shifts can stop. Y'all been working on the same freeway for years and doesn't seem like there's any progress to when you started." I complained. I went into our bathroom and began running his bath with Epsom salts to help his aching joints.
"That's the thing babe, not only are we expanding the freeway, we are building a whole new structure over water. It's more difficult than you think." He got up and began taking off his clothes.
" I didn't say it wasn't a hard job." I said barely above a whisper as I looked in the mirror. Subconsciously, I envisioned myself pregnant as I placed a hand over my bloated stomach. Bitterly, I wiped at the foggy mirror, knowing that would never be.
" Umm, my doctor called to give me a quote for a full hysterectomy and..."
" A hysterectomy?" He interrupted from the tub. The water splashed as he tried to look at me from where he was.
" yeah. A hysterectomy is..."
"I know what a hysterectomy is, Katherine" I sighed at the use of my government name. I go by Katy and always have. Besides, he knows I do not respond to anything other than baby, bae, or Katy.
" when we're you going to talk to me about this?" He asked. I turn to him folding my arms in front of me.
" I did talk to you about this Aaron. You must not have taken me seriously when I said I'd rather take out my uterus than to go through this again at the doctors office."
Aaron scoffed. " You call that talking to me about it? You were just angry, bae. Come on now, the doctor said there's treatment."
" Treatment we can't afford on a teachers salary and construction worker's salary ." I fussed as I shrugged my shoulders. " Hell, we can barely afford a hysterectomy if our insurance decides not to cover it."
I began to pace as I tried to keep my emotions at bay.
" I'll figure out the money..." Aaron starts but I immediately began to protest. " why not? The doctor said we have a chance on a baby. A baby that you want and you just want to throw the possibility of having one."
" I'm not throwing shit away. You damn right, I wanted a baby. I did. But you didn't have to labor a baby for days without being able to bring a baby home. I did! Not once, not twice, but three times. I'm still bleeding from the last time. Imagine having to walk around with the evidence of your failure leaking out of you" I cried, trying to get him to understand.
" my body doesn't even realize, I'm not pregnant anymore yet. I still wake up with morning sickness and go to bed at night with sore breasts."
" I didn't know" he says softly.
For some reason, I found it funny as a chuckle came from my lips. " you never asked."
I wondered why he was adamant on trying. When we first started talking about a family, he didn't want one. I thought I was okay with it until my 30th birthday. It was one of those epiphanies that hit me out of nowhere blinding my view of what I thought our relationship would be like. Eventually, Aaron got on board so we started trying right away and this was the result. Maybe I wasn't meant to be a mother.
As time went on the conversation ended and we went back to existing in our weekend reality. We did what we did best which was pretend like we weren't unhappy as we dove into the best distraction...sex.
Rain
I hate weekends.
Weekends meant there were no escape from his hands, his taunting words, the endless drunk guests and drunk actions.
On weekends there is no rest . I must stay awake to make sure Raiden is protected. Keep your head down. Don't say nothing. It's always yes sir, Yes mam. Whatever they want they get as I keep him safe.
Currently, Raiden and I are spending our Friday night in the bathroom, away from Uncle Tom and his rowdy friends.
I lightly hummed a made up tune as I rocked Raiden in my arms. He was having trouble sleeping with the loud commotion outside these quint four walls as we laid in the shower together. Rainfall could be heard outside adding to the loud noise.
" Rain!" I heard Uncle Tom drunkenly call for me. I immediately tense holding onto Raiden tightly as he held onto me.
" Rain! Come here girl."
I could hear his heavy footsteps coming towards the bathroom door. " Please not tonight." I whispered.
If I had to deal with him, i'd rather it be by himself, but when his friends are around I can't take it. He's a scary drunk but even scarier with friends. They were just as mean and sick as he was if not more. Uncle Tom had his rules when it came to her and others. He could be protective in a way but when money and alcohol is a factor, it's too hard to endure.
The jiggling of the door made me cry out as I placed Raiden beside me and covered him with blankets.
" Don't go Rainy." He cried as he tried to cling to me.
" I have to. It'll only make it worse." I confessed through my tears. I do this every time to protect him. He's all I care about in this world. I'd do anything for him and if that meant to go at there and entertain them, i'd do it.
" Rain, you better come out and I mean right now."
I closed the shower curtain to hide Raiden before I opened the door to a red faced Uncle Tom. He moved out the way to let me out. I closed the behind me before I walked out onto the living room with all there eyes on me. I looked at Uncle Tom not daring to move any further until he told me to.
That's how my weekends went. I only talk when I'm spoken to and when I do it's always yes sir.
Yes Sir.
Come here.
Yes Sir
Sit down.
Yes Sir.
Take off your Clothes.
Yes Sir.
Touch me
Yes Sir
Let me crush your spirit
Yes Sir.
I should die here but I live for him.
