Quiet Burdens

Chapter 3

Chapter Start!

Wood creaked, swayed in the waves, and Coles eyes drifted awake.

Light shined in his emerald swirled golden eyes, and a hand lifted to cover them, only to find he was on the cold wooden ground.

His eyes shot open, and he startled up, looking around quickly. Metal bars were formed around him, a small port whole was agents the wooden wall, and Cole swayed to the waves trying to get up to it.

When he climbed up to the whole, His eyes widened, all he could see was the blue green shade of the ocean crashing agents the side of the ship.

He stumbled back, falling on his butt "No... no no no..." he put his hands up to his head, covering his ears, and tucked his knees up to his chest.

He ended up sitting with his back to the wall, eyes glued shut.

The sun wavered, and he heard talking, the cell he was in was a dark dank hallway, three cells where in this area, Cole ended up in the far corner one.

The talking turned into screaming, and people ran around the deck above.

Cole's head shot up from his spot when the sound of someone coming down the steps echoed to his small cell. The voice was muffled, for when it came into the hall, it only mumbled, the voice was young, and Cole looked over to see who had come down to his unforgiving room.

The man who had rushed in held a sword in his hand, and another on his belt, he was searching the table near the stairs, the cell bars made it hard to see who was there.

He had a long blue coat, and his hair was pulled back in a ponytail.

"Come on..." he whispered, but stopped when his eyes laid upon a bag, his head shot to the bars of each cell, he looked in the first one, the ran to the next, finally ending up at the last cell.

"Cole?"

"Gil?"

Gil's eyes looked at him, but shot back to the steps, and ran over, he grabbed a pair of keys on the table, he turned and looked up the steps, "What's Taking So Long!?" a voice traveled down.

"I Found Out What This 'Special Cargo' Was!" Gil turned and started down the skinny hallway, unlocking Cole's cell.

"Come on" he waved, and the teen got up slowly, only for Gil to step into the cell, and grab his wrist, "Come On!" he dragged him out.

The boat swayed with the waves, Gil ran strait, but Cole swayed like a drunk. Gil grabbed the bag sitting on the table, and handed it to his friend, Cole noticed it was his, slipping it around his shoulder, he looked up.

"How did you find me?" the teen questioned, "Well for one" Gil pulled him up the steps, the other person looked at them, nodding to Gil, and the two started on the next floor, heading to the next flight of steps. "We got a letter from a spy on this ship"

They headed up the next set of steps.

"It said they had taken a 'Special Cargo' from the island of Crytinia, and we should go get it before heading to Harstar. We had no idea it was you" Gil laughed. "Yah thanks" Cole glared at the two as they ran.

The three met up with two others, then headed up to the top deck, Cole looked around, seeing the main mast had fallen over, and people were fighting, his eyes darted to the commotion.

"Come on" Gil ran over to the side of the ship, planks held the two ships together as the sea raged, and Cole gave his friend a look.

"Oh Don't Start With That!" his face reddened, but he turned quickly, and slashed at one of the other man's crew, the member fell to the ground, "Go!"

"Ga- FINE!" Cole climbed up on the wavy railing, then looked down to Gil, his eyes looked to the rest of the deck with fear mixed with anger. His ocean eyes burned with a light never seen by the friend.

A sight never wanted to be seen...

Cole turned to the skinny plank, he held his bag, and looked back to Gil, "G-Gil!" he said with a panicked voice.

Gil sighed, and glanced at his friend hard, but softened when he saw Cole, fear clearly illuminated his body, and Gil shook it off, then spat "If you fall in, I'll buy you a new sketch book"

"And paints?"

"And Paints! Now GO!" Gil basically screamed.

Cole nodded, and started his way across the plank, but a yell stopped him; "Get Out Of My Way Runt!" Cole turned to see the man from before staring Gil down.

"Not a chance" he smirked pulling a second blade from his side.

The large man laughed, "Do You Know Who I Am?! I Am Captain Trials! Right Hand Man Of Queen Scarlet Of Clyden!" His Burning eyes shined.

"And you my dear boy! Are In My Way!" Instead of using his sword, the Captain tried to kick Gil; And the teen turned out of the way, then held his blades up only to be counted by Captain Trials sword.

Cole watched, but the waves shaking the plank, he wavered, and started going across again. Gil fought the mammoth man, trading hits and blows, only for Gil to slam into the side of the boat.

With a swift hand movement, he grabbed the side of the boat's railing, and lifted himself up and stood on it, then went backwards on the plank behind. Cole Jumped off the other end, and was now on the other boat.

Gil stood on the skinny plank like a pro, and held one blade up with a cocky smile, toughing the bigger man to come a join him.

The Captain gritted his unkempt teeth, and climbed up, Gil stepped back for him to have room.

The waves crashed under the two, with the boats wavering, and the metal clashed, both swift on their feet, and stepping with easy, the other planks were filled with the crew of the SS Valor as they run back to their ship, leaving Gil to fight his own fight.

On the only plank left.

"Hey Cap" he finally spoke up, their blade talked for themselves until now, "What boy?" the Captain spat.

"Whoow! Don't Have To Be Mean" Gil laughed slightly, "I Just Wanted To Ask A Question!"

"Then Speak!" Captain Trials' anger flowed hard, he disliked a younger man who could fight, that wasn't in his crew.

"Can You Swim?" Gil's smirk became satanic, and he fell back to a cartwheeling off the plain, only to kick it to the side, making the wood, and Captain Trails himself, fall into the waves of the ocean underneath.

As Trails fell into the ocean below, his scream was of a girl.

"Raise The Anker's!" Someone yelled on the ship Cole now stood on. Gil turned with a smile, "Did You See His Face!" the young adult laughed. "And His Scream!" The two laughed, until a booming voice stopped them.

"Gil!" it yelled, the two turned quick, a large dark haired man walked up, his locks were pulled back in a ponytail, gray hairs sprawled everywhere.

"What Where You Thinking!?" he spat, but stopped when he noticed the blonde teen. "Cole?"

"Surprise! The 'Special Cargo' Was our little artist!" Gil made a jester to present the kid like a present.

"L-Little!?" Cole turned hard at his friend.

The man looked at them, and just boomed a laugh only a Half Dwarf-Half Elf could have. They stopped, and looked up to him.

"Well, welcome to the crew kid! If you don't remember its fine, But I'm Captain Walter Roland!" the man smirked.
