FIVE

When you wake up, you find you are tied with you hands behind your back, and your back to another person. You inspect your surroundings and see that you are in a tent, when suddenly a voice says, "So, you're finally awake. Captain! One of the captives is awake!"

A man in a red coat and tricorn hat walks into the tent and towards you. He glares down at you and says, "When I recommend taking captives, I was talking about someone of value, someone with secret information and a ransom. Of course, my men were fortunate and snagged useless rookies." You decide to keep your mouth shut, and he continues, "Well, if you have any information, please share. You should be proud to serve your king. However, I don't know how useful you'll be. Something isn't right..."

He pulls off your hat, letting your hair fall down and ruining your disguise. The captain pretends to be surprised. "How pitiful, the Yankees are so desperate that they allow a woman to join the army. Is their eyesight really that bad?" He shakes his head. "I would like to finish this thought with the warning that if you prove to be useless, we have no choice but to kill you. Anything you would like to share?" You keep your mouth shut, trying to think of a way out of this situation. After a few moments, he shakes his head and says, "Alright. You're most likely tired. I'll leave you alone for a bit, then we'll feed you, and then we'll see how much you like to talk." The captain waved the other soldier in the tent to follow him, and together they went outside.

You sat for a few hours, trying to brainstorm a way to escape when you hear coughing from behind you. You jump when you hear this, then remember that there's someone behind you. After a few moments of listening to this stranger's coughing, you cautiously ask, "...hello?" The person coughs for a few more seconds, they answer your question with, "Who's there?" "Well, if you are a Yankee we are on friendly terms. I believe that we are tied together." He coughs and tries to pull away from you, but obviously fails.

He continues or cough and suddenly you feel his hand. It's ice cold. You jump, a little startled, then feel nervous for the person behind you. Suppose they're really sick? It's not going to be easy to escape with a dead person tied to your back. "How are you feeling?" it was a stupid question, but you had to ask. He coughed and sourly replied, "Well, not too great." After a moment he said, "Sorry. I just don't feel too great." "No, no it's fine, I understand," you say, trying to help.

You lean down to wipe your sweaty forehead on the sleeve of your jacket when something cuts your cheek. "Ow!" you cry, and look down at your sleeve. Something sharp is poking out. You strategically move your arm to push the object out of your sleeve, revealing it's a knife. How did you not notice this before? You carefully bite onto the blade and pull it through the new hole in your jacket sleeve. You have it out and were about to grab it until the person tied to you coughs, jerking you to one side and causing the knife to fly out of your mouth and clatter across the floor.

You angrily growl and try to grab it with your feet, but your feet are tied to the floor. Maybe you can stretch across and get it with your hands? You shuffle closer to it, dragging the person with you until you stretch your arms behind you as far as they can go...and you feel the blade. Yes! You grip it tightly, which may have not been a good idea because now your hand is cut. Once you are in a spot where you can easily cut the ropes, you get to work on the ones binding you to the other prisoner. "I know it's hard for you," you say, "but could you please try not to cough? Or just try not to move?" He mutters an "ok" and you continue to slice the ropes. You pray that he won't move, because one jerk will cause one of you to get stabbed. Finally, you break through the ropes, and rub you aching wrists. Being tied up doesn't feel good.

You cut the ropes restraining you too the ground and start searching the tent. You find your hat and a pistol, which might help. There's a flask beneath the chair where the soldier sat before, and one sniff told you that whatever's in it is not water. You pocket it anyway and scan the room for more items. You find a compass, which will definitely come in handy, then crouch beside the boy and cut the ropes off of his ankles. You help him to his feet while he's coughing, and once again jump when you feel his ice cold hands. "Here," you put your coat on him, "you need this more than me. It's not that cold out." He looks at you hesitantly but you wave it off and say, "No wonder you're sick! You're clothes are soaking wet! What happened?"

"I don't r-remember," he said with his teeth chattering. You put the knife in your pocket and pull on his arm. "Come on, we have to go."
