Chapter 4

Elliot liked the fire pit. He wasn't sure why. He just liked it. He stood by the edge of it, looking around at all the people. 'Do I have to talk to all them?' He thought. He looked over at Mara, who was having no trouble socializing. She was talking the ears off some kid with pink hair, who looked liked they would rather be anywhere else at that moment. 'I might as well talk to someone.' He looked around, and shook his head. 'Yeah nope. No thanks.' "Hi!" Elliot jumped and spun around. "I'm Ignacio. They/them pronouns, thank you." They smiled at him, pushing brown hair behind their ears. "You are...?" Elliot gave them a nervous smile and stuttered. "I-I'm Elliot." "Don't be nervous, I don't bite. Your pronouns?" "Oh. Male ones, please." Ignacio clapped, as if Elliot had done something incredible. "There you go, that wasn't too hard, was it? I like your hair." They poked his bun, while Elliot swatted their hand away. "Well, thanks. I like your eyes?" Ignacio just stared for a second, like they were confused. "My eyes are just brown." They stated after a while. "Well....they're still nice."

A few very uncomfortable minuets later, the last stragglers and the counselors walked up. "Alright gang, let's get in a circle!" A counselor with green hair called. "We're going to introduce ourselves!" Elliot shuffled into place besides Ignacio and a very tall blonde person. The circle ended up looking more like a dented oval, but nobody wanted to waste any more time trying to make a perfect circle. "Alright, so how we're gonna do this, is like this." The green-haired one continued. "You'll say your name, preferred pronouns, and a fun fact about yourself. Be sure to speak up!" The tall guy looked about as uncomfortable as Elliot felt. 'I have to tell people about myself. End me now, please.' He thought. The green haired one spoke up again. "I'll start. My name's Jordan, I like any gender neutral pronouns, and I have ten pet snakes." A few people nodded, and the introductions continued around the circles. The other counselors were Brandon(male pronouns, hates emojis), Millie(female pronouns, once had a pet deer), Viktor(doesn't care about his pronouns, is blind in his right eye), Madison(female pronouns, doesn't like deep water), Marisa(they/them pronouns, is scared of snakes), and Ross(male pronouns, has a twin sister).  Then they moved on to the campers. The pinkette Mara was talking to earlier is a girl named Edilline who apparently has a fascination with memes. Elliot tuned out most of the introductions, as they were taking forever, only catching snippets of it. A tall red-head named Charlie who likes doing the laundry a lot. A little girl named Janise who plays violin. A short girl named Madeline who is nearly fluent in Swedish. Then, after what seemed five seconds, the tall person next to Elliot was introducing himself as Thompson who plays the tuba. And then Elliot had to go. "Hi, I'm Elliot, I-I prefer male pronouns please, and I'm an only child." He said quickly. The small burst of nerves drained out of him as Ignacio told the camp(rather loudly)that they've eaten a whole frog. He let a small smile stretch across his face as he thought of the near future. He already has two kinda-friends, he's surrounded by fairly-friendly people he probably won't have to ever talk to, and people will recognize him as a male. It seemed pretty cool.
