Chapter 17: Interrogation
The entire revision session had gone really well, as unusual as the studying technique was, Levi responded well to it and by the end of the hour he pretty much knew everything on the sheet. We then moved to the details of everything, the significance of what had happened, and then answering some exam questions. As the session went on, I was beginning to get increasingly worried about the amount of food I brought up, and I was pretty sure we would have done brilliantly if it weren't for the fact that I ran out of food. After the kisses had ran out, I reluctantly began giving him my Oreos, but soon those ran out. And when they did, he refused to do any work at all.
Why were boys so hard to get to?
I sat there for several moments, trying to figure out what to do, or what other teaching techniques I could use. It was fair to say that I want the greatest teacher, considering five minutes had gone by and I still had no idea what to do. "Juliette I'm bored!" Levi groaned after staring at me for a few minutes. Why he was staring at me, I had no idea. I was guessing he was waiting for me to come up with another method of studying.
"Levi it's been five minutes!" I laughed, although I literally had no idea what to do myself. It was cu-entertaining that he was a little bit impatient, and eager. It was a little bit strange that he wasn't like this anywhere else, but it was flattering that he tried extremely hard around me.
"But I'm bored!" He repeated. He was lying down on my bed, staring up at the ceiling, looking like he was so deep in thought. He seemed so concentrated, I didn't want to say anything and interrupt his thoughts. He suddenly sprang up, sitting up on my bed before speaking. "Let's play a game"
"You're such a child" I rolled my eyes, although I was more than amused. "What game?" I asked un-crossing my legs. I was pretty uncomfortable as I was sitting in my jeans and hoodie, usually I would come home and change into my pyjamas, but with Levi here, we just dove straight into the work.
He paused for a moment, once again deeply concentrated on god knows what before he decided on the game, although he was so hesitant in speaking I began wondering if I should worry over the result or not. "20 questions" he muttered so quietly it could've been mistaken as a whisper.
I think I recall flinching at his statement.
I wasn't so sure if I was ready to play 20 questions with Levi. Whilst, sure, at the first sound the game sounds fun and innocent. It really wasn't. It was a ploy people used to find out things about you, that you were less than willing to share. The thing about only being friends with Jordan and Eliza was that nobody would want to pry into my personal life, because they already knew what had happened.
It was strange that I only saw the positive things about Levi and I becoming close. I was only sure about the fact that Levi would not step carefully around me like both Jordan and Eliza did. He would ask me questions like 'did you take your pills?' If I were having am off day. He wouldn't find me not speaking in class remotely suspicious, he wouldn't count it as a sign as falling into depression.
But obviously it wasn't all perfect as I wanted it to be. He was eventually going to get curious, or already is, which in that case means he would eventually allow his curiosity to get the better of himself. He would want to know why I live with Eliza and aunt Jen, he probably already does. He would want to know where my parents are, what happened to them. Why I had a panic attack on the second day I met him. There were so many things that was left unanswered between Levi and I, and whilst he had been extremely gentle and patient, I knew that Levi wouldn't appreciate being left in the dark for too long. Maybe 20 questions is a way of him getting to know about things he doesn't.
Levi had sat there patiently as I zoned out, whether it was two minutes or ten minutes, I had no idea. But either way he stayed silent through all of it, allowing me to think it through. When I looked back at him he sent me a small smile, almost one of understanding. "Okay, 10 questions. 10 stupid, non deep, questions. And we can pass if we wanted to" he said, changing the rules of the game entirely.
I found myself smiling.
It was sweet of Levi to change the rules for me, what was even nicer was the fact that if I had to think about whether or not to play the game, it meant I had something to hide. And he obviously understood that there was a lot that I was hiding, but he didn't care. Well, either he didn't care or he respected me well enough to change the rules. I didn't know which one I preferred the sound of.
I slowly nodded, agreeing to the game. I knew that Levi wouldn't ask me deep questions, especially not after the rule change, and even after a few minutes of pondering what to ask him, I was stuck. "You go first" I offered.
"How old are you?" Was the question that he asked me. It was so sudden yet it sounded as if he were planning on asking me that through the entire time. It was such a simple question although somehow I found it hilarious.
I began laughing at the fact that he wanted to know my age so he decided on devising am entire game based on questions, only to have the first one ask my age. "you proposed a game of 20 questions just so you could ask my age?" I asked, voicing my thoughts as I grinned.
He raised an eyebrow "was that your question?" He asked, and despite seeming serious, I knew that he was teasing me.
I rolled my eyes, smiling slightly as I slapped his arm. "Of course not, you idiot" I scolded, and he began smiling once agin, staring at hand which had been on his wrist for three seconds. It was strange that I hadn't even realised that my hand was touching his wrist. But what was more strange was that I didn't feel any of the symptoms I usually would. I didn't feel my heart beat accelerating, or goosebumps running down my back, or feeling my head get light. It felt...normal. I'm seventeen years old" I answered quickly once I noticed the awkward atmosphere.
What I liked about Levi was that he was always able to change the atmosphere, from tense or comfortable, from awkward to amusing, he somehow managed to do it. And by liked I meant in the most platonic way. "Aw you're such a baby" He cooed once he found out my age, in the most patronising way possible.
"No I'm not." I denied childishly as I crossed my arms over my chest and pouted. "How old are you?" I asked curiously, raising my eyebrows. If we were in the same grade than our age difference wouldn't be that big.
"Was that your question?" He grinned, asking the same question once again. I knew by the grin that he was just trying to tease or amuse me, and if her were attempting to amuse me, he was doing a pretty good job of it.
I rolled my eyes again "yes. That was my question" I answered just for the sake of the fact that I had no idea what to ask him.
"So we're basically going to play a game of 'Levi asks 10 questions and Juliette asks them back'?" He asked me, raising an eyebrow and smirking slightly as I smiled innocently.
I stared at the wall for a few seconds, contemplating on whether that was how the game would go or not, but knowing me I would freeze when it came to asking questions, so yes it was likely that I ended up asking him the same questions he asked me "Probably" I finally said.
He chuckled, shaking his head slightly as if to say 'only you' but replying to me anyway "I'm 18 years old." He answered
"Hey I turn 18 in a few months!" I gasped quite dramatically considering he called me a baby
"I didn't notice" He replied sarcastically before stopping. "I spend too much time around you. Do you think your sarcasm is contagious?" He asked, almost seriously, as if he were really concerned about it.
I shrugged in response.
"But anyway" he continued "when do you turn 18?" He asked as he bit his lip slightly. I had no idea why, but I found the gesture extremely attractive.
"March 15th" I tore my eyes away from his lips and focused them on my hands which were interlocked in front of me. "I'll ask first this time!" I started, looking back up at Levi after a moment. I now knew what question to ask him. "Any hidden talents?"
He thought for a moment, scrunching his eyebrows once again in the most adorable way. "I used to play drums" He answered
I smiled slightly. "You did?"
"I mean, you hit things with a stick. Of course I do" He shrugged as I laughed
"Because that's a perfectly reasonable explanation" I replied sarcastically, smiling a little
"Wow you really can't go a day without sarcasm can you?" He smiled
I shook my head "I really can't"
He paused a minute, probably thinking about what to ask me, before he continued "What about you Miss Perfection, any hidden talents?" He asked
"I prefer book girl" I stated "and yes I used to sing" I answered
"You sing? Look how musically perfect we are for each other, we're basically soul mates. Marry me" he joked
"Sorry. I don't accept proposals from drummers, I believe singers and guitar players belong together." I sighed dramatically
"That, book girl, would be too cliché for me" He smirked
"Call me cliché" I shrugged
"I prefer book girl" He said "anyway, what are your plans for Christmas?" He asked.
I paused for a moment, racking my brains of what I would do during Christmas. "I actually forgot about Christmas to be honest"
"How can you forget about Christmas?" He asked in surprise.
I shrugged "I don't know, we're such as small family. It's never hard to shop for Eliza or aunt Jen, and then I always get something stupid for Jordan and that's it. We stay at home, watching Harry Potter movies and then we have a family dinner at the end"
"And that's all?"
I nodded "pretty much. What about you?"
"Go with my family to my grandmas house I guess" he shrugged.
"Seems amazing" I said "I wish I had a bigger family"
"Do you want to come?" He asked.
"What?"
"Yeah" he grinned. "It would be great! You could meet my sister Poppy and my other family members. You'll love it"
I smiled "I'd love to"
"Great"
"Okay my turn! Will you be my date to my cousin's wedding next month?" I asked as fast as I could.
I had lost the bet with Eliza and she had basically been pressuring me into asking Levi for the past two days. I said that I would ask him today, during or after our study session, and honestly this felt like the perfect time to do it.
Maybe I was wrong.
"What?" He asked, clearly amused
"Come on! I didn't say it that fast! You heard me" I whined
He smirked "I did. But I would love for you to repeat it for me"
"I don't like you" I muttered "Will you be my date to my cousin's wedding next month"
"Hm..." he began playfully thinking
"Please? The brides family is paying for everything, including our trip and hotel. And I'm gonna be in some deep shit if you don't come with me" I practically begged
"I'll come with you" He said, grinning out of amusement
"Your parents won't mind?" I asked
"I'm 18, they can't exactly say no" He answered
"Thank god! You're a life saver" I replied
"If"
I groaned "there's always an if"
"If you tell me, why you're suddenly asking me"
"Fine" I sighed "Last week, as you know, I was at the brides house. And you were texting me. And the girls stole my phone, found you hot. Asked if you were my boyfriend because you called me hot, and even though I said no. Eliza said yes. They believed Eliza. And now I'm forced to ask you to be my date"
"Wait" he said "they found me hot?" He questioned, smirking
"Get off your fucking high horse" I said, rolling my eyes
"That's no way to speak to someone, who's just done you a huge favour" He chimed
"I hate you"
"You clearly don't"
"Shut up Levi!" I groaned
"Wait, was the bet about you asking me?" He questioned
"Pretty much"
"Aw" he said patronisingly "you made a bet about me"
"anyway, if you weren't coming I would be the only bridesmaid without a date, so thank you"
"All jokes aside, I'd be glad to be your date" He said
"Thank you" I smiled "Do you have a suit?"
"I think so" He said thinking for a bit before talking again "Yeah" he nodded "I do"
"Okay, you're gonna need a black skinny tie" I said
"I probably have one" He said "anything else I need to know about this?"
I grinned sheepishly.
He sighed "what is it?"
"Let me take you through the entire day. This may take a while" I began
"Go on"
"Well our plane is at 10 on Friday night so you're gonna have to be over at 8" I began
"There's goes my peaceful weekend" He replied
"Tell me about it" I basically whined "anyway. I'm pretty sure the seating will be Eliza and Jordan, me and you and then aunt Jen"
"Jordan's coming?"
"Who else would be Eliza's date?" I asked
"Fair enough" he shrugged
"Anyway, we should get there around 4am. We'll head to the hotel, and we'll probably get there around 5. I'm guessing you and Jordan would share a room, Eliza and I sharing a room and aunt Jen having her own master room." I continued
"4am seems really early. What day is the wedding?" He asked
"On Saturday" I answered "So Eliza and I are probably gonna leave around 5:30 to get to the brides house, there we get dressed and do our hair and makeup."
"And me and Jordan?"
"You guys get three hours of sleep. Cherish it." I said, completely serious.
"I will" he smirked "something you can't do"
"Shut up" I retorted "I'm still trying to find a way to break it to Isla that I wasn't going to be wearing makeup"
"Why not?" He asked, looking at me.
"As a guy, you wouldn't understand the struggle that is wearing makeup. It's almost impossible to rub my eye or something when I have it on" I advised
"Why does it sound like you're terrified of telling your cousin you won't wear makeup?" He asked smugly
"You'll understand when you meet her" I sighed "So around 9 or so, you Jordan and aunt Jen will head out so that you could meet all of us, with full hair and makeup and take all the stupid pictures" I continued, rolling my eyes.
"Got it"' he nodded
"I'm not done yet" I continued "The ceremony will start around eleven or so and last an hour, maybe more knowing cousin Isla. The reception would then start at am guessing 12:30, along with lunch and everything, and then the after party. Where there will be alcohol, dancing, live music and other things that actually sound fun but really isn't"
"Sounds like...a handful" He said after a bit.
"It will be. But your job is easy. Just be nice to people who approach you. But you'll probably be with me the entire time, so it's fine" I replied
"It's a date"
