Blizzard
By William Carlos Williams

Snow:
years of anger following
hours that float idly down —
the blizzard
drifts its weight
deeper and deeper for three days
or sixty years, eh? Then
the sun! a clutter of
yellow and blue flakes —
Hairy looking trees stand out
in long alleys
over a wild solitude.
The man turns and there —
his solitary track stretched out
upon the world.

Lyttlejoe's Busted Gulch Volume 13:

The morning after Jake's run in with the big horn sheep, he almost overslept, Josie got him up and going.  He spent the day making nails with Petra and taking care of the goats.  Jacob then found the time to head over to find Billy and have a talk about Rue.  Billy informed Jake that he and Rue had not been intimate, explaining that he had helped her with some things she is going through.  However, Billy gave Jake some other information that did not sit well with Jake.  Raven and Cole, on their way to Snarky Shoe, came across a bounty hunter named Late Fate, who wants a favor.  Bella spoke with Brody about what she had seen, Jake leaving Mary Sue's room.  Bella decided that it would be best to tell Rue about it.  Rue was of course upset.  However, Bella was able to let Rue know that Ronan had not been unfaithful.  Bella then headed over to talk to CG and asked her if some of her poems could be published in the Pillar.  CG agreed, saying it was a brilliant idea.  Brody and Bella had a double date with Anna and Bart aboard the Liberty Bell.  Buck worked really hard on a beautiful crib for the twins, delivering it personally with Petra at his side.  Myna was thrilled and gave them a basket of goodies as a thank you.  Buck and Petra stopped for a picnic lunch; they were enjoying themselves when a shot rang out.

If you want to find out what's next, head on over to The Storytellers Saloon and check out Lyttlejoe's Busted Gulch Volume 13!!  Don't forget to add it to your reading list, new chapters are posted daily!

^^^^^^^^^ Free Verse ^^^^^^^^^

Our featured poetry form this month is free verse.  The origins of free verse poetry can be traced back to a late eight-teen hundreds (1880) French poetry movement called vers libre.  "In vers libre, the basic metrical unit is the phrase rather than a line of a fixed number of syllables, as was traditional in French versification since the Middle Ages. In vers libre, the lengths of lines may vary according to the sense of the poem, the complete sentence replaces the stanza as a unit of meaning, and rhyme is optional." [Source Encyclopaedia Britannica] However, authors such as Victor Hugo, Gustave Kahn and Jules Laforgue were experimenting with similar free verse forms before the vers libre movement.  As vers libre gained ground, some of the early English poets that were influenced by it were, T.E. Hulme, F.S. Flint, Richard Aldington, Ezra Pound, and T.S. Eliot.

Features of Free Verse

Free verse poems have no regular meter or rhythm.

They do not follow a proper rhyme scheme; these poems do not have any set rules.

This type of poem is based on normal pauses and natural rhythmical phrases, as compared to the artificial constraints of normal poetry.

The idea of free verse "to compose in sequence of the musical phrase, not in sequence of the metronome."
