Bird-Understander
By Craig Arnold
Of many reasons I love you here is one
the way you write me from the gate at the airport
so I can tell you everything will be alright
so you can tell me there is a bird
trapped in the terminal all the people
ignoring it because they do not know
what to do with it except to leave it alone
until it scares itself to death
it makes you terribly terribly sad
You wish you could take the bird outside
and set it free or (failing that)
call a bird-understander
to come help the bird
All you can do is notice the bird
and feel for the bird and write
to tell me how language feels
impossibly useless
but you are wrong
You are a bird-understander
better than I could ever be
who make so many noises
and call them song
These are your own words
your way of noticing
and saying plainly
of not turning away
from hurt
you have offered them
to me I am only
giving them back
if only I could show you
how very useless
they are not

Featured Poem-of-the-Week!
To the child me
By SoulFarAway
Don't fear the dark
nor the darkness
which lays inside people's heart.
You have your own torch
to illuminate yours:
Just shine.
Hug your brothers
and kiss your parents,
run after them when they march.
You must give
the first step:
Just inspire.
Spread love
and love will come in return.
Cause there's a law in this world:
We all get what we earn.
Just hold.

Lyttlejoe's Busted Gulch Volume 13:
Jacob planned a wonderful evening to show Ruechari what Christmas meant to him and his family. The evening ended with Jacob asking Rue to be his date for the Christmas Gala. However, Rue declined his offer and instead gave him a Christmas gift, a hand made native flute. Jacob insisted that he would stay with Rue instead of going to the Gala and as the two of them enjoyed a dace, Billy interrupted. Billy had his own gift for Rue, one that seemed to speak to her heart. Rue told Jacob to go to Josie and enjoy the Gala, then ended their conversation with a kiss. So, Jacob headed to the Gala and convinced everyone to head over to the casino and surprise Rue with some caroling to let her know how much we they all love her. 3Gun and CG made it to the Gala, both dressed to the nines. They shared a dance and 3Gun gave CG her gift, she was thrilled with the lovely pendant he had Petra make. The Mayor announced the deal that had been made with Ewell and company. As the Mayor was making introductions one of the newcomers recognized CG; William Land, seems to be related to CG. Billy watched as Jacob left the hotel after the caroling was done. Jacob went back to the Gala. Billy heard Rue scream, he rushed to her side; she has been having nightmares. Jujube and Billy took Rue to the elders, hoping they could help her. Denver and Missy sat and drank in the calm moments at the Gala. Reveling in the joy their family had found here in BG. Myna and Lorne enjoyed the Gala. Aunt Sue and Bubba had agreed to take care of the twins for them. Sister Mary and the orphans put on a Christmas pageant for everyone.

The thing to remember about the kenning (pronounced – ken-ing) is that it is two nouns being used to represent another noun.
Poetry is all about creating imagery with words and finding new ways to say or present our feelings and ideas. In this vein I think kennings can be used as to incite your imagination and awaken your inspiration. If you are having a hard time writing or finding inspiration, take a few moments to try and write some basic kennings. Choose a few words at random and write as many kennings as you can for each word. In other words, use it as a mental exercise to get your creative writing juices flowing.
Here is your Mega-Bonus Poetry Prompt – Down in the comments below, write some kennings for these Valentine's Day associated words.
<< Chocolate >>
<< Cupid >>
<< Roses >>
<< Candy >>
<< Date >>
