The Oven Bird
By Robert Frost

There is a singer everyone has heard,
Loud, a mid-summer and a mid-wood bird,
Who makes the solid tree trunks sound again.
He says that leaves are old and that for flowers
Mid-summer is to spring as one to ten.
He says the early petal-fall is past
When pear and cherry bloom went down in showers
On sunny days a moment overcast;
And comes that other fall we name the fall.
He says the highway dust is over all.
The bird would cease and be as other birds
But that he knows in singing not to sing.
The question that he frames in all but words
Is what to make of a diminished thing.

Lyttlejoe's Busted Gulch Volume 13:

The colt that Ron and Jhonny let escape, was caught by 3Gun.  Bella took charge of the colt and after breaking it, presented it to Josie as a birthday present.  Josie, of course, was thrilled.  Ronan got in a scuffle with Ewell and the Sheriff suspects Ewell may have something to do with Leo's death.  After putting out several "fires" around the casino and letting Bella know it was okay that she gave the colt to Josie, Rue contemplated whether settling in BG was the right thing to do or not.  Rue helped Jacob put together a wonderful birthday party for Josie.  Josie was completely surprised, and a great time was had by all! Jhonny asked Petra to make a special gift for Josie, in the hopes she would forgive him.  CG got all of her lovely gifts delivered, with the help of Ron.  Then she sat contemplating one final gift, for the person that has everything.  A couple of strangers to town, Uno Zabba and Jonathan Ray (Solomon's son) planned to scope out the town during the gala, seems they are plotting revenge.

If you want to find out what's next, head on over to The Storytellers Saloon and check out Lyttlejoe's Busted Gulch Volume 13!!  Don't forget to add it to your reading list, new chapters are posted daily!

flash-fiction-forum

Our Master of Flash competition is now closed. We would like to thank all those who participated. We at the FFF would now like to invite all members of the Poets Pub to drop by and check out the entries in this year end competition and vote for your favourites. It will be your votes that will help decide our very first Master of Flash.

Our first competition for 2020 is now up and running. The theme for February 2020 is, of course, Love.

We are looking for your little love stories. There is a 300 word limit to tell your story, but you can make as many submissions as you want. And lets see some originality. Love takes many forms and I know there are many stories floating around in those creative minds. So put these stories down and send them in.

Let's show this struggling sister site of the Poets Pub some love.

FEATURED FORM

What is a Kennings Poem?

To understand a Kennings Poem, you must first understand what a kenning is.  A kenning is a compressed form of a metaphor (usually two words - "wave's horse" = "ship"), that vividly describe a noun or proper noun.  The origins of the kenning can be found in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Icelandic poetry.

The famous poem Beowulf has some great examples of kennings:

"whale-road" = the sea

"light-of-battle" = a sword

"battle-sweat" = blood

"raven-harvest" = a corpse

"ring-giver" = a king

"sky-candle" = the sun

Some more modern examples of kennings would be:

"rug-rat" = a child

"book-worm" = someone who reads a lot

"head-hunter" = someone who seeks out professionals for companies

"brain-storming" = coming up with ideas

"pig-skin" = football

"gum-shoe" = detective

So, we go back to our original question;

What is a Kennings Poem?

Of course, kennings can be inserted into any type of poem, however, a Kennings Poem is usually written in the form of a riddle employing kennings to describe the object of the poem; person place, thing or concept.

What is the structure of a Kennings poem?

A Kennings Poem consists of any number of stanzas made up of two describing words. It can be made up of any number of Kennings.
