Chapter 1

Renee woke up to the paper deliverer ringing the bells on his cycle.

She groggily got out of bed and made her way to the kitchen. Her job took up a lot of her time and energy, making her long for one day of relaxation.

She poured herself a cup of coffee and sat down by the fireplace. She lived in an old-fashioned house and was disconnected from social media.

Because she rarely got free days like this, she wanted to make the most of it by doing all the things she enjoyed, including cycling.

She took her cycle out and drove away from her secluded cabin and into the town. The wind slapping her face and the increase in her heartbeat were the things she enjoyed while cycling.

Her enjoyment was shortlived however because a sudden mob of people came in front of her causing her to apply breaks immediately. The abruptness of the incident caused her to fall forward, flat on her face.

Enraged, she got up to face the mob, but their attention was elsewhere. They had surrounded the gates of a building and surrounded and were screaming, "We won't leave till we get what we seek!"

Renee walked up to a random person and asked, "What's going on here?"

"Which world do you live in?" The man asked rolling his eyes, "The government has put a seal on the state, no one is allowed to come in or out, and they won't tell us why!"

"What?" She asked shocked, she really should read the news more often. "When did this happen?"

"The seal was put last evening, maybe around 6" He replied.

Renee was taken aback, of all the things she'd imagined, this wasn't one of them. Her mind started imagining the worst scenarios. A powerful terrorist gang, a plague. It could be anything. The bigger question was;

Were they safe?

Paranoia.

It brought out the worst in even the most reputable people.

It's what Caden had heard from others, but today he was seeing it for himself.

After the news of the seal spread, people were panicking. No one wanted to wait for the protestors to get information out of the government, they took matters into their own hands.

Grocery shops were being raided by people, everyone was fighting for the last of canned noodles and whatnot.

The city was in chaos and the government had to do something to stop it.

Amidst the commotion, Caden's mind went out to his sister, who was in her dorm. He had to know she was safe, he took his bike and drove over to the military barracks.

However, he was denied entry by a security guard.

"Please, I have to go, my sister's in there," He said, trying to reason with the guard.

"I understand your concern, but there's nothing I can do" The guard replied, "Rules are rules"

"I know you're doing your job" Caden replied with a sigh. "Can you at least call her out?"

After considering it for a few seconds, he replied, "I'll see what I can do"

Because his sister worked for the military, there were a lot of rules she had to abide by. Especially at a time of chaos like this, she was expected to be on duty and couldn't leave in the middle.

He sat by an empty carton box near the entrance and waited.

"Will I ever see her again?"

In front of the palace-like building, the protestors continued screaming. Renee had also joined them, surely they had to face the public, after causing so much chaos.

The police tried to settle them down, but it wasn't working. The crowd had been here for four hours now, and by the looks of it, they wouldn't be stopping anytime soon.

Renee screamed for what felt like hours, her throat had become extremely sore by now, but that was the least of her problems.

The number of protestors seemed to have increased by a huge number, but after Renee, slowly others started joining in too.

Eventually, people completely lost it. The 'protest' turned into a violent attack. People were throwing eggs and stones at the glass windows and screaming, "You coward! Come and face us if you have the guts!"

The cops were holding everyone back with the help of some barricades, but the protestors were slowly losing their cool.

At last, they snapped. They pushed with all their might and send the cops falling down with the broken barricades. Renee knew they didn't have much time before the backup was called, they needed to get information by then. Everyone flung the placards they were holding and stormed inside, angrily looking for the Minister.

The protestors had split up and Renee was walking alongside some people, breaking open every door they find. Their march was put to an immediate stop at the sound of a low growl.

Renee turned her head frantically to locate the sound. The growl became louder and louder until it became a roar.

She turned her head, and could hardly process what she was seeing. Pale green skin, blood red eyes, teeth covered in dirt and ready to attack them.

They had seen it. The big secret.
