10- First Class
Through the door, I found a long, semi circle table. There where four seats along the outside, filled by society members, and one empty seat on the inside. I stepped inside, not sure exactly what to do.
"Um, hi, I'm Cora Leeman?" I said unsure how to do this. All heads turned to me at once. A young woman with blonde hair and deep blue eyes stood and walked over to me.
"Welcome, Cora. My name is Jessica Kent. I was chosen for the society last year, and it will be my main job to teach you all that the society has taught me." She said, holding out a hand. I smiled and shook it lightly.
"Please, sit." She said, showing me to the seat in the center. I sat down feeling a little nervous.
"Today we aren't going to be teaching you anything. We'd just like to get to know you a little." Said one of the society members. He got out a package of paper and handed it to me with a pen.
"If you would please fill this out. Its all multiple choice. Just so we can figure out the best way to teach you." He finished.
I nodded and opened the package. It was like those tests you got on the first day of school. Circle A, B, C or D so they can find out how your brain worked. I filled that part out fairly quickly, but at the end there where a few more personal questions.
Question 23: Have you ever broken a law?
A: Never
B: Once
C: Occasionally
D: Frequently
I automatically circled A, without thinking.
Question 26: How attached are you to your family?
A: Not attached
B: Somewhat attached
C: Fairly attached
D: Extremely attached
I knew the answer was D, but something kept making me keep the truth from them, as if I didn't fully trust them. I marked down C.
More and more questions like this came up, and I didn't know how to answer them. Finally I made it through the test. The three other members thanked me and took the test to go over the answers.
"Alright, now I can show you around the class room." Said Jessica. She stood once more and walked to the far end of the room.
"We have washrooms down here, as well as a snack bar. Feel free to help yourself to anything." She said.
"Further down here we have a station for neurological lessons. We will sometimes test you with these. It's a very simple process. You'll sit in the chair and we'll give you a serum to start the images. It's sort like a dream." She said. That station didn't seem very pleasurable, but I didn't get much of a chance to look at it before Jessica continued walking.
"Then down here we have our screens and the table. You won't need to bring anything to class, we'll provide everything for you." She said
"Unfortunately we'll have to go a little quicker, as our class is almost over. Other days they will be longer, but we only had two hours for today. Please follow me." Two hours? That meant I had to have taken at least an hour and a half on the test. I started feeling a little embarased,
Jessica walked over to a side table and picked up a stack of clothes.
"We will ask that you wear these on week days, when you have classes. There's a society suit, and a ring. The ring will open any doors in the city when you graduate, but for now it will work as a master key for the school. You are also expected to have your hair held in a bun at all times, except for weekend and holidays." She said with a smile.
I took the clothes from her and put the small silver ring on right away. It was very simple, but nice. I didn't know why I hadn't noticed that all the society member swore them.
"Well, that's just about it for today." She said. I smiled back at her as a thank you.
I noticed that neither of us had said anything for a while. We where just looking at each other silently. Suddenly Jessica looked away and walked to the door. I followed her awkwardly.
"We'll see you tomorrow, same time. We'll start actual classes then, so be on time." She said. I thanked her before leaving quietly. Once the door closed behind me I thought about our awkward intersection. I bit my lip and walked to the elevator, hitting the button and cursing under my breath. Soon I got back to my room and walked in. I set the clothes down on the living room table. I sighed and walked into the washroom. I looked the mirror. My brown hair hung loose, and I remembered that I was supposed to have it up.
Was that why she was looking at me for so long? Did she think it looked bad?
I opened a drawer in the counter to find a number of hair elastics and bobby pins. I got to work putting my hair I a tight bun on the back of my head. After several tries, I managed to get an alright looking one. I took the clothes off the table and changed into them. In my bedroom was a long, full length mirror. My reflection showed a member of the society. Silly hair and platinum shirt and skirt and all. This was the new me.
