1- Preparations

Three months ago was when it all started. Profession Day. The day every fifteen year old gets assigned a line of work. The most terrifying day of my life.

"Cora! Come have breakfast. I made you something special." My Mother called. I blinked open my eyes and starred vacantly at the ceiling. Today's the day, I thought to myself. I swung my legs off the side of the bed and walked to my dresser, picking out a faded denim sundress. I wore tight black leggings underneath.

I ran downstairs where my mother was setting down a plate of hash browns, scrambled eggs, sausages and toast. On a regular day, I would be eating a bowl of instant oat meal as I rushed out the door to work at the hover boot factory. A huge smile spread across my face. My sister, Ava rushed over and gave me a huge hug, her little arms wrapping around my waist. "Oh! Good morning." I said, a little surprised. I looked back to the massive pile of food on the table. "Mom, this smells fantastic, but... I mean... How did you even find it? It must have cost a fortune." I say. Good quality food was extremely hard to come by around here, and if you did find it, it would cost you both your arms. My mother gave me a strange sort of look, raising an eyebrow. "You didn't really think I'd let you go without a decent meal, did you? Eat up, it starts in an hour." She said, serving me a plate. My eyes widened a bit in disbelief. "An hour? Why didn't you wake me up earlier?" I asked, stuffing eggs into my mouth and almost forgetting to chew. "Don't worry. I'll do your hair while you eat." She said, picking up a hair brush.

I ate quickly, as it took half and hour to get to the city square on a good day. It was hard to eat the food slowly as I hadn't tasted flavours like this in years, but I kept shovelling it down so I could leave on time. My mother tied my hair up in a sort of bun, warping straw around the base to hold it in place." Alright, get out of here." She joked. "I'll be there with your sister in a little bit." She took my plate to the sink. "Thanks mom, I'll see you there." I turned to my sister. "See you Ava. Wish me luck?" I said, tousling her hair a bit. She responded by crossing her fingers. I smiled and headed for the door.

I grabbed my pair of navy flats and held them in one hand, the other carrying my hover boots. I stepped outside and slipped my feet into the metal boots. I swiped my finger across the scanner on the back and the boots made a beeping noise before tightening to the shape of my feet. I had stolen this pair from the factory rejects. Allot of them still worked, but they had slight mishaps that made them unsuitable for the stores. The only thing wrong with mine where that the sound they made when you swiped your finger was the one it was suppose to make when it was running low on batteries. It didn't effect the performance one bit.
