"This agreement is confidential and must not be told to others."
I took a glance at Jimin before nodding. It was more important that our agreement was being accepted. I wasn't so sure that we would be able to do it. With a bet for me to spin at that.
"You'll get one day," Lucy said as if that would make me fail.
"That's more than enough," I chimed and I couldn't help my smile.
The meeting ended soon and I took Jimin to an ice rink, holding my skates, ready to break him free from his chains. Since I came back as a Virtue, it felt like my emotions weren't there anymore. But now, my chest was filled with jitters and I couldn't stand still. My excitement was too much to be dull.
"I never would have imagined you saving me like this," Jimin said in awe, sitting beside me on a bench, still holding his skates and not wearing them. "Not long ago, you and I were so different from now. I couldn't even stand to see your face... Now... I just want to see you smile all the time..."
I stopped tying the laces to look up at him. I was too excited that I didn't notice. After this, we might never meet again.
He gave me a smile that didn't quite reach his sad eyes. "Can you do something? That promise thing you did with your dad?" He held up his pinky, waiting for mine. I stared at him in silence, trying to calm the small storm swirling inside me, and slowly locked my pinky with his. "Promise me you'll always smile. Even if I'm not here, I want you to smile. Be happy."
"I won't feel emotions like being happy now. And I can't always smile. What am I? An emoji?" I sighed, trying to lighten up the mood, but held his pinky tighter. "But I promise. Now you promise me."
His eyes held me with curiosity and adoration. They were crinkled in glee and his cheeks were squished in his smile. He was so happy that I promised him that.
"Promise me that you'll live. Live your life happily, how you want. And please don't harm yourself. Know that you're loved."
He brought up my hand with his to kiss it. "I'll live for you."
I shook my head, frowning in disapproval. "You should live for yourself."
He giggled, the sound lighting up my heart. "Okay, okay. I promise."
We exchanged smiles and put on our skates before going on the ice. The air between us was turning heavier and I didn't want it to be like that. I wanted our parting to be light and hopefully, sweet.
"I can spin easily. I can even do it multiple times in a row. Watch."
Jimin quickly seized my hand to stop me. "Wait. Before that... One last dance, please."
The desperation in his gaze pulled me in and I moved closer to put my hand on his shoulder and the other one in his to intertwine our fingers. He wrapped his free hand around my waist and led me across the rink. As we slid and danced on ice, my body felt light as if we were flying.
Jimin held me close against his body and it was only the two of us in the world in my eyes. They traced his features, the tender hooded dark eyes, the small cute button nose, the soft round cheeks and the plump kissable pink lips. I brought up my hand from his shoulder to caress his cheek and he closed his eyes, relishing the touch. I would miss him...
"When you're born again, I will find you," he whispered before placing a kiss on my forehead.
I wouldn't be able to do that. I wouldn't be reborn.
"If you won't, I will." I smiled sadly, making an empty promise that was prickling my chest.
"I promise," he breathed out, but I shook my head.
"If you can't, you should live without me."
Pain crossed his features. His eyes sought mine and I smiled warmly at him. He should know that it was fine. He should know that he didn't need me in his life, the next one or the one after that or ever. This was enough. Knowing he would live now was enough for me.
He made me spin with his hand on mine and I twirled a few times before stopping with my hand on his chest. We stopped and held each other in our gazes. His lips finally lifted up into a smile, albeit heartbreaking, and I returned it with a comforting one.
Our surroundings shifted and we were back to the room our agreement was made. I tightened my hold on his hands, not wanting to let go.
"The agreement has been concluded. It's time for your rebirth."
I shuddered at God's words but held it in when Jimin squeezed my hands, making me look at him again. I froze when I saw tears glossing his eyes.
"Goodbye, Saejin. Thank you. For being there. For everything. For loving me."
His voice was breaking but he was trying his best to sound fine. I placed a hand on his cheek, wiping the tear that rolled down.
"Thank you for loving me. Now, live. I know you can do it." I stepped closer to hug him for the last time, now perfectly healthy body turning weaker at the thought. "Goodbye, Jimin."
He held me tighter and only let go of me when they called for him. I looked at him for the last time and forced a smile even when I was crying. We were the same. He mouthed, "I love you," before walking away to where they waited. He disappeared along with the angels and I clutched my chest.
"Me, too."
