and i'll use you as a focal point, so i don't lose sight of what i want.

i turned over as sun pushed against my eyelids and small hands pressed against my chest. i let out a quiet yawn as i slowly opened my eyes to be met with damp brown hair.
"good morning," he whispered, pulling his hands away, "how was your sleep?"
i nodded, rubbing my eyes and letting them wander over his face. a light purple mark contrasted sharply to the pale skin of his right cheekbone and chin.
"holy shit, dan what happened?" i asked in an urgent tone as i brushed my thumb lightly over the bruise on his cheek.
"what? ouch!" he whisper shouted, swatting my hand away and moving back.
"sorry.. did that hurt?" i whispered, sitting up slightly and looking down at his grimacing face.
"no, it's fine." he shook his head slightly, the sadness leaving his face but remaining just as intense in his eyes.
i sighed, raising my eyebrows expectantly as he slowly sat up against the headboard.
"is that why you were crying yesterday?" i asked softly, moving closer and sitting beside him, looking down at his face.
he let out a small sigh, looking up into my eyes and nodding slightly, almost seeming like he didn't want to admit it.
"dan.. you.. you have to tell your mum, or the principal! this isn't right!" i exclaim. he clamped his hand over my mouth, pushing me down on my back and straddling me. he looked around the room as if someone were listening to our conversation.
i pulled his hand off gently as he slowly sat up, "what the fuck dan?" i whispered, concerned for the brown haired boy.
"no one can know, phil," he whispered urgently, looking in my eyes seriously. his jaw hung open slightly as his knees stayed either side of my hips and his small thighs brushed mine. "it'll only make it worse, promise me you won't tell anyone. please?" he begged in the same desperate tone.
"but dan-"
"promise?"
i sighed and nodded, not wanting to do anything to make dans life harder than it already seemed to be.
"thank you." he breathed out, a blush growing on his cheeks as he realised the position we were in and jumped backwards. "s-sorry.. we should get ready for school." he clambered off the bed, shaking his head to himself.

"how do you normally get to school?" i asked phil in a whisper. i stood behind him and watched him straighten his hair in my dresser mirror with the straightener i stole from my mum.
"bus," he hummed, placing the straightener down and turning it off. "what about you?" he asked, smiling as he turned around and looked slightly down at me.
i let out a small gasp, his smile was so beautiful in this lighting.
"dan?" he chuckled, raising his eyebrows as he looked at me, still waiting for an answer.
"oh! uh, my mum normally drops me off." i nodded, pressing my lips together as i felt blood colour my cheeks. i turned my eyes to my hands, seemingly unable to stop fiddling with them.
"but i can go on the bus with.. you." i told phil quietly, looking back up at him.
"well we better leave soon." he told me, pulling his phone from his pocket to check the time. fear barely flickered through his eyes, the light from his phone reflecting in the glasses he put on earlier.
"are you-"
"ready to go?" he smiled, pushing his phone into his back pocket and picking up his bag. he swung it over one shoulder before looking at me expectantly.
well obviously, he didn't want to talk about it. we made our way downstairs with no words exchanged.
"mum, can i catch the bus with phil?" i asked tentatively, hearing her chopping something in the kitchen.
"if you'd like sweetpea, aren't you having breakfast though?" she said sweetly, walking out of the kitchen to phil and i stood.
"oh - it's fine mum, i'm not really that hungry." i told her quietly.
"nonsense, let me get you boys something." she smiled, walking back into the kitchen to get us some food.
i could feel phil's eyes on my downturned face, not paying any attention to them though.
"here you go," my mums voice entered the room with her, two packets of crisps in her hands, "i know it's not that healthy, i hope you don't mind phil." she laughed softly, phil laughing with her.
"thank you." he said kindly, taking both.
"we'd better go mum." i said quietly, my face flushing red as she kissed my cheek.
i walked out the door, phil following closely.
the walk to the bus stop wasn't too long
but it was dead silent.

i pressed my lips together, watching dan play with his fingers as he shivered slightly. it was autumn and the days were filling with cold air.
i shuffled slightly closer, so our thighs were pressed against each other's on the cold bench. his eyes snapped upwards to my face, his cheekbones glowing red.
"are you cold?" i asked in a whisper, a small smile playing on my lips.
he shook his head subtly, pulling the sleeves on his deep blue parka over his hands more as a sweet smile consumed his face.
i nodded, looking up and down the road to try see the bus.
"um, phil, can you help me?" he whispered hesitantly, the warm breath from his words tickling my ear.
i felt my cheeks heat for a second before turning to him. "hmm?"
he giggled shyly, holding out his small fists, "can you button up my cuffs?" he pressed his lips together. He looked adorable in that moment, with his cheeks red from the cold and his arms stuck out towards me.
"dan- you're such a dork, of course i will." I rolled my eyes playfully, holding one of his small hands in mine as i gently buttoned up the cuffs so they would stop riding up his arms.
and then we sat there with shy smiles on our faces, hoping the bus would never arrive.
