Chapter 19
The entire room held their breath as they eagerly awaited Dr Forrester's update. Sol had stopped pacing, his feet throbbing from the sudden change in movement and speed. The gang didn't dare breathe, blink or flinch as they tried to work out what the words out of Dr Forrester's mouth were going to be. The way he sighed and slumped his shoulders told Sol all he needed to know. His legs buckled but he grabbed hold of the bed frame to try and style it out. He needed to look like he had it all together. He was the lead of the gang and they would look to him for help, support and guidance. Regardless of what he was about to hear, he needed to look level headed. The ache in his gut was unmistakeable, but he did everything in his power to squash it down and ignore it. The silence was killing them all, chipping away at their normally hardened exteriors as the seconds went by.
"She's... well... the next twenty four hours are crucial." Aaron's tone dragged everyone further into a depression. There wasn't a single note of positivity as he spoke. "She's tough, but these beatings have sent her body into meltdown. I'm waiting for an ultrasound scanner to be brought in for me to check her abdomen. We are not out of the woods yet." Everyone exchanged glances, offering each other a sad nod to say they're here to support the other. "Raj, you'll be good to go back out tomorrow morning if your checks are okay through the night. I'm not sure how you want to work that out with everything going on. But I'll leave you to talk amongst yourselves. I need to head back into the office and do some paperwork." Dr Forrester offered a solemn smile as he backed out of the room as quickly and quietly as possible, closing the door behind him before anyone had the chance to digest the news or ask any questions. He wouldn't be able to answer them anyway, due to patient confidentiality, but he didn't even want to give them the chance. He was already broken up about the work he'd had to do to stabilise her, he didn't really want to talk about it anymore. He stopped by her door on his way to the office and stared at her unconscious body. That was one of the most terrifying moments in his history of being a doctor, and he'd seen almost everything you could imagine. Something about the connection he had with her made that the most difficult save ever. He mentally facepalmed at his stupidness. He should never have allowed himself to let anyone in. We were supposed to be impartial, just in case of an emergency. He sighed inwardly as he headed into his office and slumped down at the desk, tired and defeated but now snowed under by a mountain of paperwork.
Everyone in room one collectively let out the breath they'd been holding in before all eyes landed on Solomon. This was their way of checking in on him; they knew he was close with Lex. They knew she meant something to him. How would he handle the news that she still may not make it?
"I want Toby and Ty to stick together, Raj and Eddy too. Never leave the others side, we need to make sure that what happened today does not happen again." Sol ordered as if they hadn't just gone through that ordeal over the last few hours. "Let me speak to Aaron and the Gov now. Eddy stay here, Toby and Ty head back to your rooms." For a moment everyone looked at him, flabbergasted. His palms got sweaty, which he casually tried to wipe onto his trousers by pretending to dust them off. No one dared ask the question that was on everyone's mind. Why was he pretending? Everyone in the room had an ache in their chest from the news, Raj felt sick with guilt. They were almost mentally prepared for Sol to crack, even if it were only for a few seconds. "Did you hear me? Get moving!" Sol erupted, causing everyone to straighten. The two members quickly said their goodbyes as they rushed out of the hospital, Eddy locking the door again after they left. He swiftly returned to Raj's side and sat down, avoiding eye contact with Sol. In one swift motion, Sol turned to the door and marched out, heading straight towards the doctor's office with his mind whirring with things to say. He didn't make it there though, his eyes caught the outline of Lex in her room through the window and his body came to a halt. He told himself not to look in, but at the same time he told himself that might be the last time he sees her. Before he realised what was happening he was inside her room, looking down at her lifeless body. He took a seat next to her and placed a hand over hers. For what felt like an eternity, he stayed like this; listening to her faint breaths, feeling her warm skin under his palm.
"I had a feeling I'd find you in here." A voice cut through the silence and made him spin round. Aaron stood in the room, gently closing the door behind him.
"Thank you for helping her." Sol whispered, making sure no one else could hear his break in character.
"I've let the Gov know everything. He's got the guards keeping their eyes peeled for suspicious crowds, especially near any of your cells. He's doubled the visibility at social, he really wants this to be sorted." Sol let out a flat laugh. Wants it sorted? Sounds like the gang were an inconvenience rather than someone he wanted to help.
"Lex needs to make it through the night first. If she doesn't, I swear I'm going to rip every fucking head from every pair of shoulders in this prison." Aaron stepped back instinctively, unsure of how Sol would react to his next sentence.
"You and Eddy need to head back to your cells now, Sol. Gov gave me a ten minute warning." Sol didn't move, he didn't even look over at Aaron. His gaze stayed on Lex's face. She looked like she was sleeping. "Sol, this isn't a joke. He will shock you."
"I'm not moving." He responded adamantly. Aaron looked to the sky as if he was praying for some help from a higher power.
"Sol... I understand, really I do. But Gov can't risk you staying here overnight; not with the equipment, the access to medication, the fact you could overpower me." Sol leapt to his feet quickly, grabbed Aaron's shirt in his fists and threw him against the wall.
"I will give you one chance to tell the Gov I'm staying in here. Don't make me show you what will happen if I get shocked." His voice unfaltering, his body firm, Aaron knew he meant every single syllable of what he just said. "Eddy can go, but I'm staying here with them both." Aaron sighed into Sol's fists.
"Okay, let me see what I can do."
