twenty
It just takes me a few more minutes to find the street H mentioned in his letter and it is a fairly easy task because the music reaches my ears even above the song that's currently playing on my mobile.
I take off my earbuds and walks towards a small crowd that keeps me from seeing what's in front of the big fountain. Once I'm closer I can see five people with instruments. There's a guy sat on a percussion box, next to him another guy with a cello and at the other side a girl with a violin. A bit ahead another guy stands with a guitar and next to him a girl with a guitar as well, who's currently singing. She's clearly Asian and she must be the one H mentioned. If Moni were here she could tell me if she's Chinese, Japanese or Korean because she just can differentiate them, me on the on the other hand can't, no matter how many times my friend tries to tell me the differences between nationalities. Lee Won was her name. Now, how on earth do you pronounce that? Should I call Moni for help?
I disregard that detail and focus on the music they are making, combining all the instruments in a new version of Somewhere Only We Know. Her voice is amazing, angelical is the only adjective I can think of to make her justice. It’s like it wraps me in a warm blanket and makes me feel at home and I had never felt like that hearing a voice before.
I clap like everyone else when they finish and they bow to us with big smiles. They all look so happy with the audience’s reaction. Then people throw some money inside the guitar case that already have quite the nice profit. I also step forward and give them some more. People leave but I stay behind. They seem to be taking a small break and I feel kind of bad for intruding, but if she's like the others H has sent me to, then she's been waiting and she has the next clue to get to H.
I clear my throat and Lee Won turns around to look at me.
"We'll play another soon. Just a small break," she informs me and I shake my head. I want to listen to them again, but it's not exactly that the reason why I'm here.
"Um, a friend sent me here. I’m Maca," I say hoping that's enough, as it's been for the other people I've met today.
Her eyes widen in recognition and excitement and she takes off her guitar to come to me, the other four people watch us with kind smiles on their lips.
"Maca! So you're the famous Macarena. I've heard a lot about you, there's this guy who can't stop talking about you," she laughs and I blush furiously. "I'm Lee Won Kim," she introduces herself with a small bow. Oh, so it's not exactly like the English words. Thankfully, I have good ear and I can distinguish the phonetic difference.
"Nice to meet you," I say and I don't know if I should bow, too. Is it considered disrespectful if I do it when I know nothing about her culture, whichever this is? I decide to just nod and smile.
"I'm glad you made it. We've been waiting for you. Did you hear us before?" she asks so happily and I find myself smiling too. Her excitement is contagious and her smile is really cute.
"The ending of the song you were performing before," I reply and she nods, understanding perfectly. "It was really good!" I praise immediately and she giggles.
"Thank you. That's not our best song but I'm glad you liked it. Oh but where are my manners! Let me introduce you to the others," she exclaims and grabs my wrist to drag me to where the other four people are waiting with smiles still playing on their lips.
There are all so different. The percussion box guy is tall and very skinny with long black hair he keeps in a ponytail. The guitar guy is short, as short as I am with blond hair he keeps buzz cut at the sides with a fluffy quiff on top of his head. The cellist is Afro-American and the violinist is ginger, naturally ginger with dozens of freckles across her nose.
"Guys, let me officially introduce you to Macarena. Maca, these are Roger, he's a drummer but it's not convenient to carry the drum set," she chuckles and the guy gives me a smile and nod of recognition. "The guy with the guitar is Pete, he's a flirt so beware!"
"Oi! I'm not that dangerous!" he protests and I laugh but then he looks at me with a grin and winks.
I blush.
"And then you say you're not a flirt," Lee Won mumbles but she sounds too amused. "The cellist is Max," he also nods at me as a greeting, "And the violinist is Amanda," she finishes the introductions and the girl gives me a smile and waves both hands at me.
"It's a pleasure to meet you all," I honestly say. "I loved what you did before," I add and they look at each other with knowing grins.
"We can do better than that," Pete says and I only smile, excited to see them doing better.
"I'd love to see more. How did you begin playing together?" I ask looking at them all but my eyes end on Lee Won, expecting her to answer.
"We all study music so this is great practice for us. Plus, it helps a bit to get some quids, you know?" she replies, almost as if it were a confession. I feel like whispering, too. "In fact, that's how I met Re— oops. He told me not to say his name. Almost!" she laughs and I smile. Almost. "How do you call him?" she asks me.
"H," I reply and she nods.
"Oh, for his first name. Got it," she nods to herself. "Anyhow, we met with H in a class we shared and I invited him to see us perform. He comes every Sunday and brings us snacks," she explains and I can't help the smile. "He's always that considerate."
I can't fight my smile and I can only say I agree. He's done so much for me without even knowing me in person. It's good to know he's like that to everyone, it puts me at ease that he's not being this kind only to me to trick me or something.
"It was weird when he asked me to help him. I couldn't understand why he didn't give you his name and made things easier. That guy, loves to make things complicated. An actor had to be," she snorts rolling her eyes and I laugh. "'I have my reasons,' he said. Meh was my answer," I laugh again. "Are you at least having fun with all these things he's made you do?" she asks next and I nod enthusiastically.
"Loads of fun. It's been an amazing experience so far," I reassure her and she smiles widely at me.
"So, what does the lovely girl want us to play?" Pete asks next and I go blank.
I knew this would happen. It's like when people ask you to say something in another language when they know you can speak it.
But I take my mobile out, remembering I came listening to music for a reason. The last song that was playing was Let It Go and that seems like a good option.
"Can you do Let It Go?" I ask because maybe it isn't in their repertoire. The Frozen boom was last year.
They look at each other again and smiles start to spread across their faces, so I take that as a good sign.
"Of course we can and we'll make sure it's memorable," Pete promises as Lee Won steps forward to get her guitar back. They start to get ready and my excitement is bubbling inside. "Sit here," Pete offers the place he was sitting at and I nod in gratitude as he stands up and they all get in their positions. The difference is that now they are facing me.
Roger and Pete start, the notes of the introduction accompanied of a soft percussion, then Lee Won joins with a soft melody that I can recognise already. Her voice joins and it's so soft and sweet, yet a bit cold, like winter wind. I don't know how she does that.
I mouth the lyrics I know by heart and I see her smiling. When I'm about to start with "a kingdom of isolation" I notice she sings that in another language: French. My eyes widen in surprise and I can see all their expressions, satisfied smirks.
And then she changes again, German I think, I don't know that many languages so I can’t be sure. And she keeps changing languages with such ease, the words rolling off her tongue as if she were native. I'm so amazed I can't even close my mouth.
At the chorus Max and Amanda join and it sounds amazing as Lee Won sings now in Japanese. Or at least I think it's Japanese.
People are gathering around, as amazed as I am whilst the song keeps up, the rhythm a bit faster, catchier and she keeps switching languages. I'm amazed she knows the song in all the variations, like that video I once watched on YouTube. I mean, it's okay to know the whole song in one language, two at most. But over ten languages? Even if they are just bits and pieces, it's still amazing. And she keeps switching and now Pete and Roger do the backup voices and the whole song sounds like something I've never heard before. I look beyond them and even more people are gathered and they look as astounded as I am.
Lee Won finishes in I don't know what language but it sounds amazing and she gives it the whole Elsa feeling and I have goose bumps. I swear! I've never seen such a thing, live! I mean, have they rehearsed this before? I just asked this, it could've been any song. They had no way to know I would request this. How? How on Earth did they manage to do this?!
Now I understand H when he said prepared to be amazed. I can't stop clapping like my life depends on it, bouncing now on my feet as the crowd explodes in cheers and acclamations. They all bow again but no one stops clapping.
This was mind blowing!
They are all grinning happily and content, knowing they impressed the whole audience and gained a fervent fan now. I want to give them all my money and apparently I'm not the only one, they receive more money than with their previous performance.
They were right, they could do better.
Pete picks up the guitar case once the audience has drifted apart, Max and Amanda put their instruments in their respective cases and Lee Won approaches me, taking off her guitar.
"I assume you liked it," she says and I nod like maniac.
"Loved it! It was phenomenal. Wow. How many languages?"
"Twenty-five," she answers and I just gasp. "When everyone was doing their covers of this song we also wanted to try. As I'm quite good with languages we thought it would be a good idea to try the multi-lingual version. Now it's part of our repertoire."
"It was fantastic! I'm still mind blown!" I exclaim and she laughs as the rest of her friends join us. "I'm so happy H sent me here. I'll come back to see you perform other days," I promise.
"We're counting on that," Pete says with a wink that, once again, makes me blush a little.
"And talking about H, here's the letter he left for you," Lee Won says looking for something in her guitar case. She hands me a new envelope and when I receive it I remember I need to take a picture with this guys.
We squeeze together and Roger, the one with the longest arms, pulls the Polaroid so he can snap the picture. My smile is huge and honest, hyper and delighted. It reflects my emotions so well. And we all look happy, too. I even ask them to sign the picture because I've declared myself their biggest fan.
"We have to go," Lee Won says and I lose my smile. "We were just waiting for you and now that you saw this and got the letter, we'll leave you alone so you can read it calmly."
"Oh," I say, a bit disappointed. For some reason I want to spend more time with them, see them keep doing music.
She laughs, noticing my reaction. "Don't worry, we'll be here next Sunday. You could come with H," she says and my smile comes back, elated with the idea.
"And if you realise H is just a drama queen and you want a real man," Pete intervenes, sitting by my side on the edge of the fountain and passing his arm over my shoulders. "I'll be here, waiting." And again, a smirk and a wink and I feel my cheeks burning.
He's beyond a flirt.
"Stop harassing her," Lee Won says, smacking his head and succeeding and pulling Pete apart. "She already got her man, you look elsewhere."
I blush even more when she says that and I don't even know what to reply with. At the end I remain silent and embarrassed.
"It was great meeting you," Lee Won says sweetly this time. "I really hope we can meet again."
"Likewise," I reply and then it's saying goodbye to each one of them before they take their leave. I stay behind with a lovely picture and a letter to read, a letter that will take me closer to H.

Did you like it? I hope so! It was fun to write. And if you had problems reading (or not reading) the previous chapter, I'm sorry. There was nothing else I could do to fix it :(
Bel, xx
