Chapter 32
The entire household was completely silent, except for the cries of three small and perfectly healthy babies. They all lay huddled together in a box with a pillow covering the bottom. A towel was draped over them to make sure they were nice and warm as well. Since Rin didn't have any baby supplies, she had to make due with what she had. Everything was going perfectly fine at first. The two grandmothers cleaned each one off and wrapped them up nicely, since they didn't have any clothes or diapers to wear at the moment. And oh were they absolutely adorable! Everyone in the room couldn't seem to keep their eyes off of them.
The two boys had short strands of black hair sticking out of their heads, which matched beautifully with a pair of large blue eyes. Their pale skin was then accompanied by two whisker marks going across each cheek. The little girl had the same markings, but definitely did not look like her brothers at all. Not only was she the smallest of the three, but was also the one who looked the most different. Her bright red hair made her stand out amongst them all. Not only that, but she had piercing, narrow black eyes and slightly tanned skin. And oh were her cries the loudest! But everyone seemed to be focused on something else...something far more important than holding either one of them at the moment.
Their mother was in critical condition! Everyone stood around the bed while staring down at the blonde. There wasn't much color to his skin, and the only thing that was keeping him alive, was a machine. He couldn't even breathe on his own! While opening Naruto up to deliver the babies, he ended up losing way too much blood and slipped into a coma. Once that happened, only a few minutes later and he stopped breathing altogether. They were hoping that the Kyuubi residing in him would help heal his body so that he would be able to live longer, but...it looked like that wasn't going to be happening. All of this had taken its toll on someone so small and fragile. Having to endure being cut open to take out so many babies was something that he, in the end, couldn't handle.
Naruto really did fight for his life as much as he possibly could! Before his condition worsened, he actually broke down crying and begged for Rin to do something...anything to save his life! He didn't want to die. How could he do so without even holding his precious little babies that he has been carrying around for seven whole months? This just wasn't fair to him at all. Why did this have to happen to him? He tried his hardest to make sure that they were all safe and healthy, growing inside of him. Both him and Sasuke showered them with so much love and affection. They can't grow up with their own mother! No one deserved that kind of life. Each and every one of them deserved to know what a mother's love was like.
"You know what has to be done, Sasuke. It's been six hours and he's showing no signs of progression. He's...he's gone." Rin whispered toward the raven He was just standing there with his husband's hand in his own, staring blankly at him. Since it was impossible to cry, everything that he was feeling was being held in his facial expression...and oh was he hurting badly.
Sasuke grit his teeth together. "Shut up, you're really starting to piss me off. He's not gone, damnit!" He hissed out angrily. He didn't want to accept the fact that he would no longer get to feel his lover's warm body...to hear his strong heartbeat pounding away in his chest... To...be able to watch his angelic face while he slept at night. And to think, he spent all of that time learning how to cook food, too! "This is your fault. How dare you not do your job properly!" He said much louder now.
Mikoto placed a hand on her son's shoulder, frowning. "That isn't fair. Deep down, you know it really isn't Rin's fault. She tried her best to save him. You saw it with your very own eyes..." She spoke quietly. There just wasn't enough blood here to save his life. The moment she not only saw, but heard the gush of blood spill onto the floor, made her feel sick to her stomach. It was weird, because...vampires didn't get sick like that. There was just so much of it, and it wasn't stopping!
His eyes closed while inhaling deeply, trying his best to remain calm. It wasn't easy knowing that his husband was pretty much lifeless right now, only being kept alive by a machine that was doing the breathing for him. And if he gets unplugged, that's it. He couldn't just allow Naruto to lye here forever while being a vegetable! What kind of life would that be? No...he knew what needed to be done. But this very thought scared him a little. He thought he would have more time to prepare himself. Having to turn your very own lover wasn't exactly an easy thing to do, especially when you loved them being a human.
Just then Itachi walked into the room and placed some papers onto the bed. "I did some research on the Kyuubi. If his host dies, then he will escape and cause havoc. It cannot survive in a dead vessel. So I dug deeper into this and realized something. If it wants to live so badly, then...it probably won't let Naruto die completely. Do you know where I'm getting at?" He asked.
Kushina was actually the first one to chime in. Her gaze lingered on the small babies, while reaching down to stroke at their squishy faces. "He will become a half-breed? Meaning...the human part of him will keep the Kyuubi alive, since that's all it really needs...?" She suggested.
He nodded. "Right. As long as Naruto's heart continues to beat, then he will continue to remain inside of his body. And this is good news! It means that he will still be able to walk outside during broad daylight. He will be able to eat both food and blood. Not only that, but his age will even come to a halt. But do you want to know what's even better than that?" A small smile began to spread on his lips then as he waited for someone to guess.
Sasuke only stared at him, not feeling like playing the guessing game right now. He simply was in no mood. "Spit it out already, nii-san..." He mumbled. Sure it all sounded pretty amazing, but still...he should have lived out his human life a little bit longer.
Itachi picked up the little baby girl and cradled her in his arms. "If you two ever want to have anymore children, you'll still be able to. Because if the Kyuubi were to leave his body, it would be impossible. But now that Naruto will be a half-breed, well...he will still make it possible for you guys to have more children in the future. So this works out better than you just turning him later on when the time was ready..."
Kushina's eyes welled up with tears. To her, it seemed like everything had fallen into place and was going to work out perfectly. "S-so my son will be fine then? He...he can still live a normal life?" She asked, before the tears spilled over and ran down her face.
"Nothing about this is better. It still doesn't change the fact that he wasn't ready for this yet!" Sasuke pushed through everyone and left the room, going back downstairs and heading outside. He fell to his hands and knees, struggling to cope with all of this. Shouldn't he be happy about this? His sweet and innocent Naruto was getting the chance to continue to live a normal life, all the while still be able to give them more children if needed. It really did sound perfect. But he was still going to be different! There was going to be that vampire side to him now. He was going to have to sit there while watching him actually drink blood! Even though he can still eat human food, he couldn't just live off of that anymore. It would be bad for his body, for his other half needed to be fed as well.
This was supposed to be happy day. They should be celebrating and holding their babies, while showing them with so much love! But even he hasn't held either of them yet. He wanted to wait until Naruto had woken up, but now that wasn't even going to be happening anymore. Once he opens those eyes, he'll be living in a different body that he isn't use to. His fingers clawed at the ground beneath him while cursing under his breath. Was he going to feel betrayed? Angry? Hurt? A part of him didn't even want to find out. It needed to be done by he himself though. It was him who needed to change his husband! It has been a while since he has tasted his blood. His tongue ran across his dry lips then.
"I'm sorry...I was supposed to protect you!" He yelled out. Right now he felt like such a failure. It was his fault for being so impatient in getting Naruto pregnant. If only they had waited, maybe...there wouldn't have been three of them. He should have known that this would be too much for him, and yet he continued to go about all of those months with no worries, actually believing that he was really strong enough for this. He was nothing but a fool! His expectations for the blonde were just way too high, and now look what happened. "I'm sorry...I'm sorry...I'M SORRY!"
"Sasuke!" Itachi quickly ran over to his younger brother and knelt down at his side. He placed a gentle hand on his back and rubbed at it. Everyone could hear him yelling all the way inside it was that loud. He could see just how torn he was at this, and felt so sorry for him. Why couldn't he get the happy ending that he deserved? "No matter what, Naruto will always be Naruto. Whether he be a half-breed or a full-blooded vampire...nothing about his personality will change. He is still your husband. He is still the mother of your children. He is still the one who stole your heart and filled it with so much love. He is the one who changed you into a much better person, so do never forget these things!"
Sasuke slowly looked up at him. What his old brother just said was true! It didn't matter what his husband was, for he will always be the person who he fell in love with. He married that person and had three beautiful babies with him! There wasn't a single thing he should be regretting. His life was so perfect, and it was all thanks to Naruto. Without him...he would have died alone, never knowing what it was like to be loved, or to be happy. And even after he changes, he will remain being the same adorable idiot that he has always been. This was something he should have realized much sooner.
"Let's go back inside. You know that this is the right thing to do. I know it isn't an easy thing to do, but...Naruto doesn't deserve to be hooked up like that while lying there helplessly. He wants to hold his babies that he carried inside of him, and you know that..." Itachi calmly stated.
"I-I know. This is...for the best." Slowly standing back up, he turned around to face the house. Flashbacks of the past seven months began to swim through his mind. From when they found out that Naruto was pregnant, to finding out how many babies were actually growing in him. And then there was the time where they both felt them kick for the first time, to Sasuke pressing his ear against the blonde's belly to hear all of their heartbeats. All of those nights when he couldn't sleep because they were moving around too much and kicking at his insides. Daddy Sasuke would always be there to help calm them down just enough to make his beautiful husband more comfortable in order to go back to sleep.
His hand slowly rose up to gaze at the bracelet that dangled from his wrist. It was the very first thing that Naruto had bought him. He remembered receiving such a precious gift for his birthday...the very birthday that he forgot all about. It was expensive, but that's not why he wore it. No...it was because of the meaning behind it, that he never took it off. Pale fingers trailed along the fox charm that hung from it, actually smiling a little once he read the word 'Kitsune'. It felt like just yesterday this all happened. Too bad everything was changing now.
Sasuke held his wrist over his chest and sighed. If his heart could beat, it would be pounding in his chest right now. And...he was pretty sure that he would even be blushing on top of it! "I'll save you Naruto. You will get to hold them real soon here..." He whispered to himself. And finally, he began to make his way back into the house. This wasn't going to be an easy process for either of them. It was actually going to be very painful! That's the part that scared him the most, was having to watch him writhe in pain like that. But luckily it wasn't going to last too long.
At least when they have another child in the future, no one will have to worry about Naruto dying, since his body will be able to endure it a whole lot better. His eyes slowly turned a bright red color, the fangs in his mouth growing to a much greater length. Yeah, maybe everything really was going to be okay. Besides...this is what they both wanted. It's just happening a lot sooner than expected. Now they will both be able to live with their children forever. No one is going to lose anyone. They will forever be a happy, growing family! Yes, that's what Sasuke needed was to think only positive thoughts right now. He couldn't back down from this and let his husband die!
Once reaching the bedroom, his hand froze on the doorknob. His brother stood alongside him, waiting patiently for him to enter. "Do you think...he will still be happy once waking up?" He murmured.
Itachi didn't even need to hesitate to answer that one. "Of course he will be happy. As long as he is able to live his life with the family he has longed for, then it will be no problem..." He replied with a gentle smile.
"R-right..." Sasuke pushed the door open and stepped back inside, looking around at everyone. They all stood there staring at him, as if waiting for him to proceed with the task he needed to do.
Rin went right up to him then. It was obvious that she had been crying while he went on his little adventure outside. She really did believe that this was all her fault. Fixing him was out of her hands now, and that was causing her to feel very sad. "I apologize for not being a good enough doctor. If I had been more skilled, then...maybe...m-maybe you wouldn't have to go through with this..." She said, before fresh tears began to stain her face.
"Rin..." He said, placing a hand on top of her head. "You are a phenomenal doctor. His body just couldn't handle all of this. We all should have been more careful...should have prepared for this day a whole lot better. There are a lot of what ifs, and could haves. But there's no point in wasting our time questioning everything. We need to act on what is going on right now in the present...and that is to save Naruto."
Kushina held one of the baby boys closely to her chest while nuzzling at him. All three of them were a part of her son. The two boys shared the exact same eyes as him, which made her feel so happy! Not to mention they all had those whisker marks on their chubby cheeks. They were simply perfect. "We knew this day was going to come. And we had accepted this when you decided to take our son's hand in marriage. Seeing him so happy being here with you...we couldn't just say no and turn our backs on him. E-even if that meant turning him into a whole different being, we knew it was for the best..."
Minato nodded in agreement. "Our son belongs here with you all, and we know that. And it's not like he is going anywhere. So please...hurry up and bring him back. We hate seeing him like this..." He said, while holding the other boy in his arms. The little girl had finally calmed down and was actually sleeping in the makeshift box, all cuddled up underneath the warm towel.
Sasuke made his way over to the bed and peered down at the blonde. His hand reached out to touch the scarred cheek, letting it linger there for a few seconds. It then traveled down to rest against his neck, staring at the pulsating vein inside of it. There were two spots where he could take the blood from. Either the neck, or the wrist. It already felt weird thinking about this. He didn't want to drink Naruto's blood! But as he focused more on these thoughts, that's when he noticed the sweet scent of him. It really was making him more thirsty. "I suggest you both leave the room for this..." He muttered, obviously referring to the only two humans that were standing in the room.
"N-no way! We're not going to leave our son's side for a second. Do not think that we are too weak to see any of this..." Kushina snapped at the Uchiha.
"Hn. So you want to see the very life sucked from your own son, and then watch him writhe in agony?" He shot right back at her. This was something that no parent should see.
Her eyes narrowed into slits. "I know it won't be easy. How could it be? But that still doesn't change the fact that we are his parents! We have every right to be in here at his side while this is happening!"
Sasuke glared right back at her with those intense eyes of his. The look on his face made him look that much scarier. "You both are fools, thinking you can endure seeing your very own son like this..."
"That is enough, Sasuke..." Fugaku cut in. Being a parent himself, he could understand where they were coming at. If this were his son in this position, he would want to stay in here as well.
"...Fine. But do not come crying to me if you're traumatized because of this..." He grumbled to himself. Well he was only trying to help them out! As if he wanted to see Naruto's parents freak out over the changes he was about to go through. And he only wanted to do this because he did care about them. But they were being stubborn! His hands cupped at his face, tilting his head back to expose more of his neck. His fingers pressed at the vein he needed to puncture, hesitating for a moment. This was it. He was actually going to be turning someone! When was the last time he actually drank from someone?
"I really am sorry Naruto. This won't last very long..." And with that, the Uchiha ducked his head and sank his fangs into the warm, soft skin of his neck.
