Chapter Thirty Nine
Remus' heart dropped as he ran into his boyfriend after their fifth class. He had his head ducked with the hood of Remus' sweatshirt pulled over his head. However, the tears streaming down his face and the slight shake of his body was what caught Remus' eye. He immediately began weaving through the crowds of people in the hallway in an attempt to reach the boy. Once he reached his boyfriend, Remus touched his shoulder lightly. Dee shrugged his hand off, refusing to stop. "Dee, what happened?" Remus asked as he caught up to the slightly smaller boy. Dee finally met his eyes, his expression breaking Remus' heart. "Sorry, didn't realize it was you," he muttered. "It's okay, but what's got you so upset?" Remus asked as he laced their fingers together. Dee sniffled. "I don't know how much more I can take, Re," he admitted. "What happened?" Remus asked again. "People keep talking about my scar. It's just like at my old school and I hate it. They were horrible, Re," Dee choked out, silent tears falling down his cheeks. Remus watched him for a moment before realizing what needed to happen for his boyfriends wellbeing.
"Let's get you home," Remus said softly. "But...we have school," Dee responded weakly. "I don't care. Your well-being in more important than any class," Remus stated firmly as he wrapped his arm around his boyfriends waist, leading him to the exit. "Thank you so much," Dee whimpered as they left the building. Remus pressed a soft kiss to his boyfriend's temple as they began the walk to his house. In the back of his mind, Remus was all too aware that he'd be in an enormous amount of trouble when his parents found out that he'd skipped class. Especially with his Papa. At the moment, however, he couldn't seem to bring himself to care. Not when his boyfriend was clinging to him tightly and sobbing harshly.
The pair soon arrived in front of Dee's house, knocking on the front door. The door soon swung open, revealing a slightly confused middle aged woman. Her confusion morphed into concern as she registered her son's distraught state. "Oh my goodness, Dee, what happened?" she asked as she ushered the pair inside and shut the door. Dee pulled down his hood, revealing his exposed scar. The woman looked at him sympathetically. "Were people giving you a hard time," she asked sadly. Dee nodded, wiping at his eyes. "I'm so sorry, mi amor," she said softly as she pulled him into a hug. Remus watched the scene quietly, not wanting to interrupt the moment. However, the woman soon turned and locked eyes with him. "And who is this?" she asked with a kind look on her face. Dee smiled softly through his tears. "I was hoping to introduce you under better circumstances, but this is Remus." Dee's mother gasped slightly before turning to the boy. "My goodness, it's so nice to finally meet you! Dee hasn't stopped talking about you since you two finally got together!" Remus bit back a giggle. "Mom," Dee groaned as he brought his hands up to hide his face. She chuckled. "Sorry, darling. You're right, though. He is cute." Remus flushed bright red at her words, earning a laugh from her. "Okay, okay, I'm done teasing you two," she conceded. The three stood in silence for a moment before the woman turned back to Remus. "Thank you for getting him home. It really means a lot," she said genuinely. "It's no problem at all," Remus responded. Before Dee's mother could reply, Remus' phone began to vibrate in his pocket. His face paled as he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. Remus' breathing picked up slightly as he read the caller ID. He answered the phone, bracing himself for the inevitable trouble he was going to be in.
"Remus! Where are you? Are you alright?" Logan's frantic voice came from the other side of the phone. "Y-yeah, I'm fine. I'm at Dee's house," Remus responded shakily. "What?" Logan asked, and Remus could swear he sounded angry. "I-I'm sorry, something happened and Dee was freaking out so I brought him home but I know I broke your rule and I'm so sorry," Remus rushed out as his breathing picked up. "Breathe, Remus. We can talk about this when you get home. Do you need me to come get you?" Logan asked. "N-no, Ill walk," Remus responded, not wanting to aggravate the man. Remus heard him sigh. "You don't have to walk, I can be there in a few minutes. Can you ask for the address?" Logan asked. Remus handed the phone shakily to Dee, mumbling, "Address." Dee nodded as he lifted the phone to his ear. "Hi Mr. Berry. I'm really sorry about all of this. My address is..."
Remus began to zone out. Logically, he knew that Logan wouldn't hurt him. He had made a lot of progress with his parents, and he really did trust them. In this moment, however, Remus was absolutely terrified of what the man would do to him when he got his hands on him. He had broken one of his parents' only rules. He deserved to be punished, and he knew it. That fact brought tears to Remus' eyes, his body shaking harshly. It was undeniable, he was absolutely terrified.
A few minutes later, there was a knock at the door. Remus' eyes widened as he faced the door. Dee watched him sympathetically as his mother went to answer the door. "It's going to be okay," Dee whispered. Remus didn't respond, however. His eyes were locked on Logan. The man eventually looked up at his son, motioning for him to join him. Remus swallowed harshly before approaching the man, keeping his eyes locked on the ground. Logan looked at him sadly for a moment before speaking. "We should leave now. I apologize for meeting under these circumstances," Logan said to Dee's mother. "We'll have to all meet up soon," Dee's mother added, earning a nod from Logan. "Come on Remus, lets go," Logan said, attempting to sound gentle. Remus kept his eyes down as he nodded sharply, following Logan out of the house. Dee waved slightly at him as he climbed into the car, earning a saddened look from his boyfriend. Dee watched them drive away with a heavy heart before entering his house again, shutting the door behind him.
The car ride home was tense. Remus kept his gaze downcast, refusing to look at anything except for his lap. Logan kept glancing at his son, his heart clenching at his hunched form. Finally, they pulled into the driveway and entered the house, Remus purposely staying a few steps behind Logan. Logan turned toward his son. "Why don't you go upstairs for a little bit. I'll come talk to you in a few minutes," Logan offered, earning a nod from Remus. The boy walked up the stairs quickly, not wanting to upset his father any more than he had already. Once he was upstairs, Remus turned into his parent's rooms. He knew that he was going to be punished this time. His mind was tricking him, convincing him that Logan was like his old father. He knew what was coming, and he didn't want to get himself any more hits than he had already earned. Remus' breathing was labored as he stumbled over to his Papa's drawer. He dug around frantically, finally finding what he was looking for and grabbing it with a shaking hand. He stood up and rushed to his room, wanting to get there before Logan did. He sat on the bed with the object in his hand, his eyes squeezed shut as silent tears fell down his cheeks.
A few minutes later, Logan pushed open his door carefully. He never would've expected to find his son sobbing quietly, a belt in his hand.
