Chapter Forty
Logan's heart clenched as he registered the situation before him. His own son was convinced that he would beat him. That absolutely broke Logan's heart. "Re?" Logan asked, attempting to keep his voice level. Remus' head stayed bowed as he lifted the belt toward the man. Logan let out a slightly choked sound at the gesture, his voice leaving him. After a moment, Remus spoke up in an incredibly small voice. "I'm sorry Father. Please do it quickly."
Logan was absolutely distraught, despite being acutely aware that Remus wasn't recognizing that he was his Papa, not his Father. He took a step closer to the bed, stilling as soon as Remus flinched. "Remus, I'm not going to hurt you," Logan said, his voice wavering slightly. "You should. I was bad. I deserve it," Remus stated, almost as if he were reciting a rehearsed speech. A part of Logan knew that it most likely was a speech utilized to appease his former father. Logan choked up at the thought. "No, Remus, I will not hurt you," Logan assured as he took another step forward. Remus curled further in on himself at his words. "Lying," the shaking boy mumbled. "No," Logan whispered as he finally reached the boy. Against his better judgement, Logan reached out to touch Remus' cheek lightly in an attempt to comfort him.
Remus jolted backwards, moving away from Logan as quickly as he could. "I-I'm sorry, please don't hurt me, I'm sorry," Remus sobbed out, pleading with the man before him. Logan watched his boy with wide eyes, guilt overcoming him. "Remus," Logan started as he stood. "No! Please don't hurt me! Please!" Remus yelled at the top of his lungs, looking at Logan like his was a monster. Tears filled Logan's eyes at the boy's expression. His own son was staring at him like he was the most frightening thing in existence, and it made his heart ache in the worst way. Logan wanted nothing more than to help his son, but he logically knew that in this scenario, his presence was only worsening the boy's fear. He moved as far away from the boy as he could as he pulled out his phone, dialing his husband's number.
"Please pick up, please pick up, please pick up," Logan mumbled as he listened to his phone ring. A few moments later, the line connected. "Hey Lo!" Patton said from the other side of the line. "Patton! I need your help," Logan rushed out, his desperation clear in his voice. Patton's cheery tone immediately disappeared. "What happened? Is everything okay?" he asked quickly. Before Logan could respond, Remus let out a particularly loud sob, bordering on a scream. "Was that Remus?" Patton asked frantically. "Yes! I don't know what to do, he thinks I'm his father. Pat, please, tell me what to do," Logan pleaded. "Logan, breathe. I'm almost home. Just give him a little space and make sure he doesn't hurt himself," Patton said, keeping his tone as even as he could. "Okay. Okay, I can do that," Logan said softly. "I know you can, baby. I'll be there so soon," Patton reassured before disconnecting the call. Logan pocketed his phone, looking back up at his still screaming son with a heartbroken expression.
Five minutes later, Patton rushed into the house. He immediately followed the sound of his son's screams, opening the door to his bedroom quickly. Logan's head immediately snapped up at the movement. "Patton, thank god you're here," he rushed out, his pent up tears rushing out. Patton pulled him into a fierce hug before pulling pack and cupping his face. "Logan, Im so sorry to do this, but I need you to wait outside." Logan's face dropped but he nodded, leaving the room as quickly as he could. Once the door was shut, Patton turned toward the sobbing boy. "Re?" he asked softly. Remus looked up quickly, his eyes flicking around in terror. Patton took a deep breath, steadying himself before continuing. "Remus, it's just me. It's just Dad." Remus' eyebrows furrowed as he locked his gaze on Patton. A few moments of silence passed before Remus whispered, "Dad." Patton nodded, taking a step closer to the bed. "I'm here, buddy. You're safe, I promise," Patton said softly. The sound of Remus' heavy breathing was the only sound in the room as Patton approached his son. Patton stopped a few steps in front of Remus, giving him space if he didn't want to be touched or crowded. Remus stared at him with teary eyes for a few long moments before moving forward slowly and falling into his arms, clinging to the man. Patton immediately returned the embrace, holding him close. "Dad," Remus repeated softly as he buried his face in Patton's chest. "Yes, I'm here. I've got you," Patton whispered.
Eventually, Patton's comforting words and embrace calmed the boy until he was not longer sobbing. Remus' body went limp in Patton's arms, the exhaustion from his episode finally setting in. "That took a lot out of you, huh?" Patton asked softly as he led the boy over the the bed, helping him onto the soft mattress. Patton moved to lean against the headboard, pulling Remus carefully to his chest. Remus immediately relaxed against the man, reveling in the comfort he was receiving. Minutes of comfortable silence passed before Remus began to stir. "What is it Re?" Patton asked softly. "Papa," he whimpered. Patton's heart clenched at his pitiful tone. "He's right outside. Do you want him to come in here?" Remus nodded weakly. Patton placed his hand softly over Remus' exposed ear before calling for Logan, not wanting to frighten him with his shout.
A moment later, the door opened slowly, revealing a very tearful Logan. "Oh, baby," Patton whispered. "Papa," Remus whimpered, sitting up slightly at the sight of the other man. Logan looked conflicted as he stood unmoving in the door frame. "He's been asking for you," Patton said carefully, hoping to ease his husband's worries. Logan looked stunned for a moment before nodding, moving toward the bed as carefully as he could. Once he joined Patton against the headboard, Logan sat completely still, unsure of what to do. He was broken from his worried thoughts when his son crawled into his lap, leaning against his chest. Logan let out a choked whimper at the action, wrapping his arms around the boy. Patton put his arm around Logan's shoulders, holding him close as he ran his fingers through their son's hair.
The situation wasn't ideal by any means, but Remus was going to be okay. They all were.
