Ch. 29
Logan wasn't sure he liked love.
Roman had always said love was a beautiful thing that should be enjoyed, but he once again found himself disagreeing with him.
From Logan's experience, love was terrifying.
Logan spent every day in fear of making a mistake. One slip up, and Patton would lash out at him. He never thought he would label the shorter side as scary. Perhaps naive or maybe even adorable, but never scary.
But after discovering some of Patton's more...violent tendencies, he found that "scary" was the perfect word to describe him.
Logan never took Roman for the type to enjoy this type of thing. The constant terror clawing at one's throat and making it impossible to breathe.
Then again, Roman has always been braver than Logan. Perhaps Logan didn't have enough courage to enjoy love.
He figured he should suck it up and live with it. He didn't understand what made love so enjoyable, but he had the faintest idea.
Like the few times Patton cuddled with him. Or the way Patton would always take the time to make Logan a cup of coffee every morning.
Alas, Logan felt that the bad outweighed the good.
There were two conclusions he had discovered.
One, love was a terrible thing. He shouldn't have listened to Roman.
Or two, whatever he and Patton had wasn't love at all.
The second one caused a rush of fear to overwhelm him. If this wasn't love, then what was it?
Logan had searched countless books to find the answer to this question. Finally, he found something that was very similar to his situation.
Except they didn't label it as "love".
They labelled it as "Domestic Violence".
Logan figured there had to be a mistake. Patton wasn't abusive, was he? Patton just got angry sometimes, and Logan could get used to that.
"You okay, Lo?" He heard, breaking him out of his stupor. Virgil was looking at him in mild concern.
"I'm just thinking about Roman." Logan lied. "Maybe one of us should go check on him."
"Yeah..." Virgil mumbled. "...hey, Logan?"
"Yes, Virgil?"
"Do you think we're being unreasonable?" Virgil asked, looking around to make sure Patton wasn't listening. "Like, maybe we shouldn't have jumped to conclusions? Because I always jump to conclusions, and I know that it's gotten me in so much trouble, what if--"
"I don't know, Virgil." Logan replied. "I feel like we should've taken Remus' word for it. I've felt like that the whole time."
"Then why didn't you say so when it was all going down?" Virgil asked. "I only went with it because you seemed convinced, and you've never steered me wrong before!"
Logan winced. He knew that wasn't true. A perfect example is when he made Virgil force Deceit back to the dark side of the mind palace, just so he could please Patton.
What was Logan supposed to say? That he didn't speak up because he was so desperate for the love of Patton? That he was so easily manipulated that--
Manipulated?
No, Patton wasn't manipulating him. Patton wasn't capable of doing that, was he? He was too naive to do anything like that. Logan was just being paranoid.
But as he thought about it, the more sense it made.
"Logan?" Virgil asked. Logan met his eyes. "Oh, I thought I lost you for a second."
"Do you think Patton is capable of manipulation?"
"What?" Virgil asked incredulously.
"Because I don't like where my logic is taking me and I want you to tell me I'm wrong, Virgil." Logan told him.
"But...you're rarely ever wrong, Logan." Virgil mumbled.
"Rarely! I could be wrong this time!" Logan exclaimed. "So tell me, do you think Patton is capable of manipulation?"
"...I heard him talking with Deceit during the time Remus was missing." Virgil mumbled. "He was so different. His personality flipped like a switch."
"What were they talking about?"
Virgil looked away from Logan. "A lot of things, none of it was really important. Deceit was probably just talking nonsen--"
"Virgil," Logan snapped. "What were Deceit and Patton talking about?"
Virgil swallowed. "...you. They were talking about you."
"No,"
"About how Patton was planning something with you, and that it wasn't very moral--"
"Stop. Just--stop." Logan croaked.
Logan was correct, as per usual.
He had never hated being correct so much.
---
"Patton,"
"Hmm? Oh, hey Lo-Lo!" Patton beamed. "What's up?"
"Drop the act, Patton." Logan crossed his arms. "I know you don't actually love me."
"What?" Patton asked, his eyes widening. "Wh-What do you mean, Lo?"
"At first I didn't wanna believe it. That sweet little Patton was playing me for a fool the whole time." Logan scowled.
"Logan, what are you talking about?" Patton asked, his eyes filling up with tears. "I-I love you so much--how could you accuse me of--?"
"This isn't love!" Logan snapped. "This isn't love."
"Logan, how would you know that?" Patton asked softly. "You've never felt love, remember? This is it, Logan."
"You're wrong." Logan spat, though he felt a twinge of doubt inside of himself.
"Logan, you know I'm right. I love you more than anyone else. More than Virgil, Roman, and even Thomas." Patton walked over and grabbed Logan's hands. "I love you so much, Lo."
Logan frowned. Was he wrong? Was he really just being paranoid?
No, there was no way. All the facts point to one conclusion, and that was that Logan was a fool for believing in Patton.
He took a deep breath. "Why did you and Deceit break up?"
"What?" Patton tilted his head. "I told you this, didn't I? He wanted to harm Thomas, so I didn't want to associate with him anymor--"
"Really? Then why were you talking to him when Remus was missing?" Logan asked.
Patton furrowed his brow. "I felt bad for him, so I comforted him a lot--"
"Your comfort method includes my name?"
Patton paled. "Were you spying on me?" He asked, his voice dark with anger.
Logan could tell the truth, that he had actually picked up this information from Virgil. He could, but all the anger he was detecting off of Patton made him think it was a bad idea.
"I just happened to hear it while I was walking." Logan lied, narrowing his eyes.
Patton laughed. "And you still went along with me anyway? Because you wanted my love? You pathetic little--" Patton took a deep breath. "You've got it all wrong, Logan."
"I don't think I do." Logan hissed. "So I ask you again, why did you and Deceit break up?"
Patton scowled. "I told you. He wanted to harm Thomas, so I got rid of him."
"No, you said you didn't associate with him anymore."
"That's the same thing!"
"It really isn't." Logan shook his head. "If I recall correctly, Deceit went over to the dark side of the mind palace covered in bruises." Logan swallowed, not liking where his deduction was taking him.
"He was attacked by Romulus after I told him what Deceit had done." Patton replied, though Logan could tell he didn't seem confident in that answer.
"Really? Because I was there when you told Romulus that, remember? And Romulus stayed right by your side and watched movies with us until he fell asleep and we took him back to his room."
"Are you calling me a liar, Logan?" Patton sneered. "Because if you are--"
"I'm not calling you a liar, because I don't need to." Logan spat. "You already make it painfully obvious without me having to call you--"
Patton punched Logan in the face.
A/N:
The book is ending soon, and I leave the decision of if I should make a sequel in your hands.
