Chapter Four
Humans didn't get the upper hand against my kind because they were stronger than us. They didn't get it because they were faster than us, more skilled, or anything of the physical sort. They got it because they were smarter and had, or used, more resources than the werewolves. Our species never focused or depended on modern technology like the mortals did. We were content with using whatever resources that were naturally available and already created for us by the earth and the Goddesses above. We would manipulate wood and metal to our liking to create our weapons but that was as far as we would go. On the other hand, humans created things from thin air. They would be given a knife and then turn it into a gun. It was incredible.
They also weren't afraid of consequences. One of their advancements meant several drawbacks for whomever or whatever was involved. But, they didn't care. As long as they got what they wanted in that moment that was all that mattered. Complications were dealt with later. They were selfish, that's probably why they've survived on this planet for so long. Werewolves respected everything around them. We tried to only manipulate the land under us whenever we absolutely needed to. Any meat we ate was only for bare survival, never for luxury. There was no point in killing several animals just to sate a greedy appetite. That kind of behavior was frowned upon immensely by our society. Every action we made or resource we took was done after thinking about its affects on us, itself, and its importance. We were thoughtful and caring creatures. Something the humans clearly didn't believe.
The mortals designed weapons and machinery that were made to kill us quickly and effectively. They were quick and lethal and took little effort to maneuver. Every weapon made against werewolves had wolfsbane mixed into it. Without that plant any weapon was useless against us. Their most famous weapons was the Psi. It was as thin as a strand of hair and as long as a newborn baby's hand. Since the Psi was so thin it was basically unavoidable, you could try to dodge it but it was almost impossible. The Psi was attracted to the presence of a werewolf the way that a magnet was attracted to metal. You couldn't get away from it once it was aimed towards you. They were used like bullets and would shoot from a specially made gun. Aim had to be precise for the Psi to be at its most lethal potential. The aim was always for a werewolves heart, if that wasn't achievable then between the eyes was fine. When the Psi was introduced to werewolf blood it exploded. The encasing around it would evaporate and pure wolfsbane toxin would be released almost instantly. Once this was done and the poison touched the werewolf's heart, or brain, death was inevitable. It was an extraordinary weapon indeed, very impressive. If a human had that weapon the chance of surviving a fight with them was close to none. And, I was sure every knowledgeable mortal always had a Psi with them. It was the smart thing to do and guaranteed absolute protection against us 'savage beasts'.
But, I didn't care. I was going to go after them whether they had a Psi or not. If they didn't then it was better for me. An easier kill. Without their toys humans were no match to me. I could snap their neck within a second, before they could even blink.
But, I was getting too excited. I was only two feet away from my school and already I was thinking about getting the blood of a mortal on my hands. It wasn't time for that, not yet. First, I had to fin d the headquarters. I had heard about it at school and from the Elders in my pack. The humans had a huge piece of land somewhere far away that held hundreds of werewolves and was the grounds for almost all their research and creation of their advanced weaponry. If I was able to get there I could free all of the werewolves trapped there and destroy everything they created. It sounded simple in my head but I knew this would be a long and hard trip. I didn't even know where the headquarters was; finding that out was going to be hard enough.
I lived in the south of America and I knew the Headquarters' was somewhere near the west. It was a hidden location but with the amount of werewolves it held, finding it couldn't be that hard once I was at least 100 miles close to it. Werewolves had a peculiar scent, one that differed from other animals. Humans didn't know about witches enough to know that they could mask our scent if they wanted to. So, the werewolves were probably held their without any spell to disguise them. One werewolf's scent was strong; the scent of hundreds of them couldn't be missed even if I tried to.
My plan wasn't much and needed to be elaborated some more but it was enough for now. I was going on a whim, I knew this, but it was the best I could do in that moment. My mind was still fixed on the fact that my pack could possibly dead, any evidence of them destroyed. It was tradition to burn the remains of dead werewolves and the places they lived if they weren't going to be used for research. My home could be mere ashes in a couple of hours for all I knew. My anger and rage was rising once again just at the thought. I hated humans with all my heart and I will forever hate them for what they have done to my people, my parents.
Within twenty minutes I had walked the distance from my school to the border of the forest using human walking speed. They was still some mortals around me and I couldn't risk them catching me using my natural speed, a simple run for us werewolves, in our human form, was faster than the cars the mortals used as transportation. When we were in our wolf form we were even faster. I couldn't remember exactly how fast I was in my wolf form, though. The last time I shape shifted was when I was eight. The body of my wolf had become foreign to me.
Stepping off the sidewalk I walked off of its alignment and onto the grass next to it. I continued this walk down the hill that followed until my feet no longer touched grass but just muddy dirt. In front of me stood tall trees filled with vibrant green leaves. Their branches were strong and long and created almost a sheet of dark covering above me. The deeper I got into the trees the less sunlight I was able to see.
The faint sound of a fallen branch cracking, as if something had stepped on it, reached my ears and I froze mid stride. Someone's following me. I thought to myself, looking around through the trees and and dirt to see if I could catch the glimpse of a body. But I saw none and heard no more noise apart from the chirping of the birds and bugs and the wind brushing through the leaves. Other than that it was quiet. Sighing, I decided that I was probably imagining things due to my nerves. What I was planning on doing wasn't the job for one werewolf but yet I was going to try to do it all by myself. Failure was a high possibly. But my determination was stronger than my fear of not succeeding. I would do this.
I got deeper and deeper into the woods until I was no longer able to see the location at which where I had come from. I was completely hidden inside the forest, and I was alone. My journey had officially started and I was beyond ready. Nothing and no one could stop me now. If they tried they were sure to die and I would kill them without any mercy.
Closing my eyes I focused all of my attention on my nose, looking for the scent of rosemary in the air. Every werewolf in my pack had hidden a bag of necessities deep in the woods. They picked any chosen scent to cover it with so that when we needed to find then bag it wouldn't be difficult. I had chosen the scent of rosemary since I knew it was my mother's favorite. There was no way I could miss that smell so it was guaranteed for me to fin d the bag, even if it had been moved. But luckily it wasn't and I found it buried in the roots of a thick tree. Extending my finger nails into thick claws I used them to dig into the dirt beneath me. My fingers soon began to get irritated from the abuse I was committing them too but I didn't care. The rough texture of rocks and wood was a mere obstacle compared to what I would soon to face.
Finally my hand brushed plastic instead of dirt and I let out a puff of air filled with triumph. Grunting I pulled the bag through the small hole I created, pushing through more dirt on my way up. The book bag wasn't huge but it was big enough to hold what I needed and still travel with. It was perfect for my upcoming journey. After placing the black bag that was covered in a garbage bag down next to me I reached down into the hole again hoping to find another bag left but I was left emptyhanded.
Hope swirled within me and I fought back the smile that wanted to come to my face. Dominic had placed his bag with mine when we had first hidden them. He wasn't supposed to, and I told him jot to, but he did it anyway because he was annoying and defiant. But, his bag wasn't in the hole, it wasn't under mine, meaning that he had taken it. This meant that he might be alive, he might've gotten away. If Dominic had managed to escape that meant that maybe other members of my pack had too.
"Thank you, Moon Goddess." I whispered in gratitude before standing up and brushing the dirt off of my hands. Opening the garbage bag I pulled out my book bag and unzipped it, checking to see if everything was still there. And sure enough it was, everything looked to be in the same condition I had left it in five years ago. Taking out a hair elastic I pulled my thick curls up into a bun at the bottom of my head. I couldn't have it getting in my way and distracting me. Stripping off the t-shirt and jeans I wore I pulled out black leggings and a matching tank top, this was more durable and comfortable clothing and was exactly what I needed. Quickly changing my clothes I had finished in no time and was back on my trek through the woods.
Night had fallen quickly and I was soon surrounded by complete darkness. This was no issue for me as I was able to see through the darkness easily. The only issue was the presence of hunters. I knew they went through the woods at night to check for rogue wolves such as me. And if one found me, well... I would have to fight.
Almost as if I had wished the thought into existence I heard the sound of several heart beats not far from me. Then I heard the voices, there was a group of them about twenty feet away. Maybe about four hunters. Excitement and fear raced through my veins as I continued to walk west. I wasn't going to seek out them, if they wanted me they would find me.
"There's movement being detected over there. I believe we've caught one." A deep voice grumbled hastily. His tone was rushed and breathy, he was either excited or tired. I couldn't tell which one. "We don't have any more Psi's just the bullets so we have to make do. It's four against one, boys. This should be quick. Understood." Voices of agreement followed and there was silence again. I no longer felt any fear and only thrill. I knew they were advancing towards me and I purposefully walked slower because of this. Tonight was going to be my first human kill and I couldn't wait. Images of kicking off their heads and pulling their hearts out from their chest graced my head and I built my lip to contain the rush of energy I was currently experiencing.
It took twenty minutes for the first bullet to rush towards me and having heard it before it was even close to me I easily avoided it. Cowards. They weren't even close to me, they were all hiding behind the stems of the trees and the bushes surround me. They wanted to play hide and seek. I was very good at that game.
Jumping onto the trunk of a tree near me I ran up the rough exterior with great speed until I was high enough to which I could throw myself and swing my arms onto a branch above me. Twisting my body around I situated myself so that my feet rested on the thick branch and my body was in a squat, my hands gripped the branch I rested on for stability. Looking down, I registered that I was only ten feet above the forest floor. It wasn't far but it was a great enough distance for the hunters to not be able to reach me or see me. I kept my body completely still and watched the ground from above. I was winning this game so far.
"Where'd it go? It's not showing up on the tracker anymore." One of the men said frantically, his heart beat had sped up considerably. He was scared. He should be. The lycan blood that ran through me was showing itself in that moment. I wanted to tear each limb from their bodies. I wanted to rip their throats out with my teeth. I wanted to feel their blood against my skin as I ravaged them. In conclusion, I wanted them dead.
"Fucking wolf. We don't need the damn tracker. We'll find it and we'll kill the son of a bitch." The leader declared angrily and then I heard a bustle of movement. I smirked as they all easily fell into the trap I had set for them. They had quickly come out of hiding once they took note of my disappearance and all four of their bodies were easily visible. I waited till they were all huddled close together right under me before jumping from the branch. Air passed through me as I came down and only stopped once I landed on top of one of the hunter's shoulders. Before they could even comprehend the fact that I was amongst them I reached down and grasped the man's head between my hands. Twisting, I felt the bones in his neck crack before I ripped his head from his body. Warm liquid immediately splattered all over me and I gasped at the shock of it. Blood. I jumped off the body as it began to fall and looked down at myself in disbelief. His blood was all over me. I had just killed him. Guilt began to consume and I was confused at the emotion. I wanted this, I wanted them dead. And besides, he was trying to kill me too. It was a good thing that I had gotten to him first. I shouldn't feel guilty. They obviously didn't care about my life so I wasn't about to start caring about theirs.
Throwing the unidentified man's head at his coworker I charged towards the other three men. Two of them cursed lowly as they fidgeted with their guns. But I didn't have time for that. I wasn't going to waste my time healing from a wolfsbane injury when I had more important things to take care of. That wouldn't do. Grasping the wrist of the two men that held the offending items, I twisted them before somersaulting and opening my legs mid air to kick both bodies away from me with full force. I felt my feet hit their chest with great force and the crack of bones accompanied the assault. Since my hands had stayed gripping onto their wrist when their bodies flew across the forest they had left without their arm. Two dismembered limbs dangled at my side when I was back on my feet and I dropped them to the ground in disgust. If they didn't die from loss of blood then they would die from the pressure I had placed on their chest and the ribs I most likely broke. I was sure at least one organ was injured because of that.
There was only one hunter left and he was looking at me with pure terror. My eyes were the blinding gold of my wolf as I approached him. He looked into them intensely the closer I got to his shivering form. He was mesmerized by my orbs. His body was frozen but yet his lips were pursed and his eyebrows furrowed into a glare. It was amazing how he was two seconds away from his death but yet the hate he had for me still stayed as strong as ever. Incredible.
"Hit me." I dared him and he was brave enough to actually raise his hand towards me. Without hesitation I punched him in his chest, my fist going past the restrictions of his rib cage, past his lungs and through the muscles inside his back. Eventually my fist had gone through his layers of skin and my hand was met with the coolness of the air once again. Pulling out my hand just as quick as I punched it through I watched as the man's eyes widened in shock and pain. He was no longer glaring at me. I wondered why. He wouldn't die instantly, but he would die. And it would be torturous. The act was savage and merciless, just like he expected. I wasn't known to disappoint in anything I did.
The last body fell in front of me and I stepped back to look at the mess I just made. Two bloody arms laid on the dirt near me, a handgun in each gloved hand. I reached and removed the fingers from around the weapon before picking them up and placing them into my backpack. Just because the bullets were laced with wolfsbane didn't mean that it could only be used against werewolves. The bodies that belonged to the arms should be somewhere far away from me, unless it had been stopped by the trunk of one of the many trees. Then it may lay close by. Next to the two arms was the beheaded man from earlier. His blood was still squirting from some major artery and I wondered when the blood would stop flowing. Looking in front of me and then down I stared at my last kill. This man was bleeding too, his eyes were still open wide and quick desperate gasps left his mouth in gurgles because of the blood rushing into his punctured lung. He was suffering.
The vengeful part of me wanted to leave him like this but I knew that was wrong. I wasn't them, I was not a monster. I wouldn't make him die like this. Crouching down I gently grasped the sides of the man's face. His skin was hot and sweaty underneath my palms. After closing his eyes with my thumbs I jerked his head quickly, snapping it in the process. His death was now instant; he no longer had to wait.
Wiping the remaining blood off my hands and onto my leggings I stood up straight again. They were all dead; there was no longer a reason to be standing there. I needed to continue in the direction I was going prior to my interruption; west.
Just as I was about to continue my walk another crack sounded through the air. Listening to everything around me I zoned in on the sound of a heart beat and of something breathing. It wasn't the heart beat of one of the animals that lived in the forest and it most definitely wasn't the breathing of one of them. It was another hunter, it had to be. Growling in annoyance I turned towards where I heard the nose and ran in the direction. This time I would chase. I had things to do and these mortals were becoming an annoying distraction. I still wasn't using my natural speed as I ran towards the hunter because I felt that I didn't need to. That was a waste of energy. It only took me fifteen seconds to kill the four hunters before. This next kill should only take five.
I felt the heat of a new body next to me and stopped running. Quickly I turned and reached my arm out, lunging forward I grabbed the mortal by the throat. I was ready to squeeze, thus ending his life, but something stopped me. For some reason I had suddenly decided to think before doing and took the time to actually look at who I was about to kill. Before I could even register his face his powerful scent hit me. I was no longer blinded by the metallic odor of the blood that was all over me as I let the new aroma take over. Pine, husk, salt- Aurelius!
"Have you been following me this whole time," I whisper yelled at the idiot in front of me. He was already making the situation even more dangerous for me just by being in the woods. If another hunter ended up finding me, Aurelius would be the only one to blame.
"Um, yes?" Aurelius was wary of my reaction, and he had every right to be. He was a mere human and seemed to be trying to tease death. He had no clue that I was someone that he should be trying to kill right now. In his head I was another human who was just caught doing something quite sketchy- something he didn't understand but was very curious to find out.
"You realize you can't go back home now." I informed him seriously. "It's either you die by my hands, theirs, or you continue to follow me. We're in too deep now for you to survive alone." There was a mischievous glint in his eye, as if he knew something I did not. Which wasn't possible. The witches spell had completely masked any physical sign that may alert to the fact that I wasn't mortal. And he couldn't survive in the woods alone. No mortal could unless they were a trained hunter. I was sure that he wasn't even though he wanted be.
"I will stay by your side." I paused as I calculated his words. The sincerity in his voice and the strength in his gaze left me feeling uneasy. Nonetheless I accepted his declaration, let go of my grip on his throat, and took a quiet step back.
"Let's go."
