Chapter 1
On a Friday in the summer, an eight-year-old girl was skipping up to a traditional Japanese house. The little girl had short black hair that stopped at her shoulders; bangs that covered her forehead and pink eyes. She was wearing a pink short-sleeved skull shirt, a blue skirt, and shoes with cat socks that went up to the calves. She stopped at the door, giving it a knock to the tune of Teen Titans (Original). The door swung open revealing a woman with long white hair and grey eyes. Rei Todoroki the mother of the girl's best friend, is holding a baby boy with half-white hair and half-red hair. He had one grey eye and one turquoise hair.
"Hey, Ms. T!" greeted the girl rocking back on her heels. "Hey little Shoto." Ever since Shoto was born, Moegi was given the task of babysitting him from time to time.
"Come on in Moegi," said Rei Todoroki stepping to the side. "Toya should be in his room."
"Thanks, Ms. T!" chimed Moegi entering the building; she slipped off her shoes before skipping down the hallway. She went down the hall; then stopped in front of it, once again knocking to the tune of Teen Titans.
"Come in Moegi!" called Toya. With her quirk, Moegi stepped through the door to see a boy with white spiked hair and turquoise eyes fixing his socks. He used to have red hair; then went through some weird changes and his hair turned white, with streaks of red; she teased him heavily about getting old when they were five. Along with the fact she was taller than him. Moegi's quirk was called Ecto-Ghost; she can produce ectoplasm from her body. She can also do a couple of things ghosts can do such as be intangible or turn invisible. If Moegi is touching someone or a thing; she can make that thing intangible or invisible. Though that takes a lot of energy; makes her a bit lightheaded, and she tends to replenish her energy with orange juice.
"Hurry up, Toya," urged Moegi sitting in his rolling chair. Moegi and Toya had been best friends since preschool; she punched him in the face after he had pushed her off the swing. A small brawl between two four years old; a trip to the principal's office ended when they bonded together through friendship. At the age of five, they had begun racing to and from school on their bikes. They both had the same dream of going to UA and becoming heroes together.
Toya looked at her oddly. "It's summer what are you in a hurry for?"
"The haunted house sign-up list is going to fill up fast," said Moegi crossing her arms.
"I need to focus on my training," said Toya opening the door. "Then perhaps I'll get my father to notice me." He turned around just for Moegi to grab his nipple through his shirt with her quirk and twist it. "OW!" He hunched over clenching his chest.
"Stupid head this is quirk training," said Moegi retracting her hand. "The haunted house is a small loophole to using our quirks, under loads of supervision of course." Moegi and Toya always had a lot of ideas; not all of them were good, and it got them in trouble half of the time. They did have a lot of fun with them. Toya slowly looked up at her; slowly he smiled with stars in his eyes.
"That's brilliant, Moe!" chimed Toya standing up straight.
"What are you two up to?" asked a small voice; they both looked to see a boy with white spiky hair with two strands that hung down the middle of his forehead and grey eyes. Natsuo Todoroki; was a three at the time and had the biggest crush on Moegi.
"We are just hanging out," said Toya. "We are heading to the park at some point."
"We'll bring you back some candy," said Moegi as they stepped out of the room.
"Cotton Candy," said Natsu grabbing onto Toya's hand. Toya and Moegi looked at each other and nodded. "Where's Fuyumi?"
"She's probably in the kitchen," said Toya with a smile. After grabbing their shoes, in no time they two were outside and at the sign-ups for the haunted house. It was located in a small street festival going on; there were a ton of vendors and games.
"There it is!" exclaimed Moegi taking Toya's wrist; she dragged him over to the stand.
"HEY! SLOW DOWN!" exclaimed Toya as his other arm flared around. They skidded to a stop in front of both with skulls and crossbones on the top.
"Two brats," said the man at the other side of the table; he was missing a tooth in the front. "Did you get lost?"
"No," denied Toya. "We want to sign up."
"Sign up?" the man repeated with a laugh; he looked down at his list. "I got room, but not for two kiddos like you."
"We got what it takes," said Moegi putting her hands on the table. "Honest!"
"And I got two houses in Miami," said the man, the two kids looked at each other and shrugged. "It's called lying!"
"We aren't lying!" denied Toya and Moegi at the same time. "Please!"
"Alright," said the man holding up his hands. "Before you go crying to your mamas, show me what you got."
"Right!" the two kids nodded. Moegi grabbed Toya's arm making it go invisible; then Toya used his arm to make a fireball. "So, you can turn invisible, and he can make fire?"
"Hellfire to be more specific," corrected Toya extinguishing his flame. "And Moe can make herself and others intangible."
The man looked at his list. "Alright, alright, I'll give you two a chance." They looked at each other happily. "But if I hear any complaints about the work being hard or something stupid you two are out."
"Got it!" they responded looking back at the man.
"As for your names?" asked the man holding up the clipboard.
Toya pointed at himself. "I'm Toya Todoroki and this is my best friend Moegi Morikawa."
"Best friends," the man repeated with a kind smile.
After signing up, Toya and Moegi spent more time on the street playing games; they even won a small handheld camera. Then went up to Sekoto Peak to do more training per Toya's request. Toya's quirk tends to hurt him; he always pushes off Moegi's concerns.
"Your arms are smoking, Toya," said Moegi observing his arms.
"Just like the rest of the women in my family," grunted Toya. "Weak." In a flash, Moegi had smacked Toya so hard across the face, he spun twice before landing with his butt in the air. "I'm sorry."
Moegi stood over him with her arms crossed. "Don't ever think about speaking to me like that again."
"I'm sorry," repeated Toya lifting his head a bit. "Truly sorry."
In the end, Moegi and Toya were invited to do the haunted house every year. They walked through the walls together while holding hands; they would say that 'come play with us' line and then create a fireball in his other hand. Sometimes, Toya would be a child running and screaming through the floor they were designated to, and he would fall, while invisible, Moegi would grab him and vastly pull him through a door, slamming the door shut afterward.
One time while they were on break, Moegi was sipping on some tea and Toya happily ate some dango.
"Toya," said Moegi looking at him, he looked at her. "We are going to be friends forever, right?"
"That's got to be the stupidest of stupid that's ever come out your mouth," said Toya waving his stick at her. "You are my very best friend, and we will remain best friends forever."
As for the camera, the two ended up setting up their own YouTube channel called Mori and Roki. They did things such as competitions or skits, a lot of the time they would invite Natsu and Fuyumi as well; and once in a while Shoto. Their skits would include reenactments of scenes such as The Lion King or beauty pageants. Moegi's second desire in life if the hero thing didn't work out was to become a fashion designer.
9-year-old Moegi and Toya are recording while in the bathroom with Natsu and Fuyumi.
"Since Natsu lost, we'll be shaping his eyebrow," said Toya as Moegi put the wax on Natsu's eyebrow area.
"Are you sure this is a good idea?" asked Fuyumi.
"We got everything under control," said Moegi looking at Fuyumi. "Okay, so we got the first stripped laid, and one of us will yank it off."
"Smile Natsu," said Toya grabbing hold of the paper.
"On the count of 3," said Moegi holding a fist. "One—" She lifted her pointer finger and Toya ripped the strip off.
"OW!" yelped Natsu grabbing his head, Toya's eyes went wide looking at the strip and showed it to Moegi; her eyes went wide. "How is it Fuyumi?" He looked at her.
"Your eyebrows gone," said Fuyumi putting a finger to her mouth.
"WHAT!?" yelped Natsu jolting to his feet. Toya and Moegi started laughing. "ITS NOT FUNNY!" This made the two laugh even harder.
When they were 10, Moegi was spending the night at Todoroki's house; her mom was out for the weekend as normal. Moegi's mom was a massage therapist; she would travel out of town on weekends for gigs; so, she would spend the night at Todoroki's. By the age of 10; after teasing Natsu so much for his crush, Toya developed a bit of a crush on his best friend; she was oblivious to it. She babysat Shoto more; and even helped with potty training; Natsu would find an excuse to hang back with Moegi when she babysat.
Moegi and Toya were currently at a table doing homework together at 6 pm.
"Toya," said a voice; they looked over to see a giant-built man with red hair; Endeavor. The man that lit an unextinguishable fire in Toya; Moegi wasn't a big fan of him, and Endeavor wasn't a big fan of her. "Moegi; time for dinner." After dinner, Toya and Moegi were playing the hands slap game.
"I got a brilliant idea," said Toya quickly moving his hands.
"Your brilliant ideas normally land us in the principal's office," said Moegi hitting his hands on her next try.
"Harsh," huffed Toya as they switched. "I know exactly how to get my father to take more notice of me! To look at me!" Moegi looked up at him. "Let's steal his car." Moegi looked up at him bizarrely as Toya landed a hit. "With your quirk; we can get it out of the garage with ease; and I have orange juice."
"Do you even know how to drive?" asked Moegi tilting her head.
"I play Grand Theft Auto," said Toya as he grabbed her hands. "How much more different could it be?"
"Can you even touch the pedals?" asked Moegi leaning forward. "Shorty."
Toya's eyes twitched. "I grabbed a pair of my mom's high-heeled boots for a reason." Moegi started laughing. "We strike at 9 pm." Moegi nodded in agreement. As agreed around 9 pm; Moegi used her quirk to grab Endeavor's keys, then to get her and Toya into the garage. She was staring at the car hesitantly.
"Chickening out, spook girl?" asked Toya putting his hands on his hips.
"I've just never turned anything this big intangible before," admitted Moegi putting her hand behind her head. "I'm doubting I can."
"You can," scoffed Toya leaning on the car.
Moegi looked at him oddly. "But I've never done it before."
Toya slapped a hand onto her shoulder and smiled. "There's no time like the present. Moe Bear." Moegi just rolled her eyes; she stared at the car before putting her hands on it. It took a total of ten minutes with the combined effort of her and Toya to push the car through the garage door; at the end, Moegi was on the ground panting. "No time to rest." He opened an orange juice bottle handing it to her. "We can even make this one of our YouTube channels."
"What would we call it Ghost Rider?" asked Moegi before gulping orange juice.
Toya waved his hand. "We'll figure out those details later."
(1hr and a half later)
At the Todoroki house, Endeavor was watching the news with Natsu and Rei. The news was covering a high-speed car chase.
"Nothing but idiots," grumbled Endeavor squinting his eyes.
Natsu squinted his eyes at the screen. "Isn't that your car?"
Endeavor stared at the screen harder; his beard lit on fire. "WHAT?!" He jolted to his feet; and ran to the garage throwing the door open. "WE HAVE BEEN ROBBED!" Endeavor ended up having to go to All Might's hero agency due to Toya and Moegi crashing the car there. They kept successfully avoiding the cops with the help of Moegi's quirk, though they did fight over the steering wheel while in the same seat. Moegi and Toya were not allowed to see each other for a week. Over the years, Toya had cried to Moegi about Endeavor in the same way he cried to Natsu.
At 11 years old Toya had finally become taller than Moegi. He held it over her for months; he was heavy on calling her shorty. As they trained more, mainly at night. Toya's flames started to turn blue. Going from hellfire to blue flames; Moegi's quirk grew stronger as well, but nothing with changes like that.
"Look!" shouted Toya, staring at the flaming coming off of his chest. "Just as I told you, they are turning blue!"
Moegi walked over to him putting her hands out. "They are hotter too." Toya looked at her, he had tears in his eyes due to his anger towards his father.
"Well, you should probably do some practice controlling them," advised Moegi turning around.
"I have enough control," said Toya wiping his eyes, he watched her go over to her backpack.
"I'll be the judge of that," confirmed Moegi pulling out a bag of marshmallows and a stick. "You get to eat all extremely burnt ones."
"That's not fair!" argued Toya stomping toward her.
"Then don't burn them," said Moegi looking at him.
One night during a sleepover at 12.
"The problem is Endeavor not Shoto," said Toya pulling at his hair.
"I'm glad you are finally wise enough to move on from that stupid idea that a five year who can't even count to 10 yet, is the problem," said Moegi. Whenever Moegi would babysit Shoto; sometimes he would cry to her about not wanting to be like Endeavor; not wanting to be mean and scary; and someone that hurts others.
"Take this seriously, Moe," said Toya putting his head on his hand. "These are my feelings."
"It's 3 am," said Moegi looking at him. "You should invest in a diary."
"I'm not writing my feelings in some stupid Burn Book," said Toya looking at his nails. In seconds they both had light bulbs above their head. "Hold on." A couple of minutes later, Moegi and Toya sat around a blank-page book.
"Endeavor," said Moegi as she glued a picture of him on a page.
"Enji Todoroki, aka Endeavor," began Toya; he was writing underneath the picture. "Neglects his kids, abuses his family, and is a stupid controlling fire freak that picks his nose."
"And eats it," said Natsu poking his head in.
"And eats it," repeated Toya. "Let's put Shoto." Natsu crawled into the room.
"He's five," Moegi pointed at him.
"Just put him down," said Toya, she put her hands up.
"There," said Moegi putting Shoto on the next page.
"Can't skip," said Toya as he wrote that under the youngest picture.
"Let me put something under Dad," said Natsu taking the pen from Toya.
When Moegi was 13, Rei got sent away to the hospital after pouring boiling water on Shoto's voice. Endeavor had broken this woman, pushed her past her breaking point, and now is locking her away.
"I'm sorry about your mom," said Moegi to Toya; it was late they were at the park at the swing.
"It's that bastard's fault," said Toya wiping his eyes. "It's his fault. She's going to get better in no time."
Moegi studied with him. "Something else on your mind?"
"I said some pretty harsh things to my mom, and I can't even go and apologize right now," said Toya kicking at the ground. "I don't know what to do, I feel so guilty."
"Hm," said Moegi looking up at the sky. "Can you write to her?"
"I'd rather do it in person," said Toya.
Moegi looked back at him. "Then apologize when you see her again; make it a good one and mean every word." Toya nodded.
Not too long after that Moegi had gotten struck down with a bad sinus infection and was stuck in bed.
"Toya," said Moegi on the phone.
"You still sound sick," laughed Toya on the other side of the phone. "After some training; I'll bring you some soup to help you get better."
"But you could be at the risk of getting sick," said Moegi stuffing a tissue up her nose.
"Sinus infections aren't contagious stupid," said Toya. "I'll see you tomorrow, I love you."
"I love you too," said Moegi.
That night Moegi was up in bed reading a book she had read many times. She got ripped out of her page when she heard lots of fire truck sirens. She got on her knees and peeked out the window to see a large fire happening in the distance; it was in the direction of Sekoto Peak; a sick feeling dropped in her stomach. She could not sleep all morning; by the time morning came. Moegi received news about Toya dying; consumed by his flames. Moegi collapsed crying on the ground and grew sicker right when she was on the bend of getting better. Moegi's mom took off work to stay back and comfort Moegi for a week. Moegi never went back to school after Toya died. After Toya's funeral, Moegi's mom had decided for them to move. Moegi's mom thought moving would help Moegi get better, but the pain of losing her best friend would always remain. The age of 13 was the last time anything got posted on the Mori and Roki YouTube channel.
