From a dizzying height she looked down unafraid

it was here she performed for what she was paid

the heat from the confines and the smell of the canvass

all of the features one finds in a circus

now combined with an audience impatient and boisterous

She gripped the trapeze and swung out in an arc

executing gymnastics so high in the dark

'til the spotlight secured her and she heard the crowd gasp

as the somersault finished and she lost her grasp

time seemed suspended, her body felt weightless

Then it all became real, the identified threat

that she was performing this time with no safety net
