Chapter 7

Edited - June 6

"Come on, Macaw," Peacemaker whispered, jolting Macaw awake.

"Whayoudoingupsoearly," Macaw mumbled, her talons batting at Peacemaker.

"I can't sleep," Peacemaker replied, bouncing on his talons. "Let's go explore the library! Ooh, maybe we can take a peek at The Book of Clearsight!"

Macaw looked astonished. "We can't do that!" she cried, leaping up. "The book is the most sacred thing on this continent! Imagine if we get caught!"

Peacemaker covered her mouth with his talon. "Shush. We won't get caught," he reassured. "Come on. Besides, no one will get hurt."

Macaw hesitantly followed him. "Alright. But I'm coming because I don't want you to go alone, not because I want to," she said firmly.

Peacemaker rolled his eyes but nodded. He peeked outside and flew silently to the entrance of the hive.

"Shoot, there's guards," Peacemaker muttered. "Maybe I can knock them out."

"No!" Macaw seized his talon. "You said no one will get hurt, remember?" she pleaded. Then her gaze was serious.

Peacemaker sighed. "Fine. But we can go spy on the other cabins!" he said.

Macaw sighed again. "Why are you like this?" she muttered to herself as she launched off after Peacemaker.

Peacemaker gazed at the stars overhead. Glittering. "Shhh!" he suddenly halted, almost making Macaw crash into him.

"What?" she asked tentatively.

"Tsunami, Moon, Webs, and Clay are awake," Peacemaker said. "Let's go spy on them!" he said excitedly, dropping silently onto the ground. Peacemaker folded his wings as she began to pick up some of the words.

"...was a close one," Webs muttered. "Could have...Peacemaker..."

Macaw looked startled. Peacemaker shrugged and moved closer, hiding behind a bush.

Tsunami popped a grape in her mouth as Moon opened her jaws, breathing out a burst of flame and relighting the fire.

"It's fine, Darkstalker's gone," Tsunami said, chewing. "Peacemaker's a whole other dragon."

"Are you sure?" Clay asked. "Remember how Peacemaker reacted when Luna showed us the Book?"

Tsunami shrugged, but she looked worried. "What was the spell Kinkajou did?" she asked.

"I enchant this scroll to erase Darkstalkers memory and powers, and turn into a newborn dragon, named Peacemaker, with rainbow flecks on his wings," Clay recited.

Tsunami nodded. "See? Nothing's missing," she said. Silence. "Yes, Tsunami, you're always right," she prompted.

Webs sighed. "Yes, Tsunami, you're always right," he said through gritted teeth, and Tsunami nodded pleasantly.

"Alright, now that that's covered, I can go back to sleep," Tsunami said. "Come on, Webs, we're going into the river."

"Go, go, go," Macaw whispered. "We can't be caught." She changed colors and disappeared, with a faint ripple telling where Macaw was. Peacemaker flew back.

Peacemaker paced in the small room. "Darkstalker? Who the heck is that?" he asked himself.

"Probably some evil guy," Macaw said, her nose buried under her tail. "Maybe you are his son, or something."

That jolted Peacemaker. That's why Mom never talked about him. But, why?

"Maybe," he just said. He stared at his wings. "But–what if it's a RainWing? That would explain why I have these scales?"

Macaw shrugged, and closed her eyes. "Who knows. I'm trying to get some shut eye, so go skedaddle somewhere else," she said.

"Yeah, sure," he said.

I need to see that book, Peacemaker thought. He spread his wings and flew back to the Library.

He snuck into the entrance and saw a HiveWing guard.

"Who goes there?" the HiveWing said gruffly.

"I-I'm Peacemaker, I want to check out the library," he stuttered.

The HiveWing nodded. "One of the guests from the Distant Kingdoms, right? Alright. You can go in. Just holler if you need something. The Librarian is there, too."

Peacemaker nodded and hurried into the library.

"Hey, it's early to be up," the Librarian said. She wore hexagonal glasses and flashed a smile. "I'm Cricket."

"Hi," Peacemaker said quietly. "C-can I see the Book of Clearsight?"

Cricket laughed. "A curious one! Well, you know what. Maybe a few pages." She took off the key hanging from her necklace and unlocked the wooden case and pulled out an ancient looking book.

The first few pages were neatly arranged, and full of prophecies. But a few pages in, the writing became more frantic, and sloppy. The ends were blank, but one prophecy about the trees.

"Thank you," Peacemaker whispered, handing the book back to Cricket who locked the book back into the safe.

"Anytime." Cricket smiled. "Hey, you should get back. The HiveWings are starting to wake up." She gave her a warm smile, pushing her glasses up.

Peacemaker nodded.
