Basic and Twi'leki

The next day Hera returned to the market. She checked the shop for droid parts, but it was still closed. Hera found herself buying another packet of food and walking down the street towards Kanan. He was there, just as he had been yesterday. A small part of the food had been eaten, but not all of it.

"You came back," Kanan said in a slightly surprised voice. He stood up.

"Of course," Hera replied. "You didn't leave."

"Where would I go?" Kanan pointed out. "How much Basic do you know?"

"I can greet people," Hera listed. "I can introduce myself. I can ask most questions. And I can hold a conversation."

"Seems like you're pretty proficient," Kanan said.

"I never had an official teacher," Hera admitted.

"I'm starting to think there's nothing I can teach you," Kanan told her thoughtfully.

"Maybe I can teach you Twi'leki," Hera offered. Kanan laughed.

"This was a way for me to repay you for the food," he reminded her. "I'll just have to find some other way to repay you."

"You used to be in the republic, right?" Hera asked. She noticed that Kanan stiffened slightly as she mentioned it. "Did you fight in the war?"

"Yeah," he said, looking at his hands. Hera noticed the bandages for the first time. They completely wrapped his hands, and were covered in a layer of dust and dirt. Hera wondered what had happened to him. His hands probably had some great battle wound, maybe won through a near fight defending some innocent civilian.

"How long has it been since you changed those bandages?" Hera asked. "Your hands might get sick."

"Infected," Kanan corrected, fidgeting with his hands. "It's nothing, don't worry about it."

"You men and your manliness," Hera said, rolling her eyes. "At one point you'll have to accept that there are females in the world who care about you."

"Men and our manliness?" Kanan blustered. "And do you claim to know many men who you care about?"

"I know my father. That's enough for me."

Kanan's eyes narrowed. Hera realized she'd said to much and hastily changed the subject.

"That must have been amazing, being able to travel the galaxy," she said, sitting on the ground beside Kanan. He shrugged.

"Sometimes, but it was sad too," he replied. "The whole galaxy was at war. Families were torn apart, homes burned down, and there wasn't much the Republic could do to help. We couldn't help everyone, as much as I wished we could have."

Hera heard footsteps pound closer until they skidded to a stop at the entrance to the alley. Hera glanced up, adrenaline and fear surging through her.

"Hera!" a voice squealed in Twi'leki. A female Twi'lek stood at the entrance. Her skin was a dazzling shade of azure and her eyes were a glistening silver. She wore a simple homespun shirt and pants. Her eyes widened when they fell on Kanan, who had removed his hood some time earlier.

"Oh, hi," she squeaked. "Sorry, I don't believe we've met."

"He only speaks Basic," Hera told her in Twi'leki. The Twi'lek's face fell.

"Could've told me earlier," she mumbled. "You know I can't speak Basic."

"Let it go, Lapiz," Hera told her in Twi'leki before switching to Basic as she spoke to Kanan. "I need to get going."

"Yeah, alright," he replied. "Will I see you again?"

"Count on it," Hera said. She stood and followed Lapiz out of the alley and down the market streets. Lapiz glanced over her shoulder, stealing a last look at Kanan's form. She playfully nudged Hera.

"You've been holding out on me girl!" Lapiz complained. "I didn't know you've been sneaking out to see dreamy eyes back there!"

"I haven't," Hera protested. "This is only the second time, and I'm not sneaking."

"Tell that to your dad," Lapiz replied.

"What did you need?" Hera asked.

"Your dad sent me. He wanted to talk to you or something."

"Oh great."

"Hey, it's not that bad. At least you get to go back to Mr.Dreamy afterwards. Has he kissed you yet?" Lapiz asked, her eyes lighting up.

"I've only known him a day!" Hera protested. "He's helping me with my Basic."

"Do you think he can teach me too?" Lapiz begged. Hera shrugged.

"One problem at a time. Just one problem at a time."
