Chapter 36

Melanie

I pull over outside Evie's house, the engine humming softly as I put the car in park, the rain creating a gentle symphony on the car roof. We both step out into the crisp night air, and I walk to the trunk, unlocking it for Evie to retrieve her things. She glances at her house and then back at me.

"You know," she says, a mischievous glint in her eyes, "I might follow your example and find a place of my own."

I nod in agreement. "You really should. It's liberating."

Evie's eyes light up with excitement. "Maybe I'll find an apartment in your new building. We could have coffee every morning in our pajamas."

I like the sound of that. I wink at her. "I'll keep an eye out for apartment listings. Who knows, we might end up being neighbors," I reply with a smile.

She grins, clearly excited about the prospect. "I hope you find something soon. It'll be so much fun!"

We share a hug, and as we part, Evie heads towards her house and I climb into the driver's seat. The engine roars to life, and I find myself with a moment to spare. My hand automatically reaches for my phone, and I unlock the screen. Fingers hovering over the keyboard, I contemplate the message I'm about to send to Daniel.

After a moment of hesitation, I decide to keep it simple. "Can we meet tonight?" I type, and with a press of the send button, the message is on its way. I lock my phone, lean back on the seat, and close my eyes, pinching the bridge of my nose.

A soft buzz interrupts the quiet of the car. I open my eyes, unlock my phone, and read Daniel's response. "I'm sorry. I scheduled a therapy session for tonight. I really need it after everything that happened."

A pang of guilt hits me. I hadn't considered the emotional toll this might have taken on him. But before I can dwell on it, another message arrives. "Can we meet tomorrow after work? Café by the river?" Daniel suggests.

I take a deep breath, considering the proposal. A public place – it should be safe. He can't make a scene there. Right? I reply, "Okay. Good night."

"Good night. I missed you," he responds.

I don't reply, tossing the phone into my bag. I focus on the road, raindrops painting patterns on the windshield. The rhythmic hum of the car's engine provides a backdrop to the whirlwind of thoughts in my mind.

As I navigate through the dimly lit streets, I try not to be consumed by guilt. Daniel's decision to schedule therapy on a Sunday night speaks volumes. He's genuinely shaken up, and I can't help but wonder how he'll react when I tell him tomorrow that my decision is final. We're not getting back together.

I hope he understands. He's not ready, and I can't be with him, not in this state. It's exhausting, emotionally draining. The truth is, I'm not sure I want to be with Daniel, even if he does work on himself. The constant ups and downs, the short fuse, it feels like something inside me has broken.

I find myself at an intersection, the city sounds buzzing around me. Glancing left and right, I turn right almost instinctively, the decision registering in my mind after the fact. The route leads to my new apartment. It makes sense to stop there first, unpack my bag, and then head back to my parents' house. After all, I'll eventually have to bring all this stuff to the apartment, right?

My heart races at the thought that this time next week, I'll be living in my very own place. The anticipation, the freedom, it's a welcomed change. I realize I never got around to bringing Daniel to see the new apartment, and a sense of relief washes over me. He doesn't have to know where I'll be living.

My stomach tightens into a knot when memories of Matt pursuing Mallory resurface. The feeling of being stalked, the intrusion into our family home – it was an awful situation. I shake my head, attempting to push back those memories. Everything is okay now. It's all over. Mallory is happy with Adam, and Matt is no longer a threat. The past can't dictate the future.

I navigate through the familiar streets, the cityscape changing as I approach my new apartment building. I find a parking spot and pull in, the engine humming softly as I turn it off. Stepping out of the car, I breathe in the cool air and walk towards the trunk. Opening it, I reach for my duffel bag, my mind preoccupied with the thoughts of settling into my own place.

As I secure my bag, closing the trunk, a familiar voice breaks through the quiet. "Melanie?" The sound of my name sends a jolt through me, and I turn around, my heart skipping a beat. There, standing just a few feet away, is Marcus. The sight of him is enough to momentarily steal my breath.

He looks effortlessly stylish with his sleek hair pulled back into a bun, a subtle stubble on his cheeks, and those piercing green eyes that seem to see through everything. Dressed warmly, the contours of hard muscle are evident beneath his clothing, and a chill runs down my spine.

"Hey," I manage to utter under my breath, my eyes fixed on him. Marcus responds with a warm smile, revealing his perfect teeth. "Hey," he says, the casual greeting making my heart flutter. He takes a step towards me, his eyes locking onto mine, and asks, "What are you doing here?"

I look down at the duffel bag in my arms and mumble, "Just bringing some things to my apartment."

Marcus extends his hand towards me and asks, "Can I give you a hand?"

I find myself lost in Marcus' eyes, the intensity of the moment making it difficult to focus on anything else. Almost instinctively, I hand my bag to him. He effortlessly takes it, slinging it over his back. I keep staring at him, momentarily captivated by the ease with which he carries himself.

"You'll have to lead the way," Marcus says, breaking the silence. "I don't know where your apartment is."

It's like waking up from a trance. I curtly turn on my heel and start walking towards the apartment building. Marcus catches up to me, and we walk side by side. We enter the building, and I lead him to the elevator. As the doors close, Marcus breaks the silence. "Did you have fun at Adam's lake house?"

I steal a momentary glance at him, but I quickly avert my eyes, struggling to maintain my self-control. "Yeah," I reply, keeping my eyes fixed on the elevator doors. "It was beautiful." The air feels charged, and I can sense Marcus's eyes on me, his presence both comforting and unsettling.

"Will you stay at your new place tonight?" Marcus inquires, his voice breaking the silence. I shake my head, still staring straight ahead. "No, just unpacking the stuff I had with me at the lake house," I reply.

Marcus nods in understanding, adding, "Smart. It'll save you some time."

Unable to resist, I steal a glance at him. His gaze is intense, disarming, and I find myself drawn into the depth of his green eyes. The elevator doors slide open, breaking the moment, and we step out, with me leading the way to my apartment.

I open the door and step into the apartment, Marcus right behind me. He takes a few steps inside, stopping to take in the space around him. His eyes carefully scan the room, and he approaches the wall where Evie and I hung some photos in frames the other day. I watch him as he looks at them one by one, the memories captured in those moments playing before his eyes. Finally, he turns around, and his gaze meets mine. A smile plays on his lips, melting my heart and apparently my brain too because I can't seem to utter a word to save my life.

"Melanie, the place looks great. It seems like it's really coming together," he says, breaking the silence.

I manage to find my voice, offering a simple, "Thanks."

Marcus's smile lingers as he asks, "So, when are you expecting to move in?"

I reply, "I'm hoping for Friday."

"That's great," he says, still smiling, "Let me know if you need any help."

"Sure, I will," I reply.

Marcus then asks, "Where should I put your bag?"

I'm momentarily lost in his presence, not fully comprehending what he's saying. "What?" I ask in confusion.

His gaze shifts to the bag he's been carrying for me, and realization hits me. "Oh, my bag. Right," I say with a slight blush. "This way," I add, leading him to the room that will soon become my bedroom.
