Chapter 4

That's right. Soobin told him all those years ago he'd never leave him even if he said the weirdest thing and in this case, asking him to prom was the weird thing.

Back then, it was a simple statement said by children who had no worries except why people could smell like cinnamon rolls but now that they were older, the simple statement could change lives.

Soobin was the same as when Yeonjun first met him. Of course, physically and mentally he had grown but his gentle traits and loving nature remained, possibly just increasing over time. Even the one statement said long ago would be something older Soobin would say which made it very trustworthy to fall back on for reassurance.

It was now or never that he had to speak and now or never, never seemed more scary. Unfortunately, Soobin beat him to speaking before he could.

"What do you think of eyes?" Soobin asked, nearly startling Yeonjun at the sudden question and if they weren't so close, Yeonjun would've definitely thought his best friend had a screw loose but it was Soobin so it made sense.

"Eyes? Well, they're, eyes. They're great for seeing and they have a lot of colours sometimes."

Soobin hummed in response, accepting the answer but not what he was looking for.

"Don't you ever realize how lonely they are?"

Yeonjun frowned, his eyebrows furrowing as he tried to make sense of what the taller meant by 'lonely.' Surely they were anything but that.

"It's just that we all have two but you realize, they can never see each other. They see the world, experience everything, all that happens around us go through them and yet they think that there's no one to help carry the burden of functioning as one of humanity's greatest tools. They work so hard, probably wishing to have someone just like them but your nose separates them, a mountain to be exact, and they continue living their lonely lives thinking they'll forever be destined to keep us going."

"Soobie, are you okay?" Yeonjun asked, lifting a hand to press it on the younger's face who only let out a small laugh in response.

"I'm fine. I was just trying to sound wise. Y'know, as a way of telling you that you arent alone like your eyes. You have someone that sees you and you have no mountain to separate us so if you have anything you wanna say, don't be scared to say it. There's no one that will listen more than me who would stop the world and time just to listen to you speak."

Yeonjun felt his breath hitch in his throat. These words and that moment were future memories he'd want to cherish as if they were memories of love. Unconditional memories he wanted to save. Words as seemingly trifling as those were normally overlooked but Yeonjun couldn't do that now when they hit a spot in his heart that made him go fully soft.

His insides soared, his mind relaxed, and his legs moved to stand while pulling Soobin up with him hand in hand. Normally, he didn't like having to tilt his head a bit just to look into the taller's beautifully warm brown eyes but now, his normally boring eyes and non-expressionless face were shining by looking at him.

He swore he must've been intoxicated by some poison now that he suddenly couldn't feel any anxiety. With the way he felt, he could run the world, climb mountains, ride a bike, take a dive, car surf, he could- god damn it.

The second he realized he was feeling much too calm, a mild form of panic entered once again, essentially ruining him again.

Gulping anxiously, Yeonjun finally decided to get his minuscule and laughable worries out of him for the better. Who cared if he was rejected?

Ha. Definitely not him.

"Well, it's just that I want to ask you; will you be my prom date?" Yeonjun asked, going right into what he wanted to say as he gripped Soobin's hands tightly, nearly as if he feared he'd run away or disappear. "I know we both didn't want to go but I thought-"

Loud peels of laughter echoed around the two, interrupting his sentence as Soobin squeezed Yeonjun's hands and shook in amusement.

"Well, I guess I thought wrong," Yeonjun mumbled, his stomach sinking as he began pulling away.

"No, silly! You actual dork! What made you think I'd decline?" Soobin asked incredulously. "Why were you so worked up? You know I'd never decline."

Yeonjun blinked dumbly, trying to process the words of the beauty before him.

Dimples, bright smile, warm hands.

He was suddenly reminded of the time he realized he had unceremoniously fallen head over heels for his best friend and it was almost suffocating to think of it in that overwhelming moment.

"OW! GET YOUR HANDS OFF!"

"CHOI YEONJUN DON'T SPEAK TO YOUR MOTHER LIKE THAT!"

"But you're hurting me!" Yeonjun whined quieter than before, swatting the woman's hands away defensively.

"How the hell do you expect your cuts to heal if you won't even let me touch them?" Mrs Choi asked as she continuously poked the male's face with an alcohol-soaked towel.

Yeonjun grumbled under his breath, staring out the living room window as his face throbbed painfully. Why did he think petting the stray cat was a good idea?

If only he had stayed on the sidewalk and not strayed, he wouldn't be in that situation where scratch marks now littered his face and an arm.

"Soobin!" Yeonjun shrieked as he spotted the male step onto his porch with a 'boring' book. "SAVE ME!"

Said individual turned at the call of his name, furrowing his eyebrows upon seeing the woman dealing with the bruises.

Immediately, Soobin abandoned his book and made his way over to the neighbouring house right as Yeonjun began to loudly groan again. Mayhaps it had to with the fact that Soobin was on his way to save him and he wanted him to hurry or mayhaps it really did hurt but either way, Yeonjun felt the need to make a racket.

"OW! THAT HURTS LIKE A B-"

"Hello," Soobin greeted, cutting Yeonjun off as he walked in as if he lived there. "Don't worry, Ma'am. I'll take care of him."

"Oh my hesus, thank you!" Yeonjun and his Mother cried simultaneously, allowing Soobin to do what he did best, calm Yeonjun down as if he was made for that.

Long delicate fingers, concentrated eyes, and a gentle puff of air blown on wherever Soobin disinfected, Yeonjun could just stare with hearts in his eyes. He didn't even protest once during the entire time his best friend poked and cleaned him up.

Favouritism Mrs Choi always said.

He was confused more than anyone the second he realized he had a different feeling in him now that it was someone he so blindly trusted. It gave him a feeling that made him want to look for Soobin whenever he felt that way.

In what way to be exact? Honestly, any emotion because the moment Yeonjun started seeing Soobin in a different light, he realized that he had been going through so many feelings.

Pain, joy, calm, annoyance, etcetera.

Soobin to him then was like a song. A song he had heard and seen hundreds upon hundreds of times and didn't really see with full colour until one day, which was that day in his case, he suddenly saw him in full light. He fell down the nearly endless hole and landed painfully only to realize he landed on what was called 'love.'

Soobin to him was the definition of 'love.'
