Chapter Two

Of the reactions I expect, Blaire doubling over in laughter is not one of them. I can't stop her fits, even as I'm trying desperately to figure out if she's just insane, actually a demon, or possibly both. Of course, I don't believe in demons. At least, I don't think so. The man who had fought with us when the test went wrong, though... He wasn't like any person I had seen before.

"Blaire, not funny! You have to tell me if you are, we're—"

"Roommates, I know, Kate. And no."

"No?"

"I'm not a demon. I have magic, but I'm as mortal as you are."

"Oh, I just thought... Sorry."

Blaire laughs one last time, reaching up to wipe her eyes. "That's not the question I was expecting, I apologize."

"What were you expecting me to ask?"

"Oh, something along the lines of, 'so that medical study we did was set up by the demons?' to which I would respond 'yepperonies, and they took your body to let some dark age evil spirit rest inside and probably kill people' and you would say 'oh no!' and then I would tell you the plan."

"The plan?" I ask.

"Oh, it's not a very good plan. And it's only good at all if you assumed I didn't have one."

"Wait, but what's the plan?"

"Go find a demon and make him tell us where your body is. Because I swear to the hell, if you don't climb out of my head soon..."

I roll my eyes. "You've run out of threats against me. Guess that means I can stay for a while."

"Definitely not what I said. Anyway, the plan has more potential than you might think," Blaire responds, changing the subject.

"Well, I'm still not sure what's happening, so I don't think I'm the best judge of what has potential. I wasn't questioning your plan before, just so you know."

Blaire's mouth falls open. "Why not? It's full of holes! Chasing after the very thing that wants us dead? Well, me. Chasing after the very thing that wants me dead?"

"Do you want me to believe in your plan or not?" I ask, suddenly rather confused.

"I want you to think through the plan and come to your own conclusion about it. What's the point in having two heads if they're churning out the same ideas all the time, Kate?" Blaire asks, pointing a finger at me in the mirror. I am briefly overcome by how absolutely absurd we must look to an outside observer.

"Well, great minds think alike," I tell her.

Blaire huffs. "And fools seldom differ. Now look, I'm rather invested in not dying, and I imagine you are too. I'm not trying to be contradictory, but think about it: if you really think about all of my plans, maybe you'll find some fault that I didn't catch. So chasing demons, think about it."

I do, biting on my lip until Blaire bites down, forcing me to stop. "Don't damage my body. I don't have time to get lip balm right now."

"Yes, you kind of do. All we're doing is thinking," I remind her.

"But if we go out that door and onto the road again, the one after us might see."

"Wait, what?"

"Oh, did I not mention that? The demon we're gonna be going after, he's trying to kill us as well."
