Chapter 2
"Did you know that there's gonna be an art contest!!! Apparently, it's held every summer!!"
Softkit turned her head to face her sister and smiled, "Cool, you gonna join?"
"Yup! You?"
The long-furred gray tabby twitched her ears, Should I? But what if everyone laughs at my submission? Nah, maybe if I'm better at art I'll join another year. "Nah, I think I'll skip this one."
"Okay! Imma try to get some info on what to do!" Mistlekit bounced out of the nursery, leaving Softkit alone.
The molly sighed, for the first time, she was bored. No thoughts, no questions, no dreams. Just emptiness. "Hollowkit?" she called out, in hopes her brother would want to play something. But no, her brother was sleeping in his nest, tail wrapped around him, his chest rising up and down steadily. He had been annoying the trainees and was now exhausted, he would definitely kill Softkit for waking him.
What to do. What to do. The warriors would be busy, so would the trainees... Maybe I could go talk to the caretakers? Or healer? Maybe the veterans? Yeah! I could go listen to stories!
She scampered off to the veterans' den, leaving the nursery. She poked her head through the long grass and called out, "Hello? Any-cat awake?"
"I am now," grumbled Sunspeckle, blinking his eyes, trying to adjust to the lighting.
Softkit slowly padded in and embarrassedly mewed, "Oops!"
Ripplefrost welcomed her in with a warm smile and signaled her to sit down, "Don't mind Sunspeckle. He's just a grump, age has been getting to him."
She smirked, and eyed around the den. Where were Junipersplash and Littletwig? Not to be offensive, but she kinda liked them better. Sunspeckle was always rude and Ripplefrost always talked about the clan 'back in her day'.
Seeing Softkit's gaze wander, Ripplefrost quickly explained, "Littletwig and Junipersplash are out collecting the cats who are entering the art contests' names. Anyway, I'm guessing you're here for a story?"
She nodded. Seeing this Sunspeckle mumbled, "I guess I won't be catching any sleep here." He lumbered up, and drowsily exited the den, probably to a more quiet area to doze.
"So, what do you want to hear about?"
Softkit tilted her head, and thought. Maybe I could learn about Cloudystone? Nah, I've heard stories about him already. I don't really like the council. Maybe, Lichencall! "I wanna know about Lichencall!"
Ripplefrost raised his eyebrows, "Interesting. Well, I guess we should start from the beginning." He shifted his position to a side lay to be more comfortable. "Lichencall's parents are Littletwig; actually and Orchideyes, who is now unfortunately in Blooming Tribe. Lichencall's sister is Ravenwish! She had two other siblings but they died as kits. Too soon for her to remember."
"As a kit, Lichencall never showed any interest in herbs, so it was a surprise when Blooming Tribe selected her. And even as a trainee, she would be jealous watching her sister and the other trainees learn different things. But when her mother Orchideyes was wounded by a twoleg's dog, Lichenpaw was unable to save her due to her lack of knowledge of medicine. Her mentor, Puddlebee, was out collecting herbs during this time."
"Ravenwish at that time, still learning, blamed Lichencall for their mother's death. And the two grew distant. Lichencall also blamed herself, if only she had put more effort into learning, Orchideyes would have survived. And so, Lichenpaw became more passionate in her duty, and soon became a successful healer, succeeding her mentor. And here she is now, being an amazing healer, helping her clan through many years. Her relationship with her sister is now mended too. She now has a trainee of her own, Owlpaw. Just like herself, no one expected for him to be chosen. But he is already fitting into his place perfectly."
Wow!! Softkit always thought that Lichencall always wanted to be a healer. The molly seemed so perfect for the position. She also felt a pang of sympathy for the healer. I feel so bad for her. Her mother died because of her. I could never imagine how that would feel, and I'm glad I don't need to!
"Sad right?" blurted Ripplefrost unexpectedly.
"Yeah..." Softkit mumbled.
Trying to lighten up the depressing mood, the elder enthusiastically mewed, "Wanna hear another story?
"No thank you!" she exclaimed, starting to exit the den. One sob story was enough. She didn't want to have a depressing day after hearing all her clanmates' backstories. Already outside the den, she turned her head and called back, "Thank you!!"
"Oof!" Softkit had walked straight into Needlepaw.
The trainee flustered, "Oh- umm- sorry about that— I- ummm– need to get going!- Bye!!"
Softkit gave Needlepaw an odd look. What is going on today? Needlepaw probably is keeping something a secret....but what?
"You saw that too, right?" It was Hollowkit. He looked as confused as ever, his amber eyes filled with uncertainty.
"I did..." Softkit said slowly. "But who cares. Cat's act weird all the time."
Her brother mumbled something under his breath and walked away towards the hunter's den, probably to bug them about something.
Softkit was bored. Again. What was up today! She was usually never bored! Where was Puddlesky? Maybe I can go play with them or help? At this point, I'd do anything! I hate being bored! She began padding over to the trainee's den to look for the caretaker. She figured that they were probably there, changing moss, clearing thorns and scraps of fur, and decorating them.
"Puddlesky!!"
They lifted their head and looked at her blankly for a moment before exclaiming, "Softkit! Whatcha doing?"
"I'm bored!" she grumbled, collapsing onto a nest decorated with clovers.
"Careful!" Ravenwish warned.
"It's not like it's going to stay perfect forever," Softkit exasperated. "But fine." She scrambled up and again fell onto the ground, whining, "I'm boooooooooored."
Ravenwish, continuing to shape the moss, and mused, "Why don't you play with your siblings?"
"Mistlekit's working on the art contest and Hollowkit's doing his own thing."
This time Puddlesky replied, "Why not go talk to the veterans?"
"I already did."
Sympathetically the grey splotched cat sighed, "I'm sorry, but we can't play with you right now. The trainee's nests haven't been cleaned since a moon!"
"Uuuuuuugggggghhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!" The kit stalked out of the den, her head and tail low. But she instantly perked up at the sight of Owlpaw who was just about to exit camp. She sprinted up to him and clutched onto his front paws, looking up and begging, "What are you doing!? Whatever you're doing, can I do it too? I'm so bored!! PLEASE!!! Please!! I'm not gonna let go till you say yes!" She hugged his legs tighter. Please let this be one of his nice days!
Owlpaw, though, easily shook her off and snapped, "Stop acting like a newborn kit and have some civilized manners!"
"Okay, okay! Whatever! Can I come with you?"
The gatherer tried to come up with some excuse, "Will your parents allow you to?"
"Of course they will! If I'm with you."
He rolled back his head and wearily agreed, "Fine. But stay with me!"
Yes! She happily squealed, "Okay!!" As they began padding into the fields, she asked, "What are we doing?"
"Gathering goldenseal, it's been raining lately and goldenseal usually does well in moist soil."
"Oh, ok!" she simply mewed, skipping along with the trainee. The walk was silent, and quite boring. Softkit soon regretted coming along with Owlpaw, he was no fun. "Sooooooo, what does goldenseal do?"
Owlpaw didn't even make eye contact before grumbling, "Heal infected wounds."
Trying to keep the conversation going, the kit asked again, "Why do we need it now if none of the warriors are hurt?"
"Bug bites. It's green-leaf."
"Oh." she responded, feeling stupid at Owlpaw's straightforward answer.
Staring at the clouds, Softkit obnoxiously mewed again, "What does Goldenseal look like?"
"Can you just go!" Owlpaw hissed. "I don't want any distractions! And your pesky questions are getting on my nerves." He stormed off, kicking dust in the air. Softkit's eyes trailed after him, annoyed.
She was bored again. Ugh! What can I do out of camp, I might as well use this chance. She looked around, her stomach growling, and her gaze landed on a berry bush with bubbly golden, pale berries hanging from the stems. Softkit eagerly plucked one off and was about to plop it into her mouth but halted. 'Do not eat random plants!' Lichencall's words from a moon ago echoed through her mind and the kitten reluctantly dropped the fruit.
Softkit stomped her way back to camp, pangs of hunger punching her stomach. She hastily snatched a vole from the pile and brought it back to the nursery to devour it. Hollowkit bounded up to her with a disgusted face and questioned, "You'd seriously eat a vole! They're disgusting!! Why not get a nice fat lark?"
"I don't really care. I'm just starving," shrugged Softkit, mouth full with chewy meat. "Anyway, why would I get a bird? They're so... tough and feathery!"
Hollowkit gave a fake offended look, "At least they taste better!"
Mistlekit came strutting forward and mewed with a friendly mocking tone, "How did I even call you my brother and sister when you like voles and larks! Clearly hare is the superior prey."
"Hare if nothing but fluff and bones," scoffed her brother.
Mistlekit countered, "Lark is just feathers!"
"Exactly why vole is the best!" butted in Softkit, "It has barely any fur and mostly just meat!"
"It's too chewy though," complained her sister, "Hare meat is nice and soft."
"So we can agree that hare and vole are much better than larks."
Hollowkit grumbled, "Your taste buds are as bland as a nut."
"What's that supposed to mean?" asked Softkit, seriously confused. Her sister giggled.
The tom gave up, "You are impossible!"
"Eh," the light grey tabby molly dismissed Hollowkit's words and bent to take another big bite of the rodent and gave a satisfying 'mmmmmmmmmm'. Hollowkit just fumed beside her. The three littermates gave into a burst of laughter after an awkward moment of silence.
Just then, their father came up to them, holding a small, scaly, tan brown reptile and muffled, "Anyone like lizard?"
Mallowmist scooted beside her mate and shouldered him, "Mouse is WAY better."
The two sisters groaned while Hollowkit smirked and gave a dramatic sigh, "Here we go again."
Filler I guess, but great time to show family and littermates. Anyways, hope you like it!!!!!!!
