Chapter Twenty
Gab's PoV
Camp Half Blood would have been a more amazing and impressive place if I had been actually paying attention to my surroundings. Instead, I focused my attention on the brief history lesson Annabeth and Reyna were giving me about what happened to the gods as they moved from Greece to Rome and finally settling on America for the time being. Then they went into explaining what happened during the two most recent wars against the Titans and giants while Percy interrupted every so often to point out a new landmark or a camp activity some of the campers were doing.
Every so often I caught myself staring at Reyna's hair, and I would have to shake my head slightly and look in some other direction. As much as I really liked the fact that I got to spend time with Reyna even if I didn't want to admit it, it also slightly annoyed me because I kept getting distracted. I needed to get as much information as I could from them about this new world, and I needed to some how get information about whatever was going on now. I absolutely hate being left in the dark.
Finally, when we were at the edge of the woods, they finished with the tour and the history lesson. I stared at them in awe as I took in the latest bits of information. "Wait, you two," I pointed to Annabeth and Percy," went into Tartarus? And you," I pointed to Reyna, "and Nico and a satyr traveled across the world to bring a statue that was guarded by a giant spider for over a millennia by shadow travel after he went through Tartarus by himself in order to prevent a war between the camps?" They nodded uncomfortably. "That has got to be the most amazing thing I have ever heard. How did you guys do it?" I asked in awe.
"Honestly, I don't know. You just kind of do it I guess. We were lucky to get a lot of help along the way. I just wish... Never mind." Annabeth said with a far away look in her eyes. Percy grabbed her hand and squeezed it gently. Reyna looked away with the same unfocused gaze that Annabeth had. I had the urge to grab Reyna's hand like Percy grabbed Annabeth's, so I could tell her silently it would be okay and I was here for her. Instead, I looked down and coughed awkwardly.
"So... I wanted to ask you what was going on with the Hades situation," I said, changing the subject.
We started walking around the edge of the woods again before Reyna responded. "Well, as you probably figured out by now, the Underworld is going into chaos with Hades gone. That's not the only thing that has been happening though. Nico believes something is tearing at the Underworld itself and trying to break it apart. There also seems to have been a rise in the number of monster attacks in the past month. They've even started attacking the mortals. Also, the monsters are regenerating faster than usual. This only happened once before as far as we know, and that was when Thantos lost control of the Doors of Death. We know it's not that, however, because Nico has already talked to Thantos, and the Doors are still guarded and under his control. We're still looking for Hades and any new information as to what is going on, but I've had to evacuate most of Camp Jupiter because monsters keep attacking the borders. We have guards stationed at the borders, but monsters can still get inside the camp. It's gotten too dangerous for people to live there, so we came here for the time being." The praetor said while tugging slightly at her cloak.
I couldn't imagine what it must be like to be responsible for an entire camp of demigods and their families at her age. She didn't look more than 17, but her eyes held the weight of what one would expect to see in a weary old lady. The tiredness of having seen too much and done too much. I didn't even realize I had been bringing my arm up to wrap her in a hug as we walked until someone ran up to us shouting, "Percy!" The voice broke me from my thoughts, and I hurriedly swung my arm back down to my side, hoping no one saw what I was doing.
We turned around and a cyclops came running up to us with a red harpy sitting on his shoulder. I panicked and reached for my knife, but Percy ran forward before I could react. They crashed into each other in a bone crushing hug, jostling the harpy from her perch. "Brother! Grover wants to see you. He is by the dining pavilion." The cyclops explained excitedly.
"Thanks, Tyson. Hi Ella." Percy smiled.
"Ella and Tyson are going to visit Rachel. Ella likes Rachel. Rachel is good for harpies." The harpy said happily.
Annabeth, Reyna, and Percy smiled at them and waved as Tyson carried Ella away toward a cave off in the distance. The cave that held the oracle. I turned around sheepishly to face them. "I'm sorry I tried to kill them," I said quietly.
Percy chuckled lightly. "The good thing is you didn't, but to be honest, if I didn't know who they were, I probably would have almost killed them too. I guess we should get going. Grover might have found some important information. Oh yeah, and if you see an overly friendly hellhound running around and slobbering over everyone around the sword arena, try not to kill her too? She's Mrs. O'Leary."
Everyone laughed as we started walking back to the open aired dining pavilion. Even though the end of the world might be coming for the third time this decade, I haven't felt so happy in years.
Sorry this chapter is shorter than some of the ones I've been writing lately. There wasn't as much to write about as there was in some of the other characters' points of views this time. I hope you enjoyed it anyway, and have a great day!
