Chapter Nine
Gab's PoV
Apart from almost drowning, running away from my house that was full of Greek monsters, watching a girl raise the undead to kill said monsters, the same girl fainting after using her super awesome super powers to save us, another nosy girl getting all up in my business, having a mental breakdown in front of that girl, and a random boy flying out of no where and slamming into the conscious girl while weeping hysterically, my day was going just fantastic! Note the sarcasm. I haven't had a day this eventful since the Monday my dad died, so I wasn't very hopeful about how this one was going to end. I could only pray that the unknown girl who laid asleep on the ground would still live by the time everything was said and done.
Anyway, I got up from the ground, wiping stray, traitorous tears off my face, and gently lifted the sobbing boy off of Annie, so she could detach herself from him and the ground. However, as I lifted him, I noticed something a little off about him. He had hips.
Shit, did I misgender him or her? What if they are like me? Ugh this is so confusing, and they probably don't want to talk about that right now. What happened to them? I'm such a terrible person I should be asking them instead of worrying about what their gender is.
Annie's voice brought me out of my thoughts as she asked the person kindly, "Hey, it's okay. Do you mind telling us what happened? What's your name?"
How was she being so calm and collected? Is this what you're supposed to do when you actually know how to socialize? I guess it would have been smart to ask the person what their name was, and they couldn't have been crying for no reason. I am such a dumbass.
Again, a voice pulled me out of my thoughts while I was slowly freaking out, but this time it was the new person's voice. "M-my name is N-Nelson," the person hiccuped. "Y-you probably w-wouldn't believe me if I t-told you wh-what happened-ed." Nelson broke down into tears again. I stood there, stunned. I didn't know what to do. I've hadn't had to actually talk to or comfort people for years. I honestly wanted to help, but I had no idea what was expected of me to do.
I probably seem really cold hearted to Nelson and Annie right now.
"Shut up," I mumbled to myself, quietly enough so that the others didn't hear me.
While I was standing there and being awkward, Annie saved the day again. She pulled Nelson into a hug and started drawing circles on their back while whispering condolences to them. After a few minutes, they visibly relaxed slightly, and instead of sobbing, they were now just crying slightly with loud hiccups every few seconds. I sat down next to them and tried to think of something to say.
Finally, I said, "We've seen a few weird things in the past hour or so. I'm pretty sure we'll believe you. What happened?"
Nelson finally looked up at me. They were tanned like Annie, and they had brown eyes that were red and puffy from crying. Their glasses were askew, and their face was stained with silver tracks of tears. "O-okay," they hiccuped. "W-well, I g-got home from s-school, and I c-called out to my m-mom like I usually d-do when I get h-home. She d-didn't answer, s-so I thought she m-might have been in the b-bathroom or something." Nelson took a shaky breath before continuing. "I ch-checked on my grape garden, and after a f-few minutes, I g-grabbed a bunch of g-grapes and went around the h-house looking for my m-mom. I went into her r-room and I saw her l-lying on the bed..." Nelson started sobbing again, and it took a few minutes to calm them down enough to finish. "Sh-she was d-dead. I saw a girl s-standing next to h-her. She had h-hair made of f-fire, a donkey leg, and a m-metal leg. She also had f-fangs, and she was l-licking my mom's blood off of th-them. She called herself an e-empousa, and she t-tried to kiss m-me. Then, wh-when I didn't kiss h-her, she tried to k-kill me, but the g-grapes in my hand t-turned into a grape v-vine. The vine w-wrapped around the e-empousa, and she turned to a-ash. Then I ran, and I f-found you guys."
They started crying again, and this time I hugged them with Annie. I couldn't believe they lost their parent too, and they actually had to see her dead with her murderer still standing there at the edge of her bed. Her murderer being a Greek monster no less.
Eventually, Nelson and Annie's breathing leveled out, and I detached myself from them to let them sleep. I decided I would keep watch for all of them for now until we all decided what to do tomorrow. Right now, I had a lot to think about, and one big question that must be solved if we were going to survive. Why were Greek monsters trying to attack us?
An idea started forming in my head. An idea that seemed so impossible, and yet...
Please, mom. If I'm right, and you are a Greek goddess, please help us. We can't do this on our own, and I don't even know if we even are an "us."
This is probably going to be the last chapter for tonight. Thank you guys so much for reading this! It means a lot to me. I hope you have a great night!
