Chapter Thirty
Beautiful Drawing of Blaise by
"I don't think it's good for you to come near the sick patients." Topaz remarked.
"Then how the hell are we supposed to treat them?" Lux growled, sending a deathly glare at Skye, who cowered back.
Topaz stayed silent. "Good point."
Topaz ushered them toward a small hut, supported by two large tree branches, rope railings separated them from the high drop, they were adorned by vines of pink and white flowers, the emerald leaves seemingly unbothered by the aura of death surrounding the village.
Skye stared at the rope railing, nausea filling her stomach.
She heard a sickening rip. Before she plummeted to her death she managed to grab onto the rope.
She hung there, suspended thousands of feet above the ground. The ropes searing her palms as she dangled above near certain death.
Skye continued walking, forcing herself to ignore the feeling of dread that settled its way into her stomach.
They walked into the small hut, two frail children laying in two beds across the room from each other.
Lux walked up to them, his quiet steps the only sound in the room except for the children's ragged breathing.
Lux walked up to the bed closest to him, the boy's mousy brown hair splayed out around him, his small round face a reddish hue. "How are you feeling, little guy?" Lux asked gently, placing a hand onto the boy's forehead.
Lux recoiled his hand, "Damn, he's burning!" He exclaimed. "Get me some cold water and some Schoenus."
Topaz scurried away in compliance.
"It's hot, and my head hurts," the little boy replied, his voice hoarse.
"Okay, we'll get you something to make you feel better." Lux smiled.
Topaz returned with a bucket of cold water in hand and a small satchel of green herbs, small pink flowers dotting them.
Lux took the objects, "I need something to grind the herbs with." Lux stated, and Topaz retrieved a mortar and pestle from a small table in the room.
Lux placed the herbs and added a few drops of cold water into the mix before grinding it all together.
"I also need some Aspalax and Berula." Lux told them, and Topaz ran out.
"You're quite the healer." Damien muttered out.
Lux ignored him as Topaz came in and he continued grinding the ingredients together.
Once the ingredients were all grinded Lux said. "Everyone be quiet."
Lux started motioning his hand around the small bowl of grinded materials, sprinkles of magic floated down from his hand, falling into the bowl and enhancing the mixture.
Once Lux finished Skye blurted. "I thought you said you didn't have magic!"
"I said all I have are remains from Blaise. And now I'm, even closer to having nothing." Lux muttered out.
Damien opened his mouth as if to say something but then closed it.
"You should give this to them and they should feel better. I don't want to make more because we first have to check if it works first." Lux grumbled out and moved for the exit, passing Damien.
"Lux... Is this really going to work?" Damien asked, moving in front of the open door.
Lux sneered for a moment, before casting a glance at the sick boys, and then at Topaz.
"No." He said, a mocking smile on his face.
"Lux!" Damien grabbed at Lux's hand, "Please, I know we don't see eye to eye, but the village is-"
"Let me go." Damien flinched and brought his hand back to his side. "You already know the answer to that question, Damien. There's no reason to ask pointless questions." Lux paused, looking at the boys again. "I'm almost jealous of the life you've made for yourself. Almost." Lux whispered something in Damien's ear before he slipped through the door.
But what left Skye the most bewildered was that she couldn't tell whether or not Lux was being serious.
