Third Highest

Most people have been asked at some point in their live if they know the highest, or even the second highest mountain in the world. And occasionally you get questions about the highest mountain (including the bit under water), or even the highest mountain on Mars. But Brian has been pondering again (this is what working on your own does to you over a long period of time...) and once again Google (other search engines are available, but don't sound so cool) has been employed and we bring you the third highest, Kangchenjunga.

Kangchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world with an elevation of 8,586 m (28,169 ft). It rises about 20 km (12 mi) south of the general alignment of the Great Himalayan range, and is located on the boundary between Nepal and the Indian state of Sikkim. Although third in Nepal, Kangchenjunga is the highest peak in India, and also the name of the surrounding section of the Himalayas and means "The Five Treasures of Snows", as it contains five peaks. The treasures represent the five repositories of God, which are gold, silver, gems, grain, and holy books.

And just to confirm what you already know, K2 rolls into the charts as the second-highest mountain on Earth, as it's about 230m lower than Mount Everest. For every four people who have reached the summit, one has died trying.

Mt Everest is considered somewhat easier to climb and obviously has a much higher number of people who've climbed it, although 'easy' in this context may be debatable...
