Chapter 3
It's been three days since Donnie has last been seen since he locked himself in the lab. Donnie got a text on his T-Phone, but he didn't answer it. For days, his brothers have begged him by calling and texting him but with no prevail since he never answered back. But today was different. For the first time in a week, Donnie heard the familiar sound of Megan's ringtone. He got curious, since he hasn't heard from Megan in a while so he read her text.
To: Donnie
From: Megs
'Hey dude. Want some pizza?'
~~~~~
Megan waits for a few seconds and gave up easily, since she remembered Raph saying that Donnie might not reply at all. Surprisingly, she got a text within seconds.
To: Megan
From: Donnie-boi
'No thanks.'
Megan scoffs as she punches the keys to her T-Phone.
To: Donnie-boi
From: Megan
'I'm not taking no for an answer. Now unlock the garage door so we can party. I'll grab the pizza and you'll pop in Mythbusters. Fair deal?'
~~~~~
Donnie chuckles slightly at the text and typed back 'Okay'.
He starts by cleaning up his mess a bit, making sure he had plenty of blankets and popcorn and soda in front of the small TV he kept in his lab. He positioned his tiny couch so that'd be in front of the screen, too. Then pops in a CD of his favorite show, 'The Mythbusters'. To be honest, Donnie was shocked to learn that Megan liked Mythbusters. She wasn't much of a scientific nerd, but she thought it was interesting and she learns more from that then school itself. Then again, she learned more from DONNIE then from school itself so why not. She told Donnie her brother introduced the show to her, and, for being completely clueless when it comes to science and math, she still watches it. It's one of her family favorites to watch together.
Soon, he hears a knock on his door and the smell of pizza in his nostrils and smiles slightly. He walks over and finally unlocks his door after the few days he's been stuck in his lab.
"Hey, is that pizza??"
"Not for you, Mikey! Maybe next time!"
Donnie opens the door to see Megan looking over her shoulder at a disappointed Mikey. Megan turns and smiles, her blue eyes were full of sadness and pity. She wore a green sweatshirt and ripped up jeans, with her long, red hair up in curls. Mikey kept trying to grab the pizza box she held, but when the orange banded turtle sees Donnie, he perks up.
"D! You're alive!"
Megan chuckled a bit as she turned around, but was cut off by Donnie grabbing her arm and pulling her inside his lab, locking the door behind her.
Megan pokes out her bottom lip, "Aww...come on Don, your brothers miss you."
"I don't wanna talk to them right now." He muttered. He was afraid Raph or even Leo would say something along the line of 'I told you that you never had a shot with April!'
Megan frowned, "Well...let's just watch a few episodes. I'm hungry!"
Donnie smiled slightly at that.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After about five episodes, each forty minutes long, Donnie was lying down with his head resting on Megan's lap. The TV turned off, and so Megan began to read out loud an old book she kept with her at all times. When Megan was in 3rd grade, she was an all out book worm. She read tens of thousands of books. And not wanting to brag, but she read Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows in three days time.
Today, Megan had her classical old book, Little Women, to read.
"The sun shone brightly the next morning, and all the girls were making their own preparations. Amy had slept all night with a clothespin on her nose to try to give it a little uplift. Beth kept reporting what was going on next door. She saw the carriage full of people arrive and urged the girls to hurry.
'Oh, Jo, you're not going to wear that awful hat,' said Meg as they were leaving.
'I just will,' said Jo. 'I don't mind being a boy, and this hat is fun.'
And with that, Jo marched off followed by the others." Megan continued to read as Donnie stared up at the ceiling, listening to the peaceful sounds of the exaggerated voices of the characters she created as she went along. Soon, the chapter ended and Donnie lifted his head slightly to look up at her.
"You knew. You knew April didn't like me, did you?"
Megan closed her book and set it aside, staring down at Donnie for several moments before sighing, "Yeah. I knew. But I couldn't tell you. April is my friend, too, and friends keep each other's secrets...ya know, a secret. She told me she liked Casey, and she told me to keep it a secret, so I did. And besides, it wasn't my place to tell you."
Donnie sat up and walked back to his lab table, making Megan stand up to join him. "I'm sorry, Don! Really, I am. But I didn't want to get in between yours and April's love life, so I kept to myself. I'm sorry."
"You could've told me." Donnie whispered.
Megan stared at the back of the purple banded turtle's head for several moments before she huffed angrily and crossed her arms, "No. I couldn't. And even if I could, I wouldn't! You needed to see for yourself how pathetic you were, following April around like a lost puppy!"
Donnie snapped back to her, eyes wide, "T-That's not true!"
"Your brothers tried to tell you! But you wouldn't listen!" She snapped. "Your so called crush on April almost got your brothers in serious danger. Remember the time April was captured by Karai and you left your brothers alone with the Krangg to go save her?! Whatever happened to 'Turtles First', Don! Or, did you not learn anything from Leo's mistake with Karai!"
Donnie opened his mouth to say something, but then immediately closed it. She did have a point...
Megan scowled disapprovingly, and began to stomp out of the lab, "Call me once you've got that love sick head of yours out of the clouds and smack back down to reality! Face it, Donatello! Not everyone gets a fairytale!"
She slammed the lab door behind her, leaving Donnie alone in the lab. He sighs sadly, staring down at his feet with those big, brown, sad eyes. His lips curled into a tiny, heart shattering frown as he noticed his vision blur.
"Megan's right. I never had a chance." He spoke to himself, "Life isn't a fairytale."
He walked back to the couch and crashed, staring back up at the ceiling again. He tried to sleep, only to feel how uncomfortable he was. He dug around and realized that he sat on Megan's book. Little Women by: Louisa May Alcott. Donnie stared at it curiously and flipped through the pages, coming across an odd paragraph that caught his eye:
'Laurie graduated with honor, and the whole March family and Mr. Laurence were very proud. But the look Laurie gave Jo after the ceremony made her think, "Oh dear! I know he'll say something, and then what shall I do?"
They met on a little path near the river. Dreadful pauses occurred in the conversation. But Jo saw that the moment had come.
"You've got to hear me out, Jo!" Laurie said. "I've loved you ever since I've known you. I've tried to show it, but you wouldn't let me."
"I wanted to save you this," she answered. "I never wanted you to care for me so. That's why I went away. I'm proud and fond of you, but I just can't love you as you want me to."
"Really, truly, Jo?" He took her hands.
"Oh, Teddy, I'm sorry. I can't help it. You know it's impossible for people to love other people if they don't." There was a long pause.
"Don't tell me, Jo, that you love that old man---that professor you were always writing about."
Jo wanted to laugh, but she said, "He isn't old. He's good and kind and the best friend I've got, next to you. I haven't the least idea of loving him or anyone else."
"But you will, and then what shall become of me?"
"You'll love someone else, too, and forget all this," she said sensibly.
Laurie threw himself on the ground, and it was very hard for Jo to continue. "You and I are not suited to each other. We would be miserable if we married. So we'll be good friends all our lives. You'll see that I'm right by and by." He shook his head, but she went on. "You'll find some lovely girl. I'm homely and awkward and odd. I don't like elegant society and everything would be horrid! I don't believe I'll ever marry. I'm happy as I am and love my liberty too much."
"I know better!" Broke in Laurie.
"I shall always be fond of you, but I'll never marry you!" Cried Jo. At this, Laurie broke away, leaving Jo with her hands clasped tightly in her lap.'
Donnie groaned and threw the book aside, regretting that instantly knowing that if Megan found one bent of a page, she'll murder him for 'abusing' her books. She was very sensitive if anyone treated her books badly. Books were her soft spot after all in that cold heart of hers.
"Man, not even story characters get a break in love!" Donnie muttered to himself once he picked up the book and examined it, making sure there wasn't a single crinkle in it.
Megan heard the familiar tap of her window and sighed frustratingly. She sets down her pen and walks over to her curtains, drawing them away to reveal Donnie standing outside on the fire escape. She huffed and opened the window.
"I said call, dummy. Not show up at my house." She mumbled.
Donnie scratched the back of his neck nervously as he tried to laugh, "Y-Yeah. I know. But you forgot this."
He brought out her book from behind his back, a pink bow wrapped around it. Megan rolled her eyes, even if a smile quivered on her lips. She took the book from him and then came across another discovery. Donnie had given her TWO books!
"Oliver Twist?" Her lips broke into a wide grin when she noticed the gold lettering.
"I remember you said you loved the movie. So I thought you might like the book." Donnie explained with a proud smile on his face, "Consider it a thank you gift for 'getting my love sick head out of the clouds'."
She cackled, clutching the books to her chest and smiling up at the tall mutant, "Thanks, Don."
"No problem, Rosie."
