Chapter 14

You did a good job.

I was feeling so numb at his spoken words. I could swear my heart almost burst from happiness. My thoughts were spinning like crazy, jumping from one conclusion to another. Only later had I caught my face muscles relaxing into a mild smile.

Something cold then touched the inside of my arm with a soft pressure. I flinched a bit, shutting my eyes for a brief second before opening them again and adjusting the gaze to the blond.

"Oh! You scared me!" I murmured, blush creeping to my face. I couldn't detect what kind of expression he was making due to that helmet he was stubbornly wearing all the time. But for some reason my instinct decided...yep... he was smirking.

"Really? If I knew you were such a scaredy cat I would have taken advantage of it ages ago."

"Sure you would." I clicked with my tongue. "Can I just...undo that?"

"Nope."

"Then...Let's not speak of it."

He snickered. "Sure."

"Just...quit smirking at me! It gives me the creeps!" I blurted out without even thinking.

"Impossible woman. Just go to your room. You and your talking take me a while to process so much stupid at once."

I sighed in surrender, but bitterly added: "Why are all of our conversations so pleasant?"

The blond only shrugged.

"If it means anything to you, there is something in your room that I think you would like."

"Why do you mean by that?" I stammered.

"Let's just say, a thank you to the boss would be a nice gesture." He hummed, rocking on his feet.

At that moment a picture of a grinning Kid flashed to my mind and it suddenly felt like someone turned on an internal heater inside my system.

"O-oh I-I see." My hand slipped to my lower thigh, gliding the material with the tips of my fingers. The feeling of calmness soon flashed through me, finally being able to sort my thoughts.

"Thanks." I stuttered earnestly, biting my lower lip, before turning on my heels and going to the room, meanwhile almost tripping on my own feet.

~~~
I was greeted by the fresh smell of sheets and the furniture that was just too obviously screaming 'insanely expensive'.
The first thing I did was hastily scanning the room for any sign of the so called ' gift'. I was bestowed with. I did a couple of circles around the petite glass table, just to make sure the present wasn't hiding there. When I made sure I wasn't going crazy I redirected my attention to the other part of the room. There was like an explosion in my brain. In that few minutes of searching I felt like a small child on Christmas day, excitement boosting the flow of blood in my veins, not trying to understand from where these feelings were coming from.
As I leaned my head into the dresser, a quite powerful knock made me jump in place.
"Shit!" I instinctively grabbed the top of my head and massaged it, making soft circles around the hit area. The pain was throbbing, rooted deep inside my skull after it met the hard shelf.
I growled, yelling at the door behind me: "Who is it?"
The answer was a bit ruffled, so for me that meant just one thing. I had to drag myself to the door and open it to the stranger on the others side, which unfortunately wasn't on my 'to do' list.
But I had sighed internally when the annoying sound of knocking didn't stop. My hand gripped the doorknob and turned it, only to open the white marble door.
My face was washed blank with confusion. Every part of my muscles froze on their place until a wide smiled flashed on the other side of the hallway.
"Come on! How long are you going to make me stand outside? These things are soooo heavy!!!!"
It. Was. Bonney.
"Uhmm...Ok?" Not really comprehending the situation, she squeaked in excitement, and slid beside me, allowing herself inside the spacious place. With a loud thump, she released the heavy pink bag that was hanging from one side of her arm and a white large attire cover with a zip, in the other hand to the floor.
"Uhmmm...I'm confused." I honestly said, mentally preparing myself for the explanation that was about to come.
Taking a step closer, I noticed she was a bit...taller than me, a fact that I obviously didn't notice before. She strutted towards me and abruptly took my hands into her' s, her colored nails poking the inner side of my palms. The pinkette sternly looked at me, right in the eye and held that sudden serious expression.
"Y/n." She whispered in a soft undertone.
I had gulped before I slightly nodded, parting my lips.
"I know we have known each other for two hours." I marginally rose my brow.
"Ok, maybe not two hours...but...Who cares! I like you!" She blurted the whole sentence in one breath, acting supremely confident.
I bit my lower lip, knitting my eyebrows closer as I took a deep sigh: "Look Bonney...you seem like a nice girl...but I don't think I like you in that way...I mean..." I hurriedly continued, my voice sounding apologizing. "There's nothing wrong with you however I don't swing that way so..."
"What...." Now was Bonney the one from which the color washed away. I noticed she struggled with her words. Well I thought she did. But it seemed she tried to tame the laugh that was threatening to be released.
"Omg! No, no, no...! You..."she giggled. "I didn't mean it like that, you dummy!"
"Oh..." I uttered.
An earnest laughter fell upon the atmosphere.
"What I meant to say was...I think you are ok." she said, still grinning. "The way you stood up to Bartolomeo was really something, you know? He isn't always a dick like that, but there's time when he can't just shut his big mouth. Believe it or not...he can be a really softy...If he wants to."
That I couldn't believe.
"But I didn't come here to defend him. I came..." she pointed at the things that were nonchalantly lying on the floor. "For a makeover!"
I already opened my mouth in objection, eyeing her with uncomfortable expression.
"No! wait! I'm always...like...always," she shuddered. "...I'm not even exaggerating...surrounded by those gorillas! I don't have so many chances being girly and just having a normal conversation. You know...less businessy and more...chit chatty?"
I'd bite the edge of a smile when I got an idea in my head. "Ok. Let's say we are really doing this. Can I then ask you some questions."
Way to go Y/n... negotiate with a mafia leader...very smooth indeed...
The pinkette pouted a bit, then sighed in surrender: "Fine!"
"Deal." I clamped my hands.
"Finally." She squealed, launching herself to the bag and sitting me down on the white sheets.
"First thing first. Dresses." She rose the white cover and unzipped the carefully placed dress. "I bought this one a week ago. What do you think?"
She handed me the green fabric, which was soft and light on touch.
It was pretty short, but that didn't surprise me. I had the feeling she liked more revealing clothes rather than conservative.
My muscles on my face tightened when my gaze dipped to the décolleté.
Does Kid like more revealing, bold girls?
I inhaled a sharp breath. What am I even thinking? Have I gone crazy?
"Well?" She beamed.
"It's gorgeous." I responded honestly.
Looking pleased with my reaction she span 360°, leaped into action, feet hammering the marbled floor.
"Now show me yours! It's probably really cute!" Bonney gave me a subtle wink. "It's in there, right?" She nudged her head to the corner of the bed, where a large, white box was placed. I almost smacked my palm against my forehead.
That was it!
Without any delay I jumped to the carefully stocked dress. With shaky hands, I slowly opened the box, the smell of new invaded my space.
My smile grew on its own accord and I couldn't hide it in any kind of way. The first thing that caught my eye was of course the color.
Bold red. It was the color of blood, like the vivid red of the freshly spilled.
My hand wandered to my mouth, covering it in shock.
"This is for me?" I murmured, now gripping the fabric between my fingers. Kneeling on the floor I glanced up. "But aren't we just having dinner? Why so extravagant?"
"We are talking about Bege here. When he says 'dinner' it's always some kind of feast with many guests." The pinkette chuckled, not making eye contact but focusing on the dress.
"It's very beautiful..." She tore her gaze from it. "You looked rather surprised when you opened the package. Who bought it for you?"
"Honestly? I don't know..." There is no way Kid would do such a thing. No way. He despises me. But why did then Killer lie? Maybe...he didn't? Was that the truth?
"Probably Killer." I guessed. "Even tho he acts like a jerk, he's...adequate?" I jested.
"Maybe." The tone of her voice lowered, seemed a bit reluctant, distant. But that lasted for only a minute, when she turned to her 'normal self'.
"It's six o' clock. There's no time to waste, Y/n!" She pumped her fist in air. "Let's begin with the procedure."
~~~

"You should just let your heir down. It's more alluring when natural." Bonney hummed, while applying some additional shadow on her upper lid.

"If you say so." I agreed. Ok, Y/n... It' s time! Just as her!

I coughed before I shakingly started the conversation. "Can I as you something?"

"Oh, yeah I forgot about our deal. Sure. Why not?"

"This will sound a bit suspicious, but I really want to get a better point of view. I've been residing in Kid's mansion for two weeks now. And I still don't understand him...you know...like...who he is...So I was taken aback when I found out you two share a past. So, here it goes...How do you know Kid?" Then I realized it would sound a bit suspicious if I only asked for the redhead, so I corrected myself. "And Killer, of course!"

"Hmmm...We've known each other since we were like eight? Nine perhaps? Those two idiots are like brothers to me." Bonney smiled mildly at the memory.

My heart skipped a beat. Like brothers. So not lovers.

"Wow? Really? So, was Kid always so stuck up? Is that his normal trait?" I struggled not to lean even closer to her and showing her my excitement. My lips forcibly pressed together into a cautious line.

"Being an asshole, you mean? Yep." The pinkette grumbled.

"Always was always will be. But unfortunately, ..." she sighed. "I can't help myself from being happy when I see him. He was always problematic. Even during middle and high school." She put down the eye liner and turned to observe me.

"What I'm going to say must stay between us two. You surely noticed how Kid's personality is far from perfect. He is arrogant, aggressive, aloof, cruel, deceitful...Not that it's not obvious enough. However, he wasn't always like that, ya know? There was a short period of time where...that's going to sound cheesy, but he was... warm. Pleasant. Not like every average person, but close to it. That' s what I thought." She abruptly looked away, deliberating.

"I'm not saying he's uncapable of compassion, it' s just that he lacks certain emotions. But frankly, I don't know why."

That moment I realized I had misinterpreted his actions. When her words stopped, my mind finally concluded.

"I didn't know." I finally uttered.

He is dangerous. She is trying to open my eyes. Kid . Is. Dangerous.

My pulse quickened as I intuitively realized the truth. Before I was put before a fact. But know, the evidence was right before my eyes. I could comprehend the truth.

He is dangerous.

But he has his limits.

The real question now is---

Who are you, Eustass Kid?
