"So you're a shape shifter?" Tyler asked, swallowing the food he had in his mouth.
Onity sat next to the table of food on a stool, facing Tyler. "That's not solely what I am, but it is what I am best at in terms of types of magic. I get to use it more often then other magics."
"Other magics?" Tyler asked, leaning partly against the table.
"I mean, there are all kinds of magics and levels of magic and what not. I'm pretty good at shape shifting, but I also can do battle magic pretty well. Location and teleportation magic." Onity said.
"Battle magic?" Tyler shifted, finding that to be pretty interesting. He imagined Onity using magic in the middle of battle, kind of like those PvP fighting games he likes to play, and thought that was pretty cool.
"I mean, I almost never get to use any of it, Seto would never let me." Onity paused. "Well, I've never gotten to use any of it at all, buuttt I still got that in me."
Tyler frowned. "How do you know?"
"Battle magic was more important at home, with a war going on and what not. I also have another oni form that's more like a monster and it's really cool as far as I remember, but I don't get to use that much anymore." Onity answered. "When I was really little, Seto would let me run around like a little hairless dog and it was adorable, but the form gets bigger as you grow up and I just kinda learned not to use it at all."
Tyler grinned. "A little hairless dog?"
"That's what it looked like, though trust me as a 12 year old it was pretty cute. I don't imagine it being a cute form now, but who knows." Onity shrugged.
Tyler took a sip from the glass of soda and ice in his hands. "You should show me."
Onity hummed. "Hmm, Maybe. I don't want to leave the party just yet though."
"Yeah, I'm not ready to give up my soda yet." Tyler nodded his head.
There was a bit of silence. Tyler turned to his drink, and then looked out around the room. His sister was goofing off with the girl that Onity was staying with, whom Tyler had learned was named Vanessa. Vanessa's brother was with his mom, who was chatting with some other people Tyler didn't know. Seto and Brice were over at one of the tables, Seto's Aunt talking to them. She had a drink in hand, and Tyler realized that a considerable amount of the adults in the room had some sort of alcoholic drink. His dad did not, and the woman who drove Onity here did not, as well as Brice and Seto, whom were probably waiting for their honeymoon to drink anything.
"Hey, you want to dance?"
Tyler looked over at Onity and then laughed. "I'm sorry?"
Onity pushed himself off the stool he sat on and motioned out to the open floor, and Tyler realized that there was music playing, and quite a few people dancing. None of it was really good, but they were having fun none the less. Tyler recognized the music to be something a little up beat, like some of The Beatles or whatever. He's sure he's heard this song before, but couldn't put a name to it.
"You wanna dance?" Onity asked again. "Looks fun."
"I don't dance." Tyler shook his head, giving Onity that "I'm sorry, but" look.
"I say you can~"
"Not a chance."
"No?"
Tyler shook his head again. "I know we've just met and all, but I was hoping you'd notice I'm a really introverted person."
Onity hummed. "Would a really introverted person ask out a boy he's just met?"
"Hey! I-"
"No, no, I got it." Onity sighed. "But, I'm sure if you just tried, you'd look great!"
Tyler took a sip from his drink and then placed it back down on the table. "I'd look like an idiot."
"Okay, but, look." Onity walked to stand beside Tyler, and then motioned out to the others already dancing. "Do they look like they knew what they're doing?"
"Not...not really?" Tyler shrugged.
"EXACTLY!" Onity smiled, moving swiftly to stand in front of Tyler again, this time with his hand out. "Dance with me?"
Tyler still couldn't muster up the ability to join Onity. He just really wasn't that person. Sure, he knew he would probably have fun, but he didn't like thinking about how much of an idiot he probably would look. Onity sighed and didn't allow Tyler to reply at all after the silence.
"Alright, well, I won't force you." Onity looked away.
"Onit-" Tyler started, worried be might have hurt Onity's feelings. Sure this kid understood what being an introvert was like, even a little.
"But!" Onity turned back, grinning.
"What?" Tyler asked, not sure how to register that face.
Onity did a little twirl, to add effect of course, and was suddenly transformed into a new body. Tyler couldn't believe it. Onity now looked like Tyler, with the bright red shirt tucked into the lovely black pants and now somewhat unkept brown hair and those glasses. Tyler was almost impressed, as the only difference between the two was that Onity had an amber right eye and a still neon purple left eye.
"What are you doing?" Tyler followed as Onity began to walk towards the area were some of the others were dancing. "Onity. Onity!"
"You think you'll look like an idiot and I get that, but let me prove something to you." Onity said, stopping when he got to the middle of the dancing area.
"Prove what?!" Tyler asked. " That you can look like an idiot too?"
Onity shrugged.
"What was that shrug about?" Tyler asked, growing more nervous and embarrassed at the same time. The room was full of strangers, tons of people he didn't know, and quite a few were looking over, probably finding it odd that there were two of him. "Onity!"
To the side of the dancing area, there were a few tables near the wall. Over at the tables, Seto and Brice as with Seto's Aunt. The woman was having fun chatting with her nephew whom she didn't get to talk a lot with. Their conversations had slowed down and she sat, looking around the room. With her drink almost empty, and not quite losing her mind yet, she hoped to talk to her great nephew as well, but she couldn't spot him out from the crowd.
"Hmm, where did that boy get off to?" She said aloud. "I don't see Unity."
"My guess is he's probably one of the two in the red shirt?" Seto shrugged, pointing in the direction where Onity had managed to pull Tyler into some sort of dance, Tyler staying still through most of it while he himself did something that looked a little 1950s.
"He's the one actually dancing. I've met Tyler a few times visiting his father and he has never been the kind to dance like that." Brice said, sitting almost side by side with his husband, though in his own chair of course. Seto drank from his glass of water, however Brice had helped himself to a cold glass of cherry soda.
"Oh, well then I guess I won't bug him just yet." Seto's Aunt chuckled. "He seems to be having fun with his friends."
"You mean bOYFRIEND!"
The three nearly jumped and turned to see the daughter, whose name was Vanessa. She had an almost devilish grin on her face as she said that, and it was a miracle that her voice didn't echo around the room, being muffled by the music. She'd nearly slammed into the table, the Aunt's drink almost slipping.
"W-What?" Seto asked, a surprised look shared between the three adults.
"They're boyfriends, I'm pretty sure of it!" Vanessa smiled, sitting down at the table.
"Pretty sure of it?" Brice repeated.
Vanessa nodded her head. "I mean, I caught them making out while everyone else was outside and I mean if that doesn't scream out boyfriends then I don't know what does. Though, don't tell Tyler I told you because Tyler said he'd kill me if I said anything and I don't think Onity would like his new found boyfriend to end up in juvenile. Oh, and I don't want to die by a nerdo."
"Oohh, okay." Brice nodded his head, looking back over to Tyler and Onity to find Onity had changed back into his human form.
"That's-That's surprising." Seto said, still processing this information.
"Ah, your boy is growing up so fast! Remember when he was small and had a cute chubby face and had no concept of sarcasm or sass yet?"
Seto laughed. "Oh, he had his salty moments, trust me. No, I'm just surprised as in I've never heard of this kid yet, other then from you Brice. I didn't know they knew each other."
"Neither did I." Brice replied.
"I don't think they did." Vanessa added. "I mean, I wasn't paying full attention, but there were multiple instants where Onity walked right past him and didn't even notice his existence. Until like sometime before the actually wedding when they disappeared inside the building."
Seto leaned into the table, using his arms to support him. "So they just met?"
"I guess so." Seto's Aunt smiled. "I don't typically find love at first sight believable, but I do trust your son."
They looked back over to find that Onity and Tyler had stopped, the two off to the side talking, Tyler's face red from what was probably still embarrassment. Onity had his arms out, moving as he talked, and then Tyler made a frustrated face before beginning to laugh. He said something in reply and gave Onity a playful light punch on the shoulder.
"I guess I can trust him too." Seto replied.
"Oh, come on now, he's a smart kid! He might act dumb sometimes but you know all too well it's just an act." His aunt replied.
Seto rolled his eyes, though still smiling. "He'll always be my Unity."
Vanessa leaned back in her chair. "Okay but are we all sure it's just an act? Because I've been staying with him for the last two days and I don't think so."
"Oh, quite little miss." Seto poked at her.
"Speaking of the devils..." Vanessa crossed her arms and looked away momentarily as the three adults realized she was talking about the fact that Onity and Tyler were now walking over to their table.
"Unity! We were just talking about you!" The Aunt smiled, Onity smiling back at her. "Who is your friend?"
The two stood in front of the table, "Oh, this is Tyler. Tyler Crisson." He answered.
"Hi." Tyler said.
"You two having fun?" Brice asked.
Onity rolled his eyes. "Of course not." He replied sarcastically.
"Good, wouldn't have it any other way." Seto said.
Onity pulled aside a chair and sat down, looking over to see if Tyler would do the same. Tyler blinked before realizing this and shook his head.
"Hold on, I'm gonna go get my soda. Left it at the table over there." He said and then walked off.
Onity nodded and leaned back in his chair, looking back at the others at the table only to be greeted by silence. Something was up.
"Is there something I'm not getting here?" Onity asked.
Vanessa laughed. "Don't tell Tyler but I spilled the beans."
Onity laughed at the statement. "All that I asked was that you respect his privacy but what you brought upon yourself is your dealing, Van."
"Then my last wish is that you stop calling me Van. I'm not some shoe brand, dummy." Vanessa replied.
"Did you plan on telling us yourself anytime before we headed off?" Seto asked his son, curious to his answer as he didn't even introduce Tyler as a boyfriend.
"Uhhh maybe? I mean we only just met after like what? Years?" Onity shrugged.
"You've met Tyler before?" Brice asked.
Onity nodded his head. "He's the kid who gave me the mask when I was twelve!" He looked at Seto. "You remember, right? We went to the market that day."
Seto's eyes softened. "It was the day you met Brice."
"So You met Tyler the same day you were introduced to Brice? And now you've magically run into Tyler again and managed to become his boyfriend the same day your parents get married? Gosh, your timing is weird." Vanessa said.
"I think it's cute!" Seto's Aunt replied.
"Yes, yes, Anyway!" Onity stretched his arms. "Do you really have to leave me with Van for another four days?"
"It won't be four days, no matter how lovely that sounds." Seto corrected, leaning against Brice's shoulder. "We'll be gone for two days, return sometime late at night, and see you again the next morning! You know this isn't about leaving you."
"I know, It just gets boring having to share a room with her."
"Hey! You could always go sleep with my brother!" Vanessa frowned.
"I'm horrified at the thought of that." Onity replied. "Any of that, actually."
"You guys need to stop hating each other so much." Vanessa said.
"He finds me disgusting! Won't tell me why! I have nothing to say to him." Onity said defensively.
"Who finds you disgusting?" Tyler asked with his drink in hand, finding his seat next to Onity.
"Van's brother." Onity answered.
"Quite calling me van!" Vanessa hissed.
"Oh, Van can't hold a can of beans straight to save her life by the way." Onity told Tyler and Brice and the Aunt laughed.
"What? I don't ge- OH She spilled the beans. Hah," Tyler said, then shot a glare at Vanessa. "Funny."
Vanessa stepped up from her chair and hide behind Brice, whom sat closest to her.
"Don't let him near me!" She whispered to Brice.
"Hmm, I'll try my best, but I'm not moving from this chair so your best bet is running." Brice replied.
Vanessa took that as a chance to escape the table and find someone else to bother. Their chatter continued, and Onity officially introduced Tyler to his dad and great aunt. They talked for awhile, Onity happy to spend more time with his parents before he'd miss them again for a few more days. The wedding continued, and eventually things began to wind down. With the wedding, cake, dance, etc out of the way, people began to say their goodbyes. Eventually, Brice and Seto had to leave as well if they planned to be on time for any of their plans. Of course, they remembered to say goodbye to their son before they headed off.
"My phone will be turned off for awhile, but you'll be fine, right?" Seto asked, pulling away from hugging his son.
"I know how to take care of myself. And If I do need help with anything, I've got other adults I can turn to." Onity reminded his dad.
"I know." Seto smiled, stepping back and reaching to hold Brice's hand, who stood with him.
"Don't forget to come back for me, okay?" Onity joked.
"What was that?" Brice pretended he didn't hear. "Run away and never return? Got it!"
"Like I said, we'll be back in a few days. You be good for Van." Seto said.
"I won't promise anything." Onity nodded his head.
It was just a few more minutes and then the couple were gone. Onity found that by that time, it was him, Van's family, Tyler and his family, and Seto's Aunt still there. Onity knew that Vanessa's mother and Seto's Aunt planned to clean everything up, not that there was really a whole lot to clean. Onity, Vanessa, and her brother of course had to help. Before Onity began to help, though, he wanted to spend a little more time with Tyler before he had to leave.
"I managed to get my dad to agree to spending a few more minutes. He's talking with one of the other ladies, helping them out for a little." Tyler said, walking over from the building. The two were now back outside, only this time around the side of the building, where a small run down bird bath and a few benches were.
"Good." Onity smiled.
Tyler then pulled a small piece of paper out of his pocket. "It's my number, by the way. I wrote it down before walking out here. It might be useful to you."
Onity took it and placed it into his own pocket. "Very useful."
The two walked over to one of the benches and sat down.
"So, I've got two days to waste away at a boring household. I can't drive yet but I know Vanessa's mom would be willing to help me out if you want to hang out later." Onity said.
"Sure. I planned to plan Pokemon pretty much my whole summer so I don't have much else important going on." Tyler replied.
"I'll text you later then to make plans." Onity nodded his head. There was a few seconds of peaceful silence shared between the two.
"You know, that mask you gave me, I still have it in my room. It's hanging on the wall above the door when you walk in." Onity said.
"Honestly, I don't even remember what It looked like. I don't remember that day very well." Tyler said.
"It was a red day of the dead looking mask." Onity said.
"Ah. I was obsessed with those as a little kid." Tyler remembered.
"Well I still have it. Just saying. It's cool." Onity said, not sure what to say next.
Tyler sighed and leaned against Onity's shoulder, which took Onity by surprise. He relaxed and couldn't help but smile. The last couple of hours had gone by so fast. Here, sitting next to him, leaning on him, was a kid he'd only seen for a few seconds years ago, that he had remembered, and met again. Tyler, as he found out after becoming his boyfriend, wasn't just attractive but was funny and the kind of personality that Onity liked. He did trust his blind faith in him, and it worked out. Well, Tyler looked like the nerd type and Onity had previous knowledge that his type was the nerd type, so it wasn't completely blind.
On the other hand, Tyler didn't have a type, and never really thought much about his own love life yet. He couldn't describe why he decided to suddenly ask Onity out, and thinking back on it it was a pretty desperate looking move, but he didn't quite regret it yet. Onity was funny and respected his introverted bubble and was on top of that pretty mysterious. He'd met this kid years ago and it was amazing to think he'd run into him today. He wasn't even human, and Tyler never really gave thought to what species his future love would be, despite being in a world with more then just humans.
"Hey Tyler?"
"Hm?"
"Can I kiss you again?"
Tyler moved off Onity's side and faced him, their eyes meeting. He sighed. "Sure."
They leaned in, eyes closed, and their lips met again for the second time. It was still a sweet, innocent kiss, but it lasted longer then the first that they shared earlier. This one had a little bit more feeling to it, a bit more love. Tyler's hand reached up slightly to hold onto Onity's arm as he leaned it just a bit more. And then, after a few more seconds of bliss, they pulled apart.
The afternoon sky would slowly grow into a sunset and the two would return inside to help finish cleaning up, and then Tyler would have to leave with his family. They would say goodbye, and Vanessa would tease them, and Seto's Aunt would poke fun at them as well. And then Onity would have to say goodbye to his great aunt, and then she would be gone, and then he and Vanessa and her brother and mother would be the last ones at the old church.
