My hand shook as I struck the match against the damp tinder box, praying to god that the match would light. The darkness around me was cold and thick, pressing against me and making it hard to breathe. My prayers were answered when my ears heard the familiar ffft and watched as the top of the small stick exploded in a bright orange light. I breathed a sigh of relief as I quickly placed a burning match above the burnt wick, the dying candle springing to life and somewhat illuminating the lightless hallway.

I sighed again. Nothing had changed. The several visible doors in the hallway were all still shut tight, the brass doorknobs glowing in the candle light. The grimy silver mirror still hung on the wall beside me, a spider web of cracks still slashed through it, reflecting back the distorted image of my trembling figure.

I felt pain strike my hand like a fiery whip and I yelped, my hand jerking in reflex, causing the still burning match to fall to the worn wooden floor, the fire finally consuming the remaining wood of the match and crumbling to ash.

I could hear a loud bang resounded from behind me and I yelped, turning and brandishing the candle in front of me as if the tiny flame would protect me. The white wax sliding down the candle and into the small metal candle holder with a plick... plick... plick...

I shivered, this place was playing tricks on me, sending me to the brink of insanity.
A loud ear piercing creak tears my eyes away from the hallway behind me. My eyes widened to see that the closest door to my right was swinging wide open on its rusty hinges, revealing the void of darkness that would be considered a room, beckoning me to enter.

I sighed. I had nowhere else to go. I had nothing but a damp box of matches, the torn clothes on my back and a single candle to guide me through this dreaded nightmare called a mansion.
