Chapter 3: Return of the Forgotten
Last time, Conrad did battle with two of his sisters and revealed the power of his Devil Fruit. He was able to scrape out a victory only for Elder Nyon to reveal his identity to the Kuja Tribe. More importantly, to his sisters.
Conrad honestly wished the reveal of his identity had gone better. With Gloriosa practically shouting his name to the Kuja Tribe, he was caught in a rather compromising situation. Now he stood in front of the Palace, his sisters home with an already exhausted look on his face.
"You just had to say my name out loud, didn't you granny?" Conrad said in an unamused tone as he gave Gloriosa a sideways glance. Gloriosa gently whacked him on top of the head before turning to give him a look of her own. "Maybe if someone didn't prolong a pointless fight with his sisters, I wouldn't have needed to step in!" Gloriosa scolded as Conrad rubbed the sore spot on his head.
Conrad let out a frustrated sigh before pulling a carrot out of his jacket and ripping the frond off. Conrad then placed the carrot in his mouth as he started to chew on it. "I just wanted to see how I stacked up to my sisters. After all, I wasn't much of a fighter five years ago." Conrad said as he scratched the back of his head in slight embarrassment. Gloriosa let a small smile spread across her face as she looked at Conrad. "You certainly have changed over these five years Conrad." Gloriosa said with a hint of pride present in her voice as Conrad blushed in embarrassment from being complimented.
Conrad and Gloriosa entered the palace as they made their way towards Hancock's room. When the duo entered, they found Sandersonia and Marigold already waiting for them. Conrad sat down in between his two sister as he still just chewed on the carrot in silence. Conrad intended to simply accept his fate of getting bombarded with questions as to where he has been. Conrad felt a gentle hand rest on top of his head as he turned to look at his big sister, Sandersonia. "Your in hot water, but I'm happy your back Conny." Sandersonia said as a gentle smile spread across her face, which surprised Conrad.
Conrad didn't think anyone in particular on Amazon Lily would miss him after his disappearance. "I suppose shunning someone and wanting them to disappear are two very different things." Conrad thought to himself as he let his sister pet the top of his head. Conrad munched on his carrot until he caught Marigold staring at him. "Is something wrong sister?" Conrad asked casually as Marigold flinched at her little brother catching her staring. "It's just, why the carrots?" Marigold asked honestly as she saw no point in lying to her brother.
Conrad chuckled at the question before removing the half eaten carrot from his mouth. "This? I suppose it's a side effect of my Devil Fruit. I don't remember being all that fond of them before I consumed it." Conrad said rather absentmindedly before he gently placed the carrot back in his mouth. The curtain obscuring Hancock's bed opened to reveal the eldest Boa Sibling, sitting on her giant snake, Salome. From the look he was receiving, Conrad could tell he was in for a bit of a verbal thrashing. "So, to start, what compelled you to abandon your home for five years." Hancock said asked in a dangerously calm tone as Conrad felt a chill run up his spine, yup this was going to suck.
"Well, I guess I was just tired. I knew you and the rest of the tribe didn't want me around. So I guess I just decided to leave, make something of myself." Conrad said honestly as he noticed his eldest sister's stern expression falter for a moment after he said that. Conrad felt him getting picked up as Sandersonia gently sat him in her lap. "Conny, I know we were a bit cold to you, but we didn't want you gone." Sandersonia said honestly as her grip slightly tightened on her little brother. Conrad knew Sonia was probably the one who felt most guilty, considering her reaction back in the arena when his identity was revealed to everyone by Gloriosa.
Hancock cleared her throat as she wanted her brother's full attention again. "I suppose I can understand your actions. Now the next issue, how did you end up eating a Devil Fruit?" Hancock asked as she hoped he wasn't force fed it like her and their sisters. An embarrassed blush spread across Conrad's face as he scratched the back of his head nervously. "Funny story about that, it was mixed in with a bag of strawberries I brought with me. I didn't notice it looked completely different from a strawberry." Conrad said with an embarrassed chuckle as he still couldn't believe he didn't catch something like that.
Sandersonia let a small giggle escape her lips at her little brother's oversight. "When did you get so proficient at Haki?" Marigold asked as she remembered her brother only had the basics of Haki understood before his abrupt departure. "It was apart of my Marine training, when Vice Admiral Tsuru found out I had both Observation and Armament Haki, she had me train under Vice Admiral Garp for a few weeks. That was mostly for Armament, Tsuru helped me really push my Observation Haki." Conrad explained as he remembered how many times he got wackier with a wooden sword while blindfolded.
While Hancock was proud of her brother for improving himself so much in just five years, there was one thing that was still one thing bothering all three of the Gorgon Sisters. "Why did you join the Marines?" Hancock asked as Conrad felt the calm nature in the room be replaced with a rather intense one all of a sudden. "Well, I wanted to help people. After getting picked up by Vice Admiral Tsuru I thought it was the best course of action." Conrad admitted as he honestly didn't understand the deadly feeling that filled the entire room.
Hancock grit her teeth as Marigold and Sandersonia both seemed to tense up as well. "Is there something wrong?" Conrad asked as he could tell there was some context or information he was sorely lacking. "What's wrong is our brother is working for the World Government! You honestly support those monsters with a clear conscious?!" Hancock shouted as Conrad was slightly taken aback by his eldest sibling's outburst. "I never said I liked the World Government, I just work for the Marines to help innocent people. What's your issue with the World Government?" Conrad asked as he was genuinely confused by his sisters sudden outburst and grim attitude that took over the room.
"Hancock, you can't expect him to know when we never told him." Sandersonia said gently as Hancock calmed down slightly before looking at her still very confused little brother. "Conrad, promise you won't view us differently after what I'm about to show you." Hancock said in an almost scared tone before she turned around so her back was facing him and his other sisters. Hancock began taking her top off as Conrad looked away as an embarrassed blush spread across his face. "We're siblings Conrad, there's nothing wrong with you seeing us like that." Sandersonia whispered teasingly as Conrad only blushed more at his sister's teasing words.
"Siblings or not, all of you are still grown women!" Conrad snapped back which only caused Sandersonia to giggle even more. Hancock cleared her throat as everyone turned to look at her. Hancock pushed aside her curtain of black hair as Conrad saw a mark on her back that caused his eyes to widen as he immediately shot up to his feet. On his sister's back was a red dragon's claw tattoo that could only mean one thing, the Celestial Dragons.
Conrad slowly walked up to Hancock as he felt his hands start to shake in rage. "I-I know that your probably disgusted. W-We ignored you yet we were slaves for them. The lowest of scum." Hancock said in a broken tone as she could tell her brother was right behind her. Conrad looked over his shoulder at Marigold and Sandersonia, who also looked down in shame and pain.
Hancock felt a gentle hand rest on top of her head as tears started to run down her face. "Like I said, I don't agree with the World Government or the Celestial Dragons. Don't think that mark makes you any less of a person big sister." Conrad said gently as all three of his sisters started to cry. Conrad gently hugged Hancock as he shushed his eldest sister as best as he could. Eventually things calmed down enough that Conrad felt comfortable speaking again. "We can continue talking later, I'll give you three some privacy." Conrad said as he slowly walked out of the palace so his sisters could sort out their emotions.
Kuja Tribe
Conrad walked through the town of the Kuja Tribe as all eyes were focused on him. Conrad noticed however that instead of the usual looks of disgust that he got five years ago, they were replaced by looks of curiosity. "I suppose after my performance in the arena, their curious as to what I can do." Conrad thought as he simply continued on his way through the tribe. Conrad pulled out another carrot from his jacket before ripping the frond off it and popping it in his mouth. Conrad was content with simply enjoying his walk in silence, until he felt something or rather someone bumping into his leg stopping him.
Conrad looked down to see a young girl who appeared to be around five or six years old. "Sorry about that kiddo." Conrad said gently as he was about walk past the girl when she grabbed the back end of his jacket. "Something wrong?" Conrad asked as he gave the little girl a curious look. The little girl pointed to the roof of one of the buildings only to see a ball stuck on top of it. "Well that is a problem now isn't it? Luckily, I think I have a solution." Conrad said as he took his cap off his head before gently placing it on the girl's head, which confused her.
"Mind holding that for me while I get your ball back?" Conrad said as he gave the little girl a gentle smile as she simply nodded at him. Conrad activated his Devil Fruit as he turned into his hybrid form. Conrad crouched down before in one fluid jump, gracefully propelled himself onto the roof of the building. Conrad grabbed the ball before jumping down from the roof and crouching and offering the ball to the little girl. The little girl hesitated for a moment before slowly reaching her hands out and plucking the ball from Conrad's hands. The little girl then looked at Conrad with wonder present in her eyes.
"Is there something on my face?" Conrad asked in a teasing tone before the little girl gently placed a hand on his face to feet his fur. Conrad chuckled before drooping his ears down to tickle the sides of the little girl's face, causing her to giggle. The little girl then took Conrad's cap off her head before gently placing back on his head before running off to play with her friends again. Conrad stood back up to see that everyone had stopped what they were doing to watch him interact with the little girl. Conrad reverted back to his human form as an embarrassed blush spread across his face at that realization.
"P-Pardon me." Conrad managed to blurt out before continuing on his way. "Well that's embarrassing. Oh well, at least it made that little girl happy." Conrad thought to himself as he decided to head into the jungle to get away from all the eyes on him for a little bit. "Maybe I should find a nice tree to take a nap in." Conrad mumbled to himself as he entered the jungle around the Kuja Tribe for some peace and quiet. Little did the Lieutenant Commander realize he was being followed by three figures into the jungle. The trio kept their distance in order to avoid being spotted by Conrad.
In the Jungle
Conrad was laying on a large branch of a tree as he propped himself up against the trunk of the tree. "It was really sweet of you to do that for that little girl." Conrad cracked an eye open to see a girl that stood at a similar height to Sandersonia and Marigold. She had a large sword strapped to the back of her waist and a timid smile plastered across her face.
"As Marine, it's my job to ensure the safety and happiness of the people. Well at least that's my brand of justice, so really it was nothing." Conrad said as he sat up on the tree branch and looked at the girl. The girl let out a short giggle before bowing to Conrad. "Aphelandra, at your service Boa Conrad." Aphelandra said in a respectful tone as she continued to bow to Conrad in respect.
Conrad felt himself get embarrassed again, he always hated it when people treated him as a superior, ironic given his line of work. "There's no need to be all formal, just Conrad is fine." Conrad said as he tried to wave off the formalities he was receiving. "Your one of the Empress's siblings, you deserve this level of respect from your people." Another voice chimed in as he turned to look at a girl with short brown hair done up in two ponytails. She had a snake as a staff in her one hand.
Conrad wanted to groan at that statement, but he knew how the hierarchy of his home island worked.
"I'm not sure a man who abandoned his home for five years is worthy of such respect miss." Conrad said as he thought he made a valid argument. "Sweet Pea, you had your reasons Boa Conrad. You certainly impressed everyone with your performance in the arena earlier today." Sweet Pea said as Conrad felt his face heat up in embarrassment once again at the praise. Conrad honestly wasn't expecting this kind of treatment when he returned home. He thought it would be mostly the same, the occasional dirty look, but being ignored for the most part. Somehow this was more uncomfortable for him then being ignored, he wasn't used to praise.
"I'm surprised you ended up getting cursed like the Gorgon Sisters." The trio turned to see a girl with short blonde hair that appeared to be sixteen years old. She hand a snake coiled around her torso as she gave Conrad a curious look.
"Ironic isn't it? My curse wasn't as fantastical I'm afraid. I upset a forest spirit on another island when I killed a rabbit for food." Conrad lied as he now knew the curse story was a lie to hide an incredibly ugly truth from the tribe. Conrad jumped down from the tree before stretching. "So, what can I do for you ladies?" Conrad asked as he was now curious as to why the tracked him down out here in the jungle of all places.
"Marguerite is my name. I was curious about you, I thought the stories of the Gorgon Sisters having a younger brother were just rumors." Marguerite admitted as Conrad couldn't blame her for not knowing about him. He didn't get to play with the other children on Amazon Lily when he was younger, so he's not surprised if some of them thought he was some kind of myth. "I assure you that I'm very real, of course I'm not the same man I was five years ago." Conrad said as he pulled a carrot from his jacket before ripping the frond off and popping it in his mouth.
Marguerite walked up to Conrad before looking him over over from every angle which made Conrad uncomfortable slightly. Marguerite then stopped in front of him before grabbing his pants in an attempt to pull them down. Conrad quickly grabbed her wrist, stopping the action completely. "What the hell are you doing?!" Conrad shouted in a mixture of anger and embarrassment at Marguerite's actions. "What, I've seen the differences when Luffy landed on the island a few days ago. I was just curious." Marguerite said as this was completely acceptable.
Conrad was surprised when he heard the name of the Straw Hat Pirate Captain, but decided it could wait for the moment. "That's not the point! Your not an adult! I could get in serious trouble for something like this! Wait at least two years before pulling a stunt like this on me!" Conrad grumbled as he did not find this behavior amusing in the slightest. "I'm a warrior, I fail to see how I'm not an adult, so what is the problem?" Marguerite asked as she didn't see things the same way as Conrad in the slightest. Conrad wanted to slam his face into the ground at that moment.
Conrad completely forgot just how isolated from the world the Kuja Tribe was. "Sometimes I really hate how sheltered my people are." Conrad thought to himself before he detached Marguerite's hand from his pants. "Forget it, just know that what you were about to do was not okay!" Conrad stated firmly as he hoped the point would get across. "You said it would be okay in two years correct?" Marguerite said as Conrad simply groaned before starting to walk back to the tribe with the three women in tow. Conrad didn't know why, but he felt that Marguerite was going to continue to drive him up the wall.
So Conrad met with his sisters and explained some of the things he had been doing over the past five years! Secrets were revealed and emotions certainly flew. Conrad also seems to have caught the attention of the rest of the Kuja Tribe, one blonde in particular. I recently started a story on Gash Bell, also known as Zatch Bell.
